The Book of Mormon Written by the Hand of Mormon, Upon Plates Taken from the Plates of Nephi【電子書籍】[ Joseph Smith Jr. ]

The Book of Mormon is a sacred text of the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, which contains writings of ancient prophets who lived on the American continent from approximately 2200 BC to AD 421. The Book of Mormon is the earliest of the unique writings of the Latter-day Saint movement, the denominations of which typically regard the text primarily as scripture, and secondarily as a historical record of God's dealings with the ancient inhabitants of the Americas. According to Smith's account and the book's narrative, the Book of Mormon was originally written in otherwise unknown characters referred to as "reformed Egyptian" engraved on golden plates. Smith said that the last prophet to contribute to the book, a man named Moroni, buried it in the Hill Cumorah in present-day Manchester, New York, before his death, and then appeared in a vision to Smith in 1827 as an angel, revealing the location of the plates, and instructing him to translate the plates into English for use in the restoration of Christ's true church in the latter days

The Lost Book of Mormon A Journey Through the Mythic Lands of Nephi, Zarahemla, and Kansas City, Missouri【電子書籍】[ Avi Steinberg ]

Is the Book of Mormon the Great American Novel? Decades before Melville and Twain composed their great works, a farmhand and child seer named Joseph Smith unearthed a long-buried book from a haunted hill in western New York State that told of an epic history of ancient America, a story about a family that fled biblical Jerusalem and took a boat to the New World. Using his prophetic gift, Joseph translated the mysterious book into English and published it under the title The Book of Mormon. The book caused an immediate sensation, sparking anger and violence, boycotts and jealousy, curiosity and wonder, and launched Joseph on a wild, decades-long adventure across the American West.

Today The Book of Mormon, one of the most widely circulating works of American literature, continues to cause controversyーwhich is why most of us know very little about the story it tells.

Avi Steinberg wants to change that. A fascinated nonbeliever, Steinberg spent a year and a half on a personal quest, traveling the path laid out by Joseph’s epic. Starting in Jerusalem, where The Book of Mormon opens with a bloody murder, Steinberg continued to the ruined Maya cities of Central Americaーthe setting for most of the The Book of Mormon’s ancient storyーwhere he gallivanted with a boisterous bus tour of believers exploring Maya archaeological sites for evidence. From there the journey took him to upstate New York, where he participated in the true Book of Mormon musical, the annual Hill Cumorah Pageant. And finally Steinberg arrived at the center of the American continent, Jackson County, Missouri, the spot Smith identified as none other than the site of the Garden of Eden.

Threaded through this quirky travelogue is an argument for taking The Book of Mormon seriously as a work of American imagination. Literate and funny, personal and provocative, the genre-bending The Lost Book of Mormon boldly explores our deeply human impulse to write bibles and discovers the abiding power of story.

A Young Folks' History of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints【電子書籍】[ Nephi Anderson ]

According to Wikipedia: "The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (often colloquially referred to as the Mormon Church, a term the organization itself discourages) is the largest denomination originating from the Latter Day Saint movement founded by Joseph Smith, Jr., on April 6, 1830. The church is headquartered in Salt Lake City, Utah, and has established congregations (called wards or branches) worldwide. As of 2007, the church reported just over 13 million members on its rolls. Based on this number, it is the fourth largest Christian denomination in the United States. Adherentsーusually referred to as Latter-day Saints, LDS, or Mormonsーare restorationist Christians and are not a part of the Catholicism, Orthodox, or Protestant traditions. Like other Restorationist organizations, the LDS Church teaches that after the events described in the New Testament, there was a Great Apostasy, or "falling away" from the true Christian faith and priesthood. The church teaches that this true faith and priesthood were restored to Joseph Smith, Jr. through Smith's prophecy and the visitation of angels in the early 1800s. Thus, the church teaches that it is the only organization on the Earth with authority to conduct valid Christian sacraments ("ordinances") such as baptism or the Eucharist (called by LDS the "Sacrament"). The church also practices other sacraments, said to have been restored or instituted by Joseph Smith, such as Celestial marriage."

