The Cthulhu Mythos represent a gateway between the known universe and an ancient dimension of terror inhabited with unspeakable creatures, a pantheon of alien extra-dimensional deities and horrors which predate humanity, and which are hinted at in eons-old myths and legends. Lovecraft's materialist views led him to espouse his philosophical views through his fiction; these philosophical views came to be called cosmicism. Cosmicism took on a dark tone with his creation of what is today called the Cthulhu Mythos. The Whisperer in Darkness【電子書籍】[ H. P. Lovecraft ]

H. P. Lovecraft wrote the short story "The Whisperer in Darkness." It was written between February and September 1930 and first appeared in Weird Tales in August 1931. It is a horror/science fiction hybrid, similar to "The Color Out of Space" (1927). Despite numerous references to the Cthulhu Mythos, the supernatural does not play many roles in the plot and therefore reflects Lovecraft's transformation to a sci-fi writer. Mi-Go, an alien race, is also introduced in the story. Much to the chagrin of Albert N. Wilmarth, local academic, bizzare things are sighted floating in rivers in the area of rural Vermont after a flood which consequently resurfaces the debates regarding an old myth of hill-dwelling monsters that abducts humans. However, Wilmarth is drawn into a surprising correspondence that leads to a troubling discovery when he begins receiving letters from an individual named Henry Wentworth Akeley which talks about the alleged presence close to his farmhouse of an extraterrestrial race worshipping ancient cosmic deities. "The Haunter of the Dark," "At the Mountains of Madness," "The Burial Place," and "The Lurker at the Threshold" are among the volumes that contain Lovecraft's supernatural tales.

Howard Phillips Lovecraft known as H. P. Lovecraft ー was an American author of horror, fantasy and science fiction, especially the subgenre known as weird fiction.
Lovecraft's guiding aesthetic and philosophical principle was what he termed "cosmicism" or "cosmic horror", the idea that life is incomprehensible to human minds and that the universe is fundamentally inimical to the interests of humankind. As such, his stories express a profound indifference to human beliefs and affairs. Lovecraft is best known for his Cthulhu Mythos story cycle and the Necronomicon, a fictional grimoire of magical rites and forbidden lore.
Although Lovecraft's readership was limited during his lifetime, his reputation has grown over the decades, and he is now regarded as one of the most influential horror writers of the 20th century. According to Joyce Carol Oates, Lovecraftーas with Edgar Allan Poe in the 19th centuryーhas exerted "an incalculable influence on succeeding generations of writers of horror fiction". Stephen King called Lovecraft "the twentieth century's greatest practitioner of the classic horror tale."

CONTENTS
The Nameless City
The Festival
The Colour out of Space
The Call of Cthulhu
The Dunwich Horror
The Whisperer in Darkness
Dreams in the Witch-house
The Haunter of the Dark
The Shadow over Innsmouth
The Shadow out of Time
At the Mountain of Madness
The Case of Charles Dexter Ward
Azathoth 1922
Beyond the Wall of Sleep
Celephais
Cool Air
Dagon
Ex Oblivione
Facts Concerning the Late Arthur Jermyn and His Family
From Beyond
He 1925
Herbert West: Reanimator
Hypnos 1922
Imprisoned with the Pharaohs
In the Vault 1925
Medusa's Coil
Memory
Nyarlathotep 1920
Pickman's Model
Poetry of the Gods
The Alchemist
The Beast in the Cave
The Book
The Cats of Ulthar
The Crawling Chaos
The Descendant
The Doom That Came to Sarnath
The Dream Quest of Unknown Kadath
The Evil Clergyman
The Horror at Martin's Beach
The Horror at Red Hook
The Hound
The Lurking Fear
The Moon Bog
The Music of Erich Zann
The Other Gods
The Outsider 1921
The Picture in the House 1920
The Quest of Iranon 1921
The Rats in the Walls
The Shunned House 1924
The Silver Key
The Statement of Randolph Carter
The Strange High House in the Mist
The Street
The Temple
The Terrible Old Man
The Thing on the Doorstep
The Tomb
The Transition of Juan Romero
The Tree
The Unnamable
The White Ship
Through the Gates of the Silver Key
What the Moon Brings 1922
Polaris
The Very Old Folk

"The Whisperer in Darkness" is a story by H. P. Lovecraft. The story is told by Albert N. Wilmarth, an instructor of literature at Miskatonic University in Arkham. When local newspapers report strange things seen floating in rivers during a historic Vermont flood, Wilmarth becomes embroiled in a controversy about the reality and significance of the sightings, though he sides with the skeptics, blaming old legends about monsters living in uninhabited hills who abduct people who venture too close to their territory.

