Expos? of Polygamy A Lady's Life Among the Mormons【電子書籍】[ Fanny Stenhouse ]
|

After the 1872 publication of *Expos?,*Fanny Stenhouse became a celebrity in the cultural wars between Mormons and much of America. An English convert, she had grown disillusioned with the Mormon Church and polygamy, which her husband practiced before associating with a circle of dissident Utah intellectuals and merchants. Stenhouse’s critique of plural marriage, Brigham Young, and Mormonism was also a sympathetic look at Utah’s people and honest recounting of her life. She later created a new edition, titled "Tell It All," which ensured her notoriety in Utah and popularity elsewhere but turned her thoughtful memoir into a more polemical, true expos? of Polygamy. Since 1874, it has stayed in print, in multiple, varying editions. The original book, meanwhile, is less known, though more readable. Tracing the literary history of Stenhouse’s important piece of Americana, Linda DeSimone rescues an important autobiographical and historical record from the baggage notoriety brought to it.

In his seminal work, "Essay on Polygamy," Sereno Edwards Dwight delves into the multifaceted dimensions of polygamous relationships, examining their historical, moral, and social implications. New Religions and the Mediation of Non-Monogamy Polyamory, Polygamy, and Reality Television【電子書籍】[ Michelle Mueller ]
|

New Religions and the Mediation of Non-Monogamy examines the relationship between alternative American religions and the media representation of non-monogamies on reality-TV shows like Sister Wives, Seeking Sister Wife, and Polyamory: Married & Dating. The book is the first full-length study informed by fieldwork with Mormon polygamists and fieldwork with LGBTQ Neo-Pagan/Neo-Tantric polyamorists. The book tracks community members’ responses to the new media about them, their engagement with television and other media, and the likeness of representations to actual populations through fieldwork and interviews.

The book highlights differences in socioeconomic privileges that shape Mormon polygamists’ lives and LGBTQ polyamorists’ lives, respectively. The polyamory movement receives support from liberal media. As reality TV has shifted the image of Mormon polygamy to one of liberal American middle-class culture, Mormon polygamists have gained in public favor. The media landscape of non-monogamy is mediated by, in addition to these alternative religious populations, the norms and practices of the reality-TV industry and by sociocultural and economic realities, including race and class.

This book adds to the fields of media studies, critical race and gender studies, new religious movements, and queer studies.

Women, Islam and Everyday Life Renegotiating Polygamy in Indonesia【電子書籍】[ Nina Nurmila ]
|

This book examines Islam and women’s everyday life, focusing in particular on the highly controversial issue of polygamy. It discusses the competing interpretations of the Qur’anic verses that are at the heart of Muslim controversies over polygamy, with some groups believing that Islam enshrines polygamy as a male right, others seeing it as permitted but discouraged in favour of monogamy, and other groups arguing that Islam implicitly prohibits polygamy. Based on detailed fieldwork conducted in Indonesia, it provides an empirically-based account of women’s lived experiences in polygamous marriages, describing the different perceptions of the practice and strategies in dealing with it. It also considers the impact of changing public policy, in particular Indonesia’s 1974 Marriage Law which restricted the practice of polygamy. It shows that, in fact, this law has not resulted in widespread adherence, and considers how public policy could be modified to increase its effectiveness in affecting behaviour in everyday life. Overall, the book argues that polygamy has been a source of injustice towards women and children, that this is against Islamic teaching, and that a just Islamic law would need to call for the abolition of polygamy.

Richard Connell is happily married to his wife Kara in 1880 Utah Territory. Then his Mormon ecclesiastical leader calls him to take a second wife, completely scrambling his world. The shock is multiplied by the choice of who is to become that second wife in acceptance of Gods law. Further complicating his life is the assignment of U.S. Deputy Marshal William Baker Alden to enforce federal anti-polygamy laws by arresting and helping prosecute offenders. Aldens task is difficult as Mormons have created all sorts of defenses and diversions. Among Richards challenges: choose which law to obey, successfully court a second wife, keep household peace, hide one wife, avoid an apparently inevitable confrontation with federal law officials. An interesting, personal, historically accurate inside look at Mormon polygamy.