Second Witness: Analytical and Contextual Commentary on the Book of Mormon: Volume 2 - Second Nephi through Jacob【電子書籍】[ Brant A. Gardner ]

Stop looking for the Book of Mormon in Mesoamerica and start looking for Mesoamerica in the Book of Mormon! Second Witness, a new six-volume series from Greg Kofford Books, takes a detailed, verse-by-verse look at the Book of Mormon. It marshals the best of modern scholarship and new insights into a consistent picture of the Book of Mormon as a historical document. Taking a faithful but scholarly approach to the text and reading it through the insights of linguistics, anthropology, and ethnohistory, the commentary approaches the text from a variety of perspectives: how it was created, how it relates to history and culture, and what religious insights it provides.
The commentary accepts the best modern scholarship, which focuses on a particular region of Mesoamerica as the most plausible location for the Book of Mormon’s setting. For the first time, that locationーits peoples, cultures, and historical trendsーare used as the backdrop for reading the text. The historical background is not presented as proof, but rather as an explanatory context.
The commentary does not forget Mormon’s purpose in writing. It discusses the doctrinal and theological aspects of the text and highlights the way in which Mormon created it to meet his goal of “convincing . . . the Jew and Gentile that Jesus is the Christ, the Eternal God.”

Praise for Second Witness:

“Gardner not only provides a unique tool for understanding the Book of Mormon as an ancient document written by real, living prophets, but he sets a standard for Latter-day Saint thinking and writing about scripture, providing a model for all who follow. One can only hope that others who write about scripture will see what he has done and imitate it in their own way. . . . No other reference source will prove as thorough and valuable for serious readers of the Book of Mormon.” ー FARMS Review, Neal A Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship

“Second Witness: Analytical & Contextual Commentary on the Book of Mormon by Brant Gardner is the most comprehensive commentary on the Book of Mormon to date. . . . [It is] a watershed event in scholarly LDS publication history.” ー Blair Hodges, Life on Gold Plates

“If there is any merit to the publication of yet another Book of Mormon commentary, it ought to bring forth information that will be new to readers. It should add perspective to the scriptures. It should cause the reader to go back to the text and re-examine it in a new light. In every way, Gardner's effort does all of this, and more.” ー Jeffrey Needle, Association for Mormon Letters

My aim was to make the children of our Church familiar with the events described in the Book of Mormon, and with some of the prominent men of that mighty people of which Nephi was one of the greatest progenitors. First Nephi: The Doctrinal Foundation The Doctrinal Foundation【電子書籍】[ Monte S. Nyman ]

In a variety of themes and approaches, the symposium papers reproduced in this volume explore in unusual depth and detail the first book in the Book of MormonーFirst Nephi. The introductory chapter, comprising remarks by Elder Neal A. Maxwell, centers on the value of the Book of Mormon in answering "the great question... Is there really a redeeming Christ?" His emphatic answer is yes, and that from the title page to the last page of this sacred scripture "God's encompassing purposes are set forth." The ensuing chapters reinforce that concept. One of them reviews the historical background of the plates from which the Book of Mormon was translated, while another examines the title page itself, citing Joseph Smith's notation that it was a "literal translation, taken from the... book of plates." Other contributors demonstrate how the Book of Mormon is another testament of Jesus Christ; how its biblical allusions and its affirmations of God's dealings with man establish the truth of the Bible; and how textual evidences further verify the authenticity of the Book of Mormon. Both theological and practical issues are considered. B. H. Roberts's writings on the Book of Mormon and the Atonement are explored, for example, and an examination of early Christianity as described in First Nephi gives particular attention to what is there referred to as the great and abominable church. It is shown also that by small means God brings about great things, and thatーalong with using the Book of Mormon as a guideーkeeping the commandments, following living prophets, and seeking personal revelation are vital to the objective of living close to the Lord. Another prominent theme in First Nephi is the Tree of Life vision. One contributor suggests how this vision teaches the pattern of the eternal family; another notes that Nephi's vision of the grand vistas of the future teaches much about faith, the attributes of God, and the mysteries of God; a third examines a possible archaeological depiction of the Tree of Life of Lehi's and Nephi's visions. In a review of the migrations to the "land choice above all others," details of the geography and customs of those times give valuable insights into Lehi's arduous trek; an analysis of Lehi's voyage demonstrates how readers can expand their understanding of such an event; and a discussion shows how the promised land was prepared and protected by the Lord and then opened to various groups of people at appropriate times. Bringing the book to a close, President Jeffrey R. Holland adds his testimony that the Book of Mormon was "written, watched over, preserved, revealed, translated, published, and carried to the world to declareーagainーthat... God does speak to men."