He receives a letter from one Henry Wentworth Akeley, a man who lives in an isolated farmhouse near Townshend, Vermont. He affirms that he has proof that will convince Wilmarth that he must stop focusing on the race's existence. The two exchange letters, including a record of the extraterrestrial race chanting with human agents, who worship several beings, including Cthulhu and Nyarlathotep, the latter of whom "shall put on the semblance of men, the waxen mask and the robe that hides".

The agents intercept Akeley's messages and harass his farmhouse nightly. Akeley and the agents exchange gunfire and many of Akeley's guard dogs are killed. Although Akeley expresses more in his letters, he abruptly has a change of heart. He writes that he has met with the extraterrestrial beings and has learned that they are peaceful. Furthermore, they have taught him of marvels beyond all imagination. He urges Wilmarth to pay him a visit and to bring along the letters and photographic evidence that he had sent him. Wilmarth reluctantly consents.

Wilmarth arrives to find Akeley in a pitiful physical condition, immobilized in a chair in darkness. Akeley tells Wilmarth about the extraterrestrial race and the wonders they have revealed to him. He also says that the beings can surgically extract a human brain and place it into a canister wherein it can live indefinitely and withstand the rigors of outer space travel and shows proof to Wilmarth. Akeley says he has agreed to undertake such a journey and points to a cylinder bearing his name. During this conversation, Wilmarth feels a vague sense of unease, especially from Akeley's odd manner of buzzing whispering.

During the night, a sleepless Wilmarth overhears a disturbing conversation with several voices, and a departing. When he investigates, he makes a horrifying discovery and escapes the farmhouse by stealing Akeley's car. When the authorities investigate the next day, they find nothing but a bullet-riddled house. Akeley has disappeared, along with all the physical evidence of the extraterrestrial presence. Wilmarth reveals the discovery that drove him out was a disembodied face and hands. We are led to conclude that it was not Akeley who had sat in the chair and conversed with him but one of the Mi-Go in disguise, as Akeley's brain was in the named cylinder.

The Whisperer in Darkness (Academic Edition) With Introduction, Author Bio, Study Guide & Chapter Quizzes【電子書籍】[ H. P. Lovecraft ]

An unspeakable horror lurks in the secluded hills of rural Vermont. After the historic floods of 1927, mixed in with news stories of human loss and suffering are multiple reports of weird, sponge-like life-forms floating in a local river. Albert Wilmarth, a literature professor and folklore expert, responds to the claims with a healthy dose of skepticism and chalks up the sightings to naive locals mistaking storm-battered human remains for imagined aliens washing down from the hills.

But Wilmarth agrees to take a closer look after he receives a letter from Henry Akeley, a reclusive academic who lives near the hills and claims to have proof of the aliens' existence. As the two men correspond, the tone becomes ominous when Akeley's letters are mysteriously intercepted, and unseen forces attack his farmhouse at night. After gunfire erupts and Akeley’s guard dogs are killed, he begins making plans to flee from his home.

Wilmarth is baffled by Akeley’s next letter, praising the aliens and calling them benevolent. He urges Wilmarth to take a train to his Vermont farm for a meeting and asks that he bring with him the letters, photos, and other evidence Akeley had sent to prove that aliens lurked in the hills.

Within hours of his arrival, Wilmarth becomes a terrified believer and flees the farmhouse in fear for his life. When he returns with the local sheriff, Akeley has vanished and so has the proof of the alien's existence.

