The Book of Mormon Written by the Hand of Mormon, Upon Plates Taken from the Plates of Nephi【電子書籍】[ Joseph Smith Jr. ]

The Book of Mormon is a sacred text of the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, which contains writings of ancient prophets who lived on the American continent from approximately 2200 BC to AD 421. The Book of Mormon is the earliest of the unique writings of the Latter-day Saint movement, the denominations of which typically regard the text primarily as scripture, and secondarily as a historical record of God's dealings with the ancient inhabitants of the Americas. According to Smith's account and the book's narrative, the Book of Mormon was originally written in otherwise unknown characters referred to as "reformed Egyptian" engraved on golden plates. Smith said that the last prophet to contribute to the book, a man named Moroni, buried it in the Hill Cumorah in present-day Manchester, New York, before his death, and then appeared in a vision to Smith in 1827 as an angel, revealing the location of the plates, and instructing him to translate the plates into English for use in the restoration of Christ's true church in the latter days

A Young Folks' History of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints【電子書籍】[ Nephi Anderson ]

According to Wikipedia: "The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (often colloquially referred to as the Mormon Church, a term the organization itself discourages) is the largest denomination originating from the Latter Day Saint movement founded by Joseph Smith, Jr., on April 6, 1830. The church is headquartered in Salt Lake City, Utah, and has established congregations (called wards or branches) worldwide. As of 2007, the church reported just over 13 million members on its rolls. Based on this number, it is the fourth largest Christian denomination in the United States. Adherentsーusually referred to as Latter-day Saints, LDS, or Mormonsーare restorationist Christians and are not a part of the Catholicism, Orthodox, or Protestant traditions. Like other Restorationist organizations, the LDS Church teaches that after the events described in the New Testament, there was a Great Apostasy, or "falling away" from the true Christian faith and priesthood. The church teaches that this true faith and priesthood were restored to Joseph Smith, Jr. through Smith's prophecy and the visitation of angels in the early 1800s. Thus, the church teaches that it is the only organization on the Earth with authority to conduct valid Christian sacraments ("ordinances") such as baptism or the Eucharist (called by LDS the "Sacrament"). The church also practices other sacraments, said to have been restored or instituted by Joseph Smith, such as Celestial marriage."

My aim was to make the children of our Church familiar with the events described in the Book of Mormon, and with some of the prominent men of that mighty people of which Nephi was one of the greatest progenitors. Various causesーthe principal one of which has been the pressure of other and more exacting laborsーhave prevented me from carrying my design into execution until the present time. I have felt that, as I owed so much of my own success in life to the important and interesting lessons contained in that precious record, it was a duty incumbent upon me to do all in my power to have it read and appreciated as widely as possible by every member of our Church, but especially by the rising generation.

The Lost Book of Mormon A Journey Through the Mythic Lands of Nephi, Zarahemla, and Kansas City, Missouri【電子書籍】[ Avi Steinberg ]

Is the Book of Mormon the Great American Novel? Decades before Melville and Twain composed their great works, a farmhand and child seer named Joseph Smith unearthed a long-buried book from a haunted hill in western New York State that told of an epic history of ancient America, a story about a family that fled biblical Jerusalem and took a boat to the New World. Using his prophetic gift, Joseph translated the mysterious book into English and published it under the title The Book of Mormon. The book caused an immediate sensation, sparking anger and violence, boycotts and jealousy, curiosity and wonder, and launched Joseph on a wild, decades-long adventure across the American West.

Today The Book of Mormon, one of the most widely circulating works of American literature, continues to cause controversyーwhich is why most of us know very little about the story it tells.

Avi Steinberg wants to change that. A fascinated nonbeliever, Steinberg spent a year and a half on a personal quest, traveling the path laid out by Joseph’s epic. Starting in Jerusalem, where The Book of Mormon opens with a bloody murder, Steinberg continued to the ruined Maya cities of Central Americaーthe setting for most of the The Book of Mormon’s ancient storyーwhere he gallivanted with a boisterous bus tour of believers exploring Maya archaeological sites for evidence. From there the journey took him to upstate New York, where he participated in the true Book of Mormon musical, the annual Hill Cumorah Pageant. And finally Steinberg arrived at the center of the American continent, Jackson County, Missouri, the spot Smith identified as none other than the site of the Garden of Eden.