Modern Polygamy in the United States Historical, Cultural, and Legal Issues【
|

Few people realize that polygamy continues to exist in the United States. Thus, world-wide attention focused on the State of Texas in 2008 as agents surrounded the compound of The Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (FLDS) and took custody of more than 400 children. Several members of this schismatic religious group, whose women adorned themselves in “prairie dresses,” admitted to practicing polygamy. The state justified the raid on charges that underage marriage was being forced on young women. A year later, however, all but one of the children had been returned to their parents and only ten men were charged with crimes, some barely related to the original charges. This book reveals the history, culture, and sometimes an insider's look at the polygamous groups located primarily in the western parts of the United States. The contributors to this volume are historians, anthropologists, and sociologists familiar with the various groups. A legal scholar also addresses the legality of the Texas raid and a geneticist examines the paternity issues. Together, these authors provide a much needed understanding of the surprisingly large number of groups and individuals who live a quiet polygamous life style in the United States.

Power of Polygamy a/k/a/ Inside the World of Warren Jeffs Revised Edition【電子書籍】[ Dr. Carole A. Western ]
|

There are many Polygamist cults in North America with different doctrines, and only one overriding belief in common which is to marry very young girls to very old men and throw away the young men. Young men who are competing for wives of their own. Education is only to 6th grade and for girls it is optional. Depraved behavior, incest and suffering is a way of life, so is lack of food and housing. The States of Utah and Arizona pay about 18 million dollars a year to support the extra wives and children who are considered unmarried mothers and bastard children. Cruelty abounds and so does danger for anyone who speaks up about these groups. After the first edition of this book, Dr. Western had to sell her house and take out her home phone because of death threats. She bravely hid in the truck of a polygamist woman who was visiting her sister and recorded the lives of women which are both shocking and heart-breaking. This book is a must-read for anyone who really wants to know what goes on in cults in our nation.

Three souls for a heart. My polygamy【電子書籍】[ Guillermina Mekuy ]
|

This book tells us several stories, which have a real basis and are embedded in the determining elements of life: love, affection, the desire for liberation and change, acceptance, the struggle for life and the need to understand desire, sexuality… It seems a lot for a single book, but there are books capable of going beyond simple storytelling and contain a baggage of knowledge that helps us reflect. Three souls for a heart (My polygamy) is, therefore, a very important book that can also captivate us. And it does, not only for what it is said, but also for how the writer does it. For the original way of transferring the stories of his characters, his four main characters: Melba, Zulema, Aysha and Santiago Nv?, as well as a fifth character, the journalist Rita Maldonado, who is a transcript of the author herself and that carries the narrative thread of the book. A book that, in addition to discovering the world of polygamy, gets us excited. Is there anything more beautiful than emotion and thought blending together? Three souls for one heart does it for you. And it does it from a liberating point of view. Because every human being, and even more women these days, struggle to occupy their space; claiming their role in the world. “Is there a single type of love or several types? Is love a feeling or also a cultural element? I believe that love participates in both dimensions. And that is why it is so varied and we cannot generalize. That is why there are different forms of relationship and social organization of love relationships, depending on the cultures and the place in the world where they were born”. Three souls for a heart (My polygamy) is an exciting and peculiar story of three women and one man, different in their culture and education, but all with a common denominator: they want to understand, they want to love. And something that adds even more importance to the extraordinary literary and sociological value of this wonderful book: the real characters behind its pages have the courage to let us discover their experiences and thoughts so that we all learn to look deeply into tolerance in the back of our souls: That which all human beings who share the incredible adventure of living have.

Polygamy in Primetime Media, Gender, and Politics in Mormon Fundamentalism【電子書籍】[ Janet Bennion ]
|

Recently, polygamy has become a “primetime” phenomenon. Television shows like Big Love and Sister Wives demonstrate the “progressive” side of polygamy, while horror stories from victims of abusive marriages offer less upbeat experiences among the adherents of the fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (FLDS Church). Bennion, herself a product of Mormon polygamy, seeks to dispel the myths and misinformation that surround this topic. This study, based on seventeen years of ethnographic research among the Allred Group (Apostolic United Brethren) and on an analysis of recent blog journal entries written by a range of polygamous women, examines the variety and complexity of contemporary Mormon fundamentalist life in the Intermountain West. Although Bennion highlights problems associated with polygamy, including evidence that some forms are at high risk for father-child incest, she challenges the media-driven depiction of plural marriage as uniformly abusive and harmful to women. She shows how polygamist families can provide both economic security and social sustenance for some women, and how the authority of the husband can be undermined by the stresses of providing for multiple wives and children. Going beyond the media’s obsession with the sexual aspects of polygamous marriage, Bennion offers a rich description of familial, social, and legal contexts. Throughout, she makes the case for legalizing polygamy in order to allow greater visibility and regulation of the practice.