If the reader will concentrate on one verse at a time, drain the essential message from it, read any background material provided in the book by W. Cleon Skousen, and then apply the verse to his or her own life, they will be richly blessed.

By this means, the reader will have a chance to absorb the message far more deeply and make the Book of Mormon a vital part of daily living.

These books are easy to read and have proven highly popular with seminary students and those preparing for missions. They are also used as a family home evening course of study.

Volume Four covers 3 Nephi 8 to Moroni 10.

Discovering Lehi: New Evidence of Lehi and Nephi in Arabia【電子書籍】[ Lynn M. Hilton ]

This “fascinating Mormon odyssey” was first commissioned by The Ensign. But no mention was ever made in that work of the Lihyan (Arabic transliteration for “The People of Lehi”) civilization and the remarkable possibilities found in its Arabian ruins. In addition to the Hilton’s original research, they have discovered volumes of new evidence and new possibilities. The findings in this book may just be the sign saying, “I, Lehi, was here.” It is possible that Lehi and Nephi were actually great missionaries; that they converted thousands as hinted at in D&C 33:8-10. This new evidence suggests that Arabian converts of Nephi and Levi grew in number and influence and prospered (as all civilizations of The Book of Mormon were promised) over a period of 1000 years until they actually ruled Arabia for an additional 300 years. This work may be the most remarkable evidence currently available that Levi and Nephi actually existed and may be the only research to date to actually pinpoint Book of Mormon locations with any degree of accuracy. It is astounding that the city Nephi referred to as Nahum actually exists today as a city of ancient origins. It conforms to the Book of Mormon description of the burial place of Ishmael and the point where they changed their direction of travel from south-southeast to nearly eastward toward Bountiful. Here within our very grasp may be the first physical and historical evidence that Lehi and Nephi, lived, breathed, struggled and taught the gospel as marvelous and influential prophets of The Book of Mormon.

Biography of Nephi Aaron Skinner【電子書籍】[ Earnest M Skinner ]

Nephi Aaron Skinner was born December 8, 1876, at Nounan, Bear Lake County, Idaho. He was the youngest child of thirteen children (eight sons and five daughters) of John and Jane Smith Skinner. He is known to have been the first white child born in the new settlement of Nounan. Since there were no doctors in the area until 1882, it seems safe to assume that his birth was assisted by one of the popular midwives of the community, Sister Philip Chugg.
His father and mother emigrated from England in 1856 to America and located in upstate New York. In 1868, they decided to come west to Zion. They came to Providence, Utah, for a short time and were later called by the Church leaders in 1875 to settle in the Bear Lake area in the valley that was to be known as Nounan. It is reported that they first lived in the middle of three log houses built a year before by cattlemen to care for cattle. There is a "low spot" in the land where the cellar part of the house was located. It was in this home that Nephi was born during the month of December. Winters were so severe with cold and snow that the only mode of transportation to get out of the valley was on snowshoes. At the appropriate time his parents chose the names of Nephi and Aaron, common names in the Book of Mormon and Bible, with which his father blessed him.