Threaded through this quirky travelogue is an argument for taking The Book of Mormon seriously as a work of American imagination. Literate and funny, personal and provocative, the genre-bending The Lost Book of Mormon boldly explores our deeply human impulse to write bibles and discovers the abiding power of story.

Second Witness: Analytical and Contextual Commentary on the Book of Mormon: Volume 2 - Second Nephi through Jacob【電子書籍】[ Brant A. Gardner ]

Stop looking for the Book of Mormon in Mesoamerica and start looking for Mesoamerica in the Book of Mormon! Second Witness, a new six-volume series from Greg Kofford Books, takes a detailed, verse-by-verse look at the Book of Mormon. It marshals the best of modern scholarship and new insights into a consistent picture of the Book of Mormon as a historical document. Taking a faithful but scholarly approach to the text and reading it through the insights of linguistics, anthropology, and ethnohistory, the commentary approaches the text from a variety of perspectives: how it was created, how it relates to history and culture, and what religious insights it provides.
The commentary accepts the best modern scholarship, which focuses on a particular region of Mesoamerica as the most plausible location for the Book of Mormon’s setting. For the first time, that locationーits peoples, cultures, and historical trendsーare used as the backdrop for reading the text. The historical background is not presented as proof, but rather as an explanatory context.
The commentary does not forget Mormon’s purpose in writing. It discusses the doctrinal and theological aspects of the text and highlights the way in which Mormon created it to meet his goal of “convincing . . . the Jew and Gentile that Jesus is the Christ, the Eternal God.”

Praise for Second Witness:

“Gardner not only provides a unique tool for understanding the Book of Mormon as an ancient document written by real, living prophets, but he sets a standard for Latter-day Saint thinking and writing about scripture, providing a model for all who follow. One can only hope that others who write about scripture will see what he has done and imitate it in their own way. . . . No other reference source will prove as thorough and valuable for serious readers of the Book of Mormon.” ー FARMS Review, Neal A Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship

“Second Witness: Analytical & Contextual Commentary on the Book of Mormon by Brant Gardner is the most comprehensive commentary on the Book of Mormon to date. . . . [It is] a watershed event in scholarly LDS publication history.” ー Blair Hodges, Life on Gold Plates

“If there is any merit to the publication of yet another Book of Mormon commentary, it ought to bring forth information that will be new to readers. It should add perspective to the scriptures. It should cause the reader to go back to the text and re-examine it in a new light. In every way, Gardner's effort does all of this, and more.” ー Jeffrey Needle, Association for Mormon Letters

This book begins with an introduction of what is hoped to be accomplished within its pages. Since the purpose of the Gospel in these latter days is to bring people unto Christ and the Book of Mormon is another testament of Jesus Christ, then our challenge is to build on these fundamental truths. To bring people closer to the truth and the Gospel of Christ through the Book of Mormon is our quest. We hope to not detract from this mission but to enhance it and present evidence that the Book of Mormon is literally true in every sense of the word. In fact, we believe that the Book of Mormon is the most correct book ever written. So, we will start with that premise and work backward, if you will, to collaborate the truth of the Book of Mormon. We are not trying to prove the Book of Mormon is true because we already know that, but what we are going to do is discover and ? nd evidence and proof from the legends, geography, history, archaeology, and some physical attributes that establish the truth. We see the Book of Mormon as the absolute truth that all things are measured against in our study. We realize that much has been already written about this most important scriptural text. It is hoped that these discoveries are as wonderful for you, the reader, as they are for those that have already discovered them.

