Overconfidence and Risk Taking in Foreign Policy Decision Making The Case of Turkey’s Syria Policy【電子書籍】[ Imran Demir ]

This book introduces a new perspective on risk seeking behaviour, developing a framework based on various cognitive theories, and applying it to the specific case-study of Turkey’s foreign policy toward Syria. The author examines why policy makers commit themselves to polices that they do not have the capacity to deliver, and develops an alternative theoretical model to prospect theory in explaining risk taking behaviour based on the concept of overconfidence. The volume suggests that overconfident individuals exhibit risk seeking behaviour that contradicts the risk averse behaviour of individuals in the domain of gain, as predicted by prospect theory. Using a set of testable hypothesis deduced from the model, it presents an empirical investigation of the causes behind Turkish decision makers’ unprecedented level of risk taking toward the uprising in Syria and the consequences of this policy.

Supreme Hubris How Overconfidence Is Destroying the Courtーand How We Can Fix It【電子書籍】[ Aaron Tang ]

How to repair the dysfunction at the Supreme Court in a way that cuts across partisan ideologies

The Supreme Court, once the most respected institution in American government, is now routinely criticized for rendering decisions based on the individual justices’ partisan leanings rather than on a faithful reading of the law. For legal scholar Aaron Tang, however, partisanship is not the Court’s root problem. Overconfidence is.

Conservative and liberal justices alike have adopted a tone of uncompromising certainty in their ability to solve society’s problems with just the right lawyerly arguments. The result is a Court that lurches stridently from one case to the next, delegitimizing opposing views and undermining public confidence in itself.

To restore the Court’s legitimacy, Tang proposes a different approach to hard cases: one in which the Court acknowledges the arguments and interests on both sides and rules in the way that will do the least harm possible. Examining a surprising number of popular opinions where the Court has applied this approachーranging from LGBTQ rights to immigration to juvenile justiceーTang shows how the least harm principle can provide a promising and legally grounded framework for the difficult cases that divide our nation.

Courage over Confidence offers a new approach to conquering the mental game of sports. Written for competitive young athletes as well as professionals and Olympians, it is also a game changer for coaches and parents looking for ways to further help their aspiring athletes.

In this book, renowned clinical and sport psychologist Dr. Mitchell Greene explodes one of the field’s most common and malicious mythsーthat confidence is a prerequisite for athletic success. The evidence shows that most athletes find it nearly impossible to sustain positive thinking when their minds are riddled with mind chatterーthat unwelcome, doom and gloom self-conversation that crops up in high-stakes competitions. Chatter-filled athletes will excel in practice but struggle to perform on game day and they will fear the stakes of losing despite having trained to compete at their best.

The clear instructions in Courage over Confidence provide guidance for managing mind chatter and a method for “joining forces” with that negative voice rather than battling it. With courage over confidence, good players can learn to become great competitors.