This Academic Edition is designed for classroom use by English, literature, and writing students, as well as casual readers in search of a great story. It contains the full text of Lovecraft's classic, The Whisperer in Darkness, as well as an Editor's Foreword offering historical context on the book, an author bio, a study guide, and a full set of chapter-based quizzes.
"The Whisperer in Darkness" is a 26,000-word novella by H. P. Lovecraft. Written February?September 1930, it was first published in Weird Tales, August 1931. Similar to "The Colour Out of Space" (1927), it is a blend of horror and science fiction. Although it makes numerous references to the Cthulhu Mythos, the story is not a central part of the mythos, but reflects a shift in Lovecraft's writing at this time towards science fiction. The story also introduces the Mi-go, an extraterrestrial race of fungoid creatures.

Lovecraft's major inspiration and invention was cosmic horror: life is incomprehensible to human minds and the universe is fundamentally alien. Those who genuinely reason, like his protagonists, gamble with sanity. Lovecraft has developed a cult following for his Cthulhu Mythos, a series of loosely interconnected fictions featuring a pantheon of human-nullifying entities, as well as the Necronomicon, a fictional grimoire of magical rites and forbidden lore. His works were deeply pessimistic and cynical, challenging the values of the Enlightenment, Romanticism and Christianity. Lovecraft's protagonists usually achieve the mirror-opposite of traditional gnosis and mysticism by momentarily glimpsing the horror of ultimate reality.

The Whisperer in Darkness H.P. Lovecraft a la Carte No. 4【電子書籍】[ H. P. Lovecraft ]

If The Dunwitch Horror engendered any doubts about the trend of Lovecraft’s horror fiction into a less-supernatural, more-science-fictionish direction, The Whisperer in Darkness put them definitively to rest. This deeply unsettling narrative blurs the line between and among weird fiction, dark fantasy, and science fiction, and arguably makes better use of its scholarly-but-a-little-thick professorial narrator to evoke subtextual horror than any previous work.

By the time he was writing this story, Lovecraft was acutely aware that he and his primary literary outlet?ー?Weird Tales?ー?were not exactly a match made in Valhalla. They had different literary goals in mind when approaching any given story. Weird Tales liked fairly conventional shudder-pulp tales, especially ones that delivered a big finish; and Lovecraft had learned by experience that if he let his writing get too subtle and sophisticated, it would be shot right back to him with an apologetic note from Farnsworth Wright.

The Whisperer in Darkness may have been his attempt to bridge these two worlds. It features plenty of pulpy action, to the point of getting roundly criticized by some Lovecraft fans for borrowing too much from writers like Robert E. Howard. And it does have that oft-parodied “final crowning horror” line, the last piece of evidence withheld until the very last sentence that reveals The Horrid Truth; but it is voiced by Professor Wilmarth, and for a careful reader (who has figured out the truth already, long since), it functions not so much as a crowning horror, but as a line that rings true to a character who we know really isn’t as smart as he thinks he is.

When local newspapers report strange bodies seen floating in rivers during a historic Vermont flood, Wilmarth becomes embroiled in a controversy about the reality and significance of the sightings, though he sides with the skeptics. Wilmarth uncovers old legends about monsters living in the uninhabited hills who abduct people who venture or settle too close to their territory.

He receives a letter from one Henry Wentworth Akeley, a man who lives in an isolated farmhouse near Townshend, Vermont.
When the Whisperer speaks, the universe listens.

Growing up, Talia had never given much thought to the gray-robed Whisperers and their powers over reality. Their business was protecting the world; hers was hunting in the forest around her village and trying to stay out of trouble. Unfortunately for Tal, one Whisperer in particular becomes her business when she accidentally injures his companion, a talking cat-shaped creature named Morel.

As punishment, she becomes the Whisperer’s prisoner, whisked away to his island home for a year and a day of servitude. There is much to do ー for both the Whisperer and for Tal ー as he prepares for the ritual that must be completed every hundred years to ensure the safety of the world. Tal does as she is told; her priority is to simply finish out her sentence and return home to her family.

Yet there are many secrets on the island, many oddities, and they tug at Tal like an itch. As the year goes on, she learns more of the Whisperer, his duties, and the horrifying evils that he and the other Whisperers keep at bay. But secrets still remain: a room that is always locked, a stone monument in the woods, crimson flowers whose very name causes the Whisperer to storm away.

Unbeknownst to Tal, something is watching her, and what she does now may alter the fate of the world.