Things Which My Father Saw: Approaches to Lehi's Dream and Nephi's Vision The 40th Annual Brigham Young University Sidney B. Sperry Symposium【電子書籍】[ Sperry Symposium ]

Did you know that Lehi dreamed of you? And not only of you but of your family and your trials? President Boyd K. Packer spoke of Lehi's dream and challenged listeners to find meaning in the drea: "You may think that Lehi's dream or vision has no special meaning for you, but it does. You are in it; all of us are in it. Nephi said, '[All scripture is likened] unto us, that it might be for our profit and learning' (1 Nephi 19:23). Lehi's dream or vision of the iron rod has in it everything a Latter-day Saint needs to understand the test of life."

Those who read of Lehi's dream today can sympathize with Lehi's plight. Lehi's dream speaks to all of us who find ourselves, at times, battling the dark and dreary trials of mortality. The dream exemplifies our own struggle to return to our Heavenly Father and can also guide us through this stage of the plan of salvation.

One individual who was clearly influenced by the power of Lehi's dream was his son Nephi, who, upon hearing his father recount the particulars of the dream, desired to have a similar revelatory experience. Nephi became a witness of and recorder to one of the most detailed visionary discourses on Christ's ministry. Nephi understood the individualized nature of his vision and provides a scriptural example of President Packer's invitation to find ourselves in the dream.

From the Book of Mormon's first printing, Lehi's dream and Nephi's vision have resonated in the latter-day spiritual imagination, fulfilling President Packer's challenge. Likewise, The Things Which My Father Saw presents several papers that provide insights into the ancient setting, the meaning of the symbols, and their gospel application, which were delivered at the 40th Sidney B. Sperry Symposium held at Brigham Young University. The Things Which My Father Saw helps us realize President Packer's hope that we can see that we "are in" this important passage of scripture.

The following gospel scholars are contributors to the 40th Annual Sperry Symposium on Lehi's dream and Nephi's vision:

Kenneth L.
A PARABLE.

Once upon a time the owner of a very large garden planted therein a tree, the fruit of which was very precious and of great value to all who ate of it. For a time, the tree grew and bore much good fruit. But the owner of the garden had an enemy who went about secretly sowing seeds of weeds and all manner of briers and brush, that they might spread all over the garden and kill out the good tree which the master had planted. The enemy also persuaded many of the workmen in the garden to neglect the good tree, and let the briers and weeds grow up around it and so prevent its growth. Thus in time the once precious fruit of the good tree became wild and scrubby, no better than the enemy's trees which grew around it.

Years passed, and the master, grieving that the precious fruit should have become so worthless, determined to plant the good tree once more in the garden. He did not try to clear away a spot for it amid the old, overgrown parts of the land, but he called upon certain workers to go to a distant part of the garden where nothing had been planted for a long time, and there prepare the ground for the planting of the tree.................

The Small Plates of Nephi【電子書籍】[ George M. Papa ]

In 1820, God and Jesus Christ appeared to 14 year-old Joseph Smith and told him that other messengers would assist him to restore God’s true church upon the earth. On September 22, 1827, a resurrected being, named Moroni, directed Joseph to a depository in a nearby hill, which contained the history of a vast civilization that flourished on the American Continent 1,400 years previous. Part of that record became known as ‘The Small Plates of Nephi’, which is dramatized in this book.

This book is not fiction. The story line is simple. In the year 600 BC, during the first year of the reign of King Zedekiah, Jerusalem was a wicked city that rejected the prophets God sent to call the people to repentance.

One of those prophets was Lehi. One day Jesus Christ commanded Lehi to immediately gather his family and depart into the wilderness that very night, which they did. The reason was because Lehi’s life was in danger and God had other plans for Lehi. Eight years later, Jesus Christ further commanded Nephi, the fourth son of Lehi, to build a ship, with the help of his brothers, to cross the might ocean and come to what is now North America, to begin a new civilization.

