Of personal interest to Latter-day Saints is Nauvoo, City of the Saints, and beacon to early-day converts in the Church. The focal point of Nauvoo itself was the temple, center of activity for the Latter-day Saints.

In The Nauvoo Temple E. Cecil McGavin has gathered information from friend and foe alike to produce a volume that is rich in background for the learning of these early days of Latter-day Saint history. Little-known facts have been assembled to present a convincing record of the second temple of the Latter-day Saints.

Even the exodus of the Saints from their beautiful city and the destruction of the temple which they had built at such cost and effort did not halt their work. The author indicates: “The destruction of the Nauvoo Temple was a serious tragedy, yet the building was worth every cent it cost to build. . . . The spirit of temple work did not perish in the flames that devoured the woodwork of the temple. From the ruins of the sacred building the spirit of Elijah found a welcome sanctuary in the hearts and homes of the Saints all over the world.”

The Nauvoo Temple is a good book to have available to read during this later day when Latter-day Saints the world over are thrilling to the knowledge that there is a plan moving ahead to restore Nauvoo the Beautiful.

Nauvoo Mormon City on the Mississippi River【電子書籍】[ Raymond Bial ]

In 1839, persecuted Mormons fled Missouri, across the Mississippi River, seeking freedom from violence. They hoped to find a safe haven on the banks of the river in an Illinois city that they called Nauvoo, “the city beautiful.”

The Mormons did not flourish for long in Nauvoo. In neighboring cities some grew resentful of the prosperity that Joseph Smith and his people were enjoying. Religious misconceptions further fueled hostility toward the Mormons. Would the oft-persecuted Mormons have to flee their city beautiful?

Through poignant writing and photographs of Nauvoo today, Raymond Bial tells the story of the city that many Mormons consider to be the wellspring of their religion.

Return to the City of Joseph Modern Mormonism's Contest for the Soul of Nauvoo【電子書籍】[ Scott C. Esplin ]

In the mid-twentieth century, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) returned to Nauvoo, Illinois, home to the thriving religious community led by Joseph Smith before his murder in 1844. The quiet farm town became a major Mormon heritage site visited annually by tens of thousands of people. Yet Nauvoo's dramatic restoration proved fraught with conflicts. Scott C. Esplin's social history looks at how Nauvoo's different groups have sparred over heritage and historical memory. The Latter-day Saint project brought it into conflict with the Community of Christ, the Midwestern branch of Mormonism that had kept a foothold in the town and a claim on its Smith-related sites. Non-Mormon locals, meanwhile, sought to maintain the historic place of ancestors who had settled in Nauvoo after the Latter-day Saints' departure. Examining the recent and present-day struggles to define the town, Esplin probes the values of the local groups while placing Nauvoo at the center of Mormonism's attempt to carve a role for itself within the greater narrative of American history.

Henry Caswall's 'The City of the Mormons; or, Three Days at Nauvoo, in 1842' is a significant text that provides a detailed account of the author's three-day visit to Nauvoo, the city founded by Joseph Smith, the founder of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Caswall's firsthand observations of the practices, beliefs, and daily life of the Mormons offer a captivating glimpse into a religious community that was both admired and feared during the 19th century. The book is written in a descriptive and narrative style, combining elements of travel writing and religious commentary to present a vivid picture of Nauvoo and its inhabitants. Caswall's keen eye for detail and his unbiased approach make this book a valuable historical document for scholars and enthusiasts of Mormon history. Henry Caswall, a British Anglican clergyman and travel writer, was known for his travels to various religious communities and his critical examination of their beliefs and practices. His background in theology and his interest in religious movements likely contributed to his decision to visit Nauvoo and document his experiences. Kingdom of Nauvoo: The Rise and Fall of a Religious Empire on the American Frontier【電子書籍】[ Benjamin E. Park ]

Best Book Award ? Mormon History Association
A brilliant young historian excavates the brief life of a lost Mormon city, uncovering a “grand, underappreciated saga in American history” (Wall Street Journal).

In Kingdom of Nauvoo, Benjamin E. Park draws on newly available sources to re-create the founding and destruction of the Mormon city of Nauvoo. On the banks of the Mississippi in Illinois, the early Mormons built a religious utopia, establishing their own army and writing their own constitution. For those offenses and othersーincluding the introduction of polygamy, which was bitterly opposed by Emma Smith, the iron-willed first wife of Joseph Smithーthe surrounding population violently ejected the Mormons, sending them on their flight to Utah. Throughout his absorbing chronicle, Park shows how the Mormons of Nauvoo were representative of their era, and in doing so elevates Mormon history into the American mainstream.

