Master's Thesis from the year 2012 in the subject Business economics - Miscellaneous, grade: 1,3, University of Mannheim, course: Business economics, language: English, abstract: Based on data from German DAX-CEOs in this thesis it is argued, that in different fields of education individuals acquire different mind-sets which influence their proneness to overconfidence. Using the framework of dual process reasoning it is proposed that education in quantitative fields, such as mathematics or physics, hampers overconfidence while individuals educated in qualitative fields, such as law or the humanities, become more prone to overconfidence.

Overconfidence and Risk Taking in Foreign Policy Decision Making The Case of Turkey’s Syria Policy【電子書籍】[ Imran Demir ]

This book introduces a new perspective on risk seeking behaviour, developing a framework based on various cognitive theories, and applying it to the specific case-study of Turkey’s foreign policy toward Syria. The author examines why policy makers commit themselves to polices that they do not have the capacity to deliver, and develops an alternative theoretical model to prospect theory in explaining risk taking behaviour based on the concept of overconfidence. The volume suggests that overconfident individuals exhibit risk seeking behaviour that contradicts the risk averse behaviour of individuals in the domain of gain, as predicted by prospect theory. Using a set of testable hypothesis deduced from the model, it presents an empirical investigation of the causes behind Turkish decision makers’ unprecedented level of risk taking toward the uprising in Syria and the consequences of this policy.

Impact of overoptimism and overconfidence on economic behavior: Literature review, measurement methods and empirical evidence【電子書籍】[ Andreas M?ller ]

Diploma Thesis from the year 2007 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 1,3, Otto Beisheim School of Management Vallendar, 58 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: This paper aims to give an overview of two related human traits that have attracted particularly wide interest, namely overconfidence and overoptimism. The two are closely related to each other, and often used synonymously. Broadly speaking, overconfidence results in underestimation of future risks, e.g. the riskiness of future cash flows, whilst overoptimism leads to an overestimation of future positive outcomes, e.g. the future returns of a company. Besides, the paper wants to deduct suggestions for further research, by systematically identifying uncovered topics in existing literature. This paper also provides a closer look at the empirical methods normally applied in field studies. Although the phenomena are intuitively understandable, empirical researchstill presents itself as a mosaic of fragmented testing rather than a coherent framework. One may assume that this is mainly caused by the difficult measurability of overconfidence and overoptimism: On the one hand, the decision maker, convinced of his own rationality, contributes zero overconfidence or overoptimism to his actions. On the other hand, even a neutral observer cannot specify any degree of biasedness a priori, as stochastic outcomes per definition do not allow for perfect prediction. Therefore, scientists frequently rely on proxy variables that at least allow for measuring a group's average overoptimism or overconfidence. Furthermore, this paper empirically examines several considerations regarding existing research and measurement methods. It particularly aims to connect biasedness with certain personal and economic characteristics, namely participants' gender, industry affiliation, company life cycle, success and risk preferences. Additionally, different methods are employed for measuring overoptimism. By comparing the strength of bias indicated by each scaling, one gets interesting insights into the influence that question design has on test results.

Das Ph?nomen Overconfidence in Verhandlungs- und Entscheidungssituationen【電子書籍】[ Iris Kuckelberg ]

Supreme Hubris How Overconfidence Is Destroying the Courtーand How We Can Fix It【電子書籍】[ Aaron Tang ]

How to repair the dysfunction at the Supreme Court in a way that cuts across partisan ideologies

The Supreme Court, once the most respected institution in American government, is now routinely criticized for rendering decisions based on the individual justices’ partisan leanings rather than on a faithful reading of the law. For legal scholar Aaron Tang, however, partisanship is not the Court’s root problem. Overconfidence is.

Conservative and liberal justices alike have adopted a tone of uncompromising certainty in their ability to solve society’s problems with just the right lawyerly arguments. The result is a Court that lurches stridently from one case to the next, delegitimizing opposing views and undermining public confidence in itself.

To restore the Court’s legitimacy, Tang proposes a different approach to hard cases: one in which the Court acknowledges the arguments and interests on both sides and rules in the way that will do the least harm possible. Examining a surprising number of popular opinions where the Court has applied this approachーranging from LGBTQ rights to immigration to juvenile justiceーTang shows how the least harm principle can provide a promising and legally grounded framework for the difficult cases that divide our nation.

Ist Overconfidence bei Managern messbar?

Courage over Confidence Managing Mind Chatter and Winning the Mental Game【電子書籍】[ Mitchell Greene ]

Courage over Confidence offers a new approach to conquering the mental game of sports. Written for competitive young athletes as well as professionals and Olympians, it is also a game changer for coaches and parents looking for ways to further help their aspiring athletes.

In this book, renowned clinical and sport psychologist Dr. Mitchell Greene explodes one of the field's most common and malicious myths-that confidence is a prerequisite for athletic success. The evidence shows that most athletes find it nearly impossible to sustain positive thinking when their minds are riddled with mind chatter-that unwelcome, doom and gloom self-conversation that crops up in high-stakes competitions. Chatter-filled athletes will excel in practice but struggle to perform on game day and they will fear the stakes of losing despite having trained to compete at their best.

The clear instructions in Courage over Confidence provide guidance for managing mind chatter and a method for "joining forces" with that negative voice rather than battling it. With courage over confidence, good players can learn to become great competitors.