At that time, Jesus Christ had not yet been born in the flesh, which was yet to occur some 600 years later. Nevertheless, Jesus Christ, in his pre-mortal and spirit form, as we were also before we were born into mortality, was nevertheless the God Jehovah, of the Old Testament, and thus the chosen project superintendent of this world, under the direction of and with the power of God the Father.

It was Jesus who had created this world for the habitation of mankind, and it was Jesus Christ who called and directed all the prophets, in order to lead the people who would believe in the path of righteousness, salvation and exaltation.

Nephi recorded the events of this journey and the revelation, miracles and blessings that occurred along the way, as a testament of God for the benefit of mankind. Joseph Smith translated and published that book in 1830 and named it the ‘Book of Mormon’, in honor of the last Prophet who concluded that record circa 400 AD.

This book is the big-screen adaption of the first portion of the Book of Mormon. It features the Old Testament events and prophesies that portended the exodus to America, including the accounts of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and particularly Joseph who was sold into Egypt, which combine with scores of paintings and photographs to convince the world as to the wisdom, designs and the love of God.

Christ knew some would embrace the truth without hesitation and others would have doubt and even opposition. Hence, this book, in its simplest and most condensed form, which the Holy Ghost will bear witness of as to its veracity and also the reality of the organized church, which Jesus Christ also established to exalt mankind.

Life of Nephi【電子書籍】[ George Q. Cannon ]

This Zion's Camp Books special ebook edition has been formatted for ease of reading on Kobo, with internal links to scriptures cited and footnotes. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed putting it together.

George Q. Cannon's Original Preface

SOME years since the desire took possession of me to write the life of Nephi, the son of Lehi, and, as time and opportunity should permit, the lives of other prominent men of his race of whom we have an account in the Book of Mormon, so as to form a series of biographies for the perusal of the young.

The age in which we live is one of doubt and unbelief. Skepticism is spreading. All faith in divine things, as taught by the ancient servants of God, is being unsettled. Man's reason is being extolled as a higher standard than God's revelations. The personality of God, the origin of man and his fall, the atonement of the Savior the places of reward and punishment, known as heaven and hell, and the existence of a personal devil, are all questioned, and, by many members of religious sects denied. The Bible is no longer accepted as a reliable standard, only so far as its teachings may agree with the new and fashionable views entertained respecting religion and science.

Fortunately for us, we are in a position to stem and turn this tide of infidelity, so that it shall not overwhelm our young people. We are not dependent upon the Bible alone for our knowledge concerning these grand, cardinal truths over which the world is stumbling and debating. We have other recordsーamong the most important of which is the Book of Mormonーwhich corroborate and furnish ample proofs of their heavenly origin. We have the teachings and knowledge of men living in lands far apart and of races widely separated; and they agree in their testimonies, and sustain the divinity of the truths which are taught by the Son of God Himself, and by His inspired servants.

The Prophet Nephi, whose life we here present, was one of the greatest and most advanced of these teachers of heavenly truths. There have been but few men, so far as we know, who comprehended, and spoke, and wrote about them as plainly as did he. He had a personal knowledge of the doctrines, principles and facts respecting which men now dispute. He has written fully upon them. His testimony, therefore, is worth more to the world than any number of men's opinions and theories. And, best of all, it carries within itself the highest evidence of its truth. This is characteristic of his writings, and of all the writings in the Book of Mormon. To every humble, prayerful soul the perusal of that book is a solace. It produces peace and joy, and brings the clear conviction that it is God's word. No arguments are required to prove this. Men have assailed and denounced it; but the indisputable truth still remains that, when read with a meek spirit and a prayerful heart, the testimony of its divine origin descends like
refreshing dew from heaven, upon the reader, and he knows, by the Spirit and power of God, that it is His word.

That THE LIFE OF NEPHI may have the effect to increase faith, and stimulate inquiry and the more careful perusal of the divine records which the Lord has given to us, is the most earnest desire of THE AUTHOR

Second Witness: Analytical and Contextual Commentary on the Book of Mormon: Volume 1 - First Nephi【電子書籍】[ Brant A.
