Technology, Multimodality and Learning Analyzing Meaning across Scales【電子書籍】[ Germ?n Canale ]

This book introduces multimodality and technology as key concepts for understanding learning in the 21st century. The author investigates how a nationwide socio-educational policy in Uruguay becomes recontextualised across time/space scales, impacting interaction and learning in an English as a Foreign Language classroom. The book introduces scalar analysis to better understand the situated and fractal nature of education policy as meaning-making, subsequently defining learning from a multimodal socio-semiotic approach. The analytical integration of different policy scales shows what policy means to various stakeholders, and what learning means for students and teachers. This depends both on how they position themselves and how they engage with the policy educational media. This innovative book will appeal to students and scholars of technology and learning, as well as multimodality.

Evolution in Genre Emergence, Variation, Multimodality【電子書籍】[ Maurizio Gotti ]

The notion of ‘genre’ has established itself as a key concept in many disciplines and fields as a means of describing social action and/or recurring patterns of form. Recent social and technological changes are driving the emergence of new genres, the evolution of traditional ones as well as variation within them. In this volume a range of approaches addressing the evolution of genre are presented. Many draw on corpus analysis of the lexicogrammatical features employed in the communicative artefacts addressed; several extend traditional corpus analysis to include non-linguistic or extra-linguistic features involved in multimodal communication. Connections with social theories are discussed, as is the notion of families or groups of genres co-existing within broader constellations. Genres are examined in detail for their linguistic and non-linguistic realisations and forms of expression across related genres and within the ‘same’ genre when subjected to differing social or medial constraints or possibilities. In all cases, we see how genre continues to function as an effective tool for following communication as it, its contexts of use, and its social functions evolve.

Working with Multimodality Rethinking Literacy in a Digital Age【電子書籍】[ Jennifer Rowsell ]

In today’s digital world, we have multiple modes of meaning-making: sounds, images, hypertexts. Yet, within literacy education, even ‘new’ literacies, we know relatively little about how to work with and produce modally complex texts.

In Working with Multimodality, Jennifer Rowsell focuses on eight modes: words, images, sounds, movement, animation, hypertext, design and modal learning. Throughout the book each mode is illustrated by cases studies based on the author’s interviews with thirty people, who have extensive experience working with a mode in their field. From a song writer to a well known ballet dancer, these people all discuss what it means to do multimodality well.

This accessible textbook brings the multiple modes together into an integrated theory of multimodality. Step-by-step, beginning with theory then exploring modes and how to work with them, before concluding with how to apply this in an investigation, each stage of working with multimodality is covered.

Working with Multimodality will help students and scholars to:
? Think about specific modes and how they function
? Consider the implications for multimodal meaning-making
? Become familiar with conventions and folk knowledge about given modes
? Apply this same knowledge to their own production of media texts in classrooms

Assuming no prior knowledge about multimodality and its properties, Working with Multimodality is designed to appeal to advanced undergraduate and postgraduate students interested in how learning and innovation is different in a digital and media age and is an essential textbook for courses in literacy, new media and multimodality within applied linguistics , education and communication studies.

New Studies in Multimodality Conceptual and Methodological Elaborations【

Multimodality is one of the most popular and influential semiotic theories for analysing media. However, the application and conceptual anchoring of multimodality often remains geographically and disciplinarily grounded within local systems of thought. New Studies in Multimodality combines the expertise of multimodalists from around the globe, offering novel readings and applications of central concepts in multimodality and inviting innovative synergies between previously disparate schools.

Combining perspectives from the most actively developing traditions of theory and research, this book progresses from classic concepts to more empirically and practice-motivated contributions. Contributors engage in mutual dialogue to present new theoretical perspectives and compelling applications to a variety of old and new media. Expanding the basis and scope of multimodality, this volume shows awareness and experience of this field in many disciplines and illustrates how versatile, pervasive and relevant it is for studying today's communication phenomena.

Multimodality, Meaning, and Institutions【

The insight that institutions, and the communicative practices that create, sustain, and challenge them, are multimodal accomplishments has garnered increasing attention from scholars in organization and management research over the last decade. Traditional understanding of social knowledge and meaning as being constituted primarily through verbal discourse has been challenged and extended by work that has promoted the centrality of visual, material, and other sign systems (e.g., audio, gestures, layout) for constructing social reality.

While some discursive approaches to organizations and institutions have acknowledged the existence and relevance of modes other than the verbal for some time, systematic research on multimodality has remained rather sparse. In particular, the interaction and orchestration of multiple modes remains terra incognita with considerable empirical, methodological, and theoretical stakes.

Together, 54A and 54B of Research in the Sociology of Organizations investigate these issues with innovative research that focuses on the relationship between different modes in the emergence, diffusion, maintenance, and challenge of social meanings and institutions. Individual contributions demonstrate the potential of multimodal approaches to rejuvenate and extend the study of institutions, they revisit research on classic phenomena in organization theory through a multimodal lens, and advance the design of relevant and rigorous methods of analysis for the study of multimodal communicative practices.

Moving Ideas Multimodality and Embodied Learning in Communities and Schools【電子書籍】[ Michele Knobel ]

What does it look and feel like to communicate, create, compose, comprehend, teach, and learn with our bodies? Reaching beyond existing scholarship on multimodality and literacies, Moving Ideas expands our capacity to understand the embodied dimensions of learning and stretches our repertoires for more artfully describing them. Wresting language away from its historically privileged place at the center of social science research and practice, this collection examines the strategic layering across semiotic modes, challenging educators and researchers to revisit many of our most elemental assumptions about communication, learning, and development. The corporeal pedagogies these authors describe illuminate a powerful kind of learning that we know far too little about; in this age of accountability and high-stakes testing, failing to pay adequate attention to the promise of multimodality means forfeiting significant resources that could be used to innovatively engage people of all ages in education broadly conceived.