Nauvoo Polygamy "…but we called it celestial marriage"【電子書籍】[ George D. Smith ]

“This is a meticulously researched and skillfully written work on Mormon polygamy. The author does not take sides in this tangled web of theology and practice, but instead has produced what may well be the definitive work on polygamy. I highly recommend it.” ーLinda King Newell, co-author, Mormon Enigma: Emma Hale Smith

“Nauvoo Polygamy is s a thorough investigation of sexual politics in the City of the Saints, the 1840s Mormon headquarters in the U.S. State of Illinois. Written with precision, clarity, and ease, it is a major contribution to Mormon history, groundbreaking in identifying the other polygamists who followed the lead of their prophet, Joseph Smith, in taking multiple partners.” ーKlaus J. Hansen, Professor Emeritus of History, Queen’s University, Ontario

“If for no other reason, the inclusion of chapter 6 makes this book worth its price. The chapter quotes liberally from those like Elizabeth Ann Whitney and Bathsheba Smith who accepted polygamy rather easily, those like Jane Richards who accepted it only reluctantly, and those like Patty Sessions who found plural marriage almost unbearable. A bonus is chapter 9 which provides a concise historical overview of polygamous societies in Reformation Europe, touches on similar societies in America, and offers an extended discussion of Orson Pratt’s 1852 defense of plural marriage.” ーThomas G. Alexander, Professor Emeritus of History, Brigham Young University

“George Smith shows how many of the prophet’s followers embraced plural marriage during a period when the LDS Church was emphatically denying the practice … [and he tells this in] a lucid writing style.” ーDaniel Walker Howe, Pulitzer Prize winning author of What Hath God Wrought: The Transformation of America, 1815-1848.

“An extremely important contribution to the history of polygamy … that allows us to see how Joseph Smith’s marriages fit into the context of his daily life.” ーTodd M. The Writings of Oliver Olney April 1842 to February 1843 ー Nauvoo, Illinois【電子書籍】[ Oliver H. Olney ]

Oliver H. Olney, an early convert to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, fled to Nauvoo, Illinois, following persecution in Missouri. In Nauvoo, Olney became disgruntled with church leadership and viewed Joseph Smith as a fallen prophet. His writings, consisting of journal entries, letters, and booklets, express his concerns about what he viewed as serious iniquity within the Church. Despite his opposition to church leadership resulting in his excommunication, Olney remained in Nauvoo and wrote about the things he witnessed.

The handwritten papers of Oliver Olney are housed in the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library at Yale University and are made available in published form for the first time. They offer historical researchers and interested readers of the early Latter-day Saint movement a unique glimpse from the margins of religious society in Nauvoo. Olney’s writings add light to key events in early Mormonism such as rumors of polygamy, the influence of Free Masonry in Nauvoo, plans to migrate westward to the Rocky Mountains, as well as growing tensions with disaffected church members and rising conflict with Nauvoo’s non-Mormon neighbors.

EDINA PUBLISHER'S NOTE:

This is a reprinting of the newspaper published in Nauvoo, Illinois which led to Joseph Smith's arrest and, indirectly, his death. Only one edition of the newspaper was ever printed. Joseph Smith called the newspaper a "nuisance" and said that the publishers had "formed a conspiracy for the purpose of destroying [his] life" [History of the Church, vol. 6, p. 432]. Joseph ordered the printing press destroyed and the order was carried out on June 10th, 1844. Joseph was arrested on June 25th and was killed by a mob on June 27, 1844.

The following was edited and put into novel format for readability. A House for the Most High: The Story of the Original Nauvoo Temple【電子書籍】[ Matthew S. McBride ]

This awe-inspiring book is a tribute to the perseverance of the human spirit. A House for the Most High is a groundbreaking work from beginning to end with its faithful and comprehensive documentation of the Nauvoo Temple’s conception. The behind-the-scenes stories of those determined Saints involved in the great struggle to raise the sacred edifice bring a new appreciation to all readers. McBride’s painstaking research now gives us access to valuable first-hand accounts that are drawn straight from the newspaper articles, private diaries, journals, and letters of the steadfast participants.
The opening of this volume gives the reader an extraordinary window into the early temple-building labors of the besieged Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the development of what would become temple-related doctrines in the decade prior to the Nauvoo era, and the 1839 advent of the Saints in Illinois. The main body of this fascinating history covers the significant years, starting from 1840, when this temple was first considered, to the temple’s early destruction by a devastating natural disaster. A well-thought-out conclusion completes the epic by telling of the repurchase of the temple lot by the Church in 1937, the lot’s excavation in 1962, and the grand announcement in 1999 that the temple would indeed be rebuilt.