Things Which My Father Saw: Approaches to Lehi's Dream and Nephi's Vision The 40th Annual Brigham Young University Sidney B. Sperry Symposium【電子書籍】[ Sperry Symposium ]

Did you know that Lehi dreamed of you? And not only of you but of your family and your trials? President Boyd K. Packer spoke of Lehi's dream and challenged listeners to find meaning in the drea: "You may think that Lehi's dream or vision has no special meaning for you, but it does. You are in it; all of us are in it. Nephi said, '[All scripture is likened] unto us, that it might be for our profit and learning' (1 Nephi 19:23). Lehi's dream or vision of the iron rod has in it everything a Latter-day Saint needs to understand the test of life."

Those who read of Lehi's dream today can sympathize with Lehi's plight. Lehi's dream speaks to all of us who find ourselves, at times, battling the dark and dreary trials of mortality. The dream exemplifies our own struggle to return to our Heavenly Father and can also guide us through this stage of the plan of salvation.

One individual who was clearly influenced by the power of Lehi's dream was his son Nephi, who, upon hearing his father recount the particulars of the dream, desired to have a similar revelatory experience. Nephi became a witness of and recorder to one of the most detailed visionary discourses on Christ's ministry. Nephi understood the individualized nature of his vision and provides a scriptural example of President Packer's invitation to find ourselves in the dream.

From the Book of Mormon's first printing, Lehi's dream and Nephi's vision have resonated in the latter-day spiritual imagination, fulfilling President Packer's challenge. Likewise, The Things Which My Father Saw presents several papers that provide insights into the ancient setting, the meaning of the symbols, and their gospel application, which were delivered at the 40th Sidney B. Sperry Symposium held at Brigham Young University. The Things Which My Father Saw helps us realize President Packer's hope that we can see that we "are in" this important passage of scripture.

The following gospel scholars are contributors to the 40th Annual Sperry Symposium on Lehi's dream and Nephi's vision:

Kenneth L. 2 Nephi Through a Biblical Lens【電子書籍】[ Liscum ]

In this penetrating expos?, David Liscum delivers a chapter-by-chapter takedown of 2 Nephi, one of the foundational books of the Book of Mormon. With razor-sharp discernment and the boldness of a street preacher confronting a false prophet, this work unmasks the theological, historical, and moral failures embedded deep in the text that Mormons hold sacred.

The claims are not just false-they are absurd.

Joseph Smith, the self-proclaimed prophet of the Restoration, boldly declared himself to be a direct descendant of Joseph of Egypt. Yet DNA evidence debunks this outright. His bloodline traces to Europe, not the Middle East. The Book of Mormon's own internal claims collapse under the weight of science and common sense. This alone should disqualify the Book of Mormon from being received as divine revelation. But it doesn't stop there.

Smith plagiarizes entire chapters of Isaiah-word for word-from the King James Version, errors and all, throwing them haphazardly into his narrative whenever he seems to run out of ideas. Rather than divine prophecy, this reads like a man padding his manuscript. Whole chapters of Isaiah are stuffed into 2 Nephi without context, without transition, and without any relevance to the alleged Nephite people in the Americas. Isaiah spoke to Judah and Jerusalem, not to some unknown civilization thousands of miles away.

Worse still, 2 Nephi presents a bizarre and blasphemous theology. From the "infinite atonement" (a term never used in Scripture) to the universal resurrection of the wicked unto eternal glory, this book warps the gospel into something unrecognizable. The substitutionary atonement, the justice and wrath of God, and the doctrine of eternal judgment are either misrepresented or entirely absent. Joseph Smith's strange doctrine includes:

Denial of eternal punishment

The belief that "Adam fell that men might be"-a corruption of Genesis 3

The teaching that God cannot be God without evil, contradicting the holiness of God (Habakkuk 1:13)

The assertion that a seer is greater than Jesus (2 Nephi 3), an offense reminiscent of Islamic exaltation of Muhammad

Operation without a Levitical priesthood while claiming Mosaic obedience

Use of divination tools like the Liahona-strictly forbidden in Deuteronomy 18

And if all that weren't enough, 2 Nephi 5:21 stumbles into one of the most openly racist doctrines in American religious history: "a skin of blackness" as a divine curse. Later changed by the LDS Church to appear more palatable, the damage is already done. The 1830 version of the Book of Mormon says what it says.