Pediatric Skeletal Scintigraphy With Multimodality Imaging Correlations【電子書籍】[ L.P. Connolly ]

Pediatric Radiology texts typically provide only a cursory discussion of pediatric nuclear medicine techniques and applications while pediatric nuclear medicine texts typically review the so-called "structural imaging" modalities in only a superficial fashion. The standard texts do not adequately address the similarities and differences among different imaging modalities (X-rays, scintigraphy, ultrasonography, angiography, CT, MRI, etc.). The result is that the reader of these texts can not gain an understanding of the true role of nuclear medicine in pediatrics. With PEDIATRIC SKELETAL SCINTIGRAPHY, DRS. Connolly and Treves demonstrate the relative merits of scinitigraphy and other imaging tests in evaluating pediatric skeletal disorders. The emphasis is on situations where a complementary relationship exists between nuclear medicine and other modalities. In addition to showing cases in which scintigraphy is abnormal and structural imaging normal, the book also features cases where both scintigraphy and structural imaging are abnormal. The reader will gain an understanding of what can be gained from each modality, and when specific studies are indicated.

Gunther Kress, one of the founders of social semiotics and multimodality, has made lasting contributions to these fields through his work in semiotics and meaning-making; power and identity; agency, design, production; and pedagogy and learning; in varied sites of transformation. This book brings together leading scholars in a variety of disciplines, including social semiotics, pedagogy, linguistics, media and communication studies, new literacy studies, ethnography, academic literacy, literary criticism and, more recently, medical/clinical education, to examine and build upon his work. This disciplinary diversity is evidence of the ways in which Kress' work has influenced and been influenced by a wide range of academic work and intellectual endeavors and how it has been used to lay foundations for theory-building and concept development in a varied yet connected range of areas.

The individual contributions to the book pick up the threads of the often collaborative work of the authors with Kress; they show how these approaches were subsequently developed and discuss what future trajectories the authors see for them.

Open-Access, Multimodality, and Writing Center Studies【電子書籍】[ Elisabeth H. Buck ]

The disciplinary triad of open-access, multimodality, and writing center studies presents a timely, critical lens for discussing academic publishing in a moment of crucibilic change, where rapid technological advancements force scholars and institutions to question what is produced and “counts” as academic writing.

Using historiographic, quantitative, and qualitative analysis, Open-Access, Multimodality, and Writing Center Studies sees writing center scholarship as a microcosm of many of the larger issues at play in the contemporary academic publishing landscape. This case study approach reveals the complex, imbricated ways that questions about publishing manifest both within the content of journals, and as related to academics’ perceptions as signifiers of disciplinary visibility, identity, and transformation.

More than just reaffirming the conventional wisdom about these changes in publishingーthat these shifts are happening and we do not always know how to pinpoint themーOpen-Access, Multimodality, and Writing Center Studies suggests that scholars in all fields, compositionists, and writing center practitioners be conscious of the ways they are complicit in maintaining barriers to accessibility and innovation.

Chapter 5 of this book is available open access under a CC BY 4.0 license at link.springer.com.

This book explores the practical aspects of intersemiotic translation, examining how different signs and sign sets can be transposed into different kinds of semiotic forms of reference. Drawing on theories from translation studies, semiotics, philosophy and stylistics, the author seeks to understand what happens when texts are translated from one genre or modality to another, and makes use of examples ranging from written texts to advertising, images, music, painting, photography, and sculpture. She also analyses related topics such as the differences between Romance and Germanic languages, the difficulties that arise when attempts are made to translate figures of speech or elements of authorial style, and how this interdisciplinary field relates to traditional language-based translation. This book will be of interest to students, teachers, translators and researchers working in the fields of translation studies and multimodality in particular.

This Element presents and critically discusses video-mediated communication by combining theories and empirical methods of multimodal studies and translanguaging. Since Covid-19 gained momentum, video-based interactions have become more and more ingrained in private and public lives and to the point of being fully incorporated in a wide range of community practices in personal, work and educational environments. The meaning making of video communication results from the complex, situationally based and culturally influenced and interlaced components of different semiotic resources and practices. These include the use of speech, writing, translingual practices, gaze behaviour, proxemics and kinesics patterns, as well as forms of embodied interaction. The Element aims at unpacking these resources and at interpreting how they make meanings to improve and encourage active and responsible participation in the current digital scenarios.

On Comics and Legal Aesthetics Multimodality and the Haunted Mask of Knowing【電子書籍】[ Thomas Giddens ]

What are the implications of comics for law? Tackling this question, On Comics and Legal Aesthetics explores the epistemological dimensions of comics and the way this once-maligned medium can help think about ? and reshape ? the form of law. Traversing comics, critical, and cultural legal studies, it seeks to enrich the theorisation of comics with a critical aesthetics that expands its value and significance for law, as well as knowledge more generally. It argues that comics’ multimodality ? its hybrid structure, which represents a meeting point of text, image, reason, and aesthetics ? opens understanding of the limits of law’s rational texts by shifting between multiple frames and modes of presentation. Comics thereby exposes the way all forms of knowledge are shaped out of an unstructured universe, becoming a mask over this chaotic ‘beyond’. This mask of knowing remains haunted ? by that which it can never fully capture or represent. Comics thus models knowledge as an infinity of nested frames haunted by the chaos without structure. In such a model, the multiple aspects of law become one region of a vast and bottomless cascade of perspectives ? an infinite multiframe that extends far beyond the traditional confines of the comics page, rendering law boundless.