There are anachronisms and historical blunders throughout-steel weapons in 600 BC, the phrase "born at Jerusalem" (Luke 2:4-7 clearly says Bethlehem), and misplaced Mosaic theology in a New World context.

Second Witness: Analytical and Contextual Commentary on the Book of Mormon: Volume 1 - First Nephi【電子書籍】[ Brant A.

A Young Folks' History Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-day Saints【電子書籍】[ NEPHI ANDERSON ]

A PARABLE.

Once upon a time the owner of a very large garden planted therein a tree, the fruit of which was very precious and of great value to all who ate of it. For a time, the tree grew and bore much good fruit. But the owner of the garden had an enemy who went about secretly sowing seeds of weeds and all manner of briers and brush, that they might spread all over the garden and kill out the good tree which the master had planted. The enemy also persuaded many of the workmen in the garden to neglect the good tree, and let the briers and weeds grow up around it and so prevent its growth. Thus in time the once precious fruit of the good tree became wild and scrubby, no better than the enemy's trees which grew around it.

Years passed, and the master, grieving that the precious fruit should have become so worthless, determined to plant the good tree once more in the garden. He did not try to clear away a spot for it amid the old, overgrown parts of the land, but he called upon certain workers to go to a distant part of the garden where nothing had been planted for a long time, and there prepare the ground for the planting of the tree.................

The Vision of All: Twenty-five Lectures on Isaiah in Nephi’s Record【電子書籍】[ Joseph M. Spencer ]

In The Vision of All, Joseph Spencer draws on the best of biblical and Latter-day Saint scholarship to make sense of the so-called “Isaiah chapters” in the first two books of the Book of Mormon. Arguing that Isaiah lies at the very heart of Nephi’s project, Spencer insists on demystifying the writings of Isaiah while nonetheless refusing to pretend that Isaiah is in any way easy to grasp. Presented as a series of down-to-earth lectures, The Vision of All outlines a comprehensive answer to the question of why Nephi was interested in Isaiah in the first place. Along the way, the book presents both a general approach to reading Isaiah in the Book of Mormon and a set of specific tactics for making sense of Isaiah's writings. For anyone interested in understanding what Isaiah is doing in the Book of Mormon, this is the place to start.

Praise for The Vision of All:

“Joseph Spencer uses a lecture style to gently ease his readers into what many Book of Mormon readers fear the mostーIsaiah. Spencer’s approach carefully replaces the fear with understanding, elucidates textual complexities, examines scholarly issues, and is remarkably helpful in showing his readers how and why we should care deeply about the presence of this Old World prophet in our New World scripture.” ー Brant A. Gardner, author of Traditions of the Fathers: The Book of Mormon as History

“With this book, Joseph M. Spencer has accomplished a remarkable feat. He has produced a reader-friendly, engaging study of the writings of Isaiah in the Book of Mormon that makes Isaiah accessible without overly-simplifying his theology and message. After reading Spencer’s book, Latter-day Saints will more fully understand why Nephi devoted so much of his life and writings to Isaiah and why Jesus expressed to the Nephites that ‘great are the words of Isaiah.’ This book needs to be on the shelf of every serious Book of Mormon student.” ー Nicholas J. Frederick, Assistant Professor of Ancient Scripture, Brigham Young University, author of The Bible, Mormon Scripture, and the “Rhetoric of Allusivity”

“Spencer is one of the most careful readers of scripture in Mormon Studies and this book puts his skill on full display. . . . The Vision of All is easily one of the best books in the genre.” ー Walker Wright, Worlds Without End