Revelation, Resistance, and Mormon Polygamy The Introduction and Implementation of the Principle, 1830?1853【電子書籍】[ Merina Smith ]
|

In Revelation, Resistance, and Mormon Polygamy historian Merina Smith explores the introduction of polygamy in Nauvoo, a development that unfolded amid scandal and resistance. Smith considers the ideological, historical, and even psychological elements of the process and captures the emotional and cultural detail of this exciting and volatile period in Mormon history. She illuminates the mystery of early adherents' acceptance of such a radical form of marriage in light of their dedication to the accepted monogamous marriage patterns of their day.

When Joseph Smith began to reveal and teach the doctrine of plural marriage in 1841, even stalwart members like Brigham Young were shocked and confused. In this thoughtful study, Smith argues that the secret introduction of plural marriage among the leadership coincided with an evolving public theology that provided a contextualizing religious narrative that persuaded believers to accept the principle.

This fresh interpretation draws from diaries, letters, newspapers, and other primary sources and is especially effective in its use of family narratives. It will be of great interest not only to scholars and the general public interested in Mormon history but in American history, religion, gender and sexuality, and the history of marriage and families.

Born in 1805 and silenced thirty-nine years later by assassins’ bullets, he dictated more than one-hundred revelations, published books of new scripture, built a temple, organized several new cities, and became the proclaimed prophet to tens of thousands during his abbreviated life.
Among his many novel teachings and practices, none is more controversial than plural marriage, a restoration of the Old Testament practice that he accepted as part of his divinely appointed mission. Joseph Smith taught his polygamy doctrines only in secret and dictated a revelation in July 1843 authorizing its practice (now LDS D&C 132) that was never published during his lifetime. Although rumors and expos?s multiplied, it was not until 1852 that Mormons in Brigham Young’s Utah took a public stand. By then, thousands of Mormons were engaged in the practice that was seen as essential to salvation.
Victorian America saw plural marriage as immoral and Joseph Smith as acting on libido. However, the private writings of Nauvoo participants and other polygamy insiders tell another, more complex and nuanced story. Many of these accounts have never been published. Others have been printed sporadically in unrelated publications. Drawing on every known historical account, whether by supporters or opponents, Volumes 1 and 2 take a fresh look at the chronology and development of Mormon polygamy, including the difficult conundrums of the Fannie Alger relationship, polyandry, the “angel with a sword” accounts, Emma Smith’s poignant response, and the possibility of Joseph Smith offspring by his plural wives. Among the most intriguing are the newly available Andrew Jenson papers containing not only the often-quoted statements by surviving plural wives but also Jenson’s own private research, conducted in the late nineteenth century.
Telling the story of Joseph Smith’s polygamy from the records of those who knew him best, augmented by those who observed him from a distance, may have produced the most useful view of all.

A Christian Defense Of Polygamy Through The Centuries【電子書籍】[ J.D. Langton ]

|

Households that include more than one wife have existed since the beginning of mankind, and until the rise of the Greco-Roman empire and the subsequent Catholic Church, nobody, not even Christians, questioned the legitimacy or normalcy of having more than one wife in a family. Despite the overwhelming presence of what we call "polygamy" in the Bible and God's direct endorsement of it, European Christians have argued the validity of this family structure for centuries. However, there have been well-known Christians throughout the centuries who have defended the Biblical nature of having more than one wife in a family.

This book is a compilation of the four most impactful and Biblical works on the subject throughout the last 5 centuries of Christian history. My hope is that it will serve as a helpful historical resource for those wishing to explore polygamy from a Biblical standpoint.

The authors of these compiled works, as well as the publisher of this volume, present their material from a Biblical Christian worldview, with no influence from the Mormon cult whatsoever.

Breaking Free How I Escaped Polygamy, the FLDS Cult, and My Father, Warren Jeffs【電子書籍】[ Rachel Jeffs ]

|

In this searing memoir of survival in the spirit of Stolen Innocence, the daughter of Warren Jeffs, the self-proclaimed Prophet of the FLDS Church, takes you deep inside the secretive polygamist Mormon fundamentalist cult run by her family and how she escaped it.

Born into the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Rachel Jeffs was raised in a strict patriarchal culture defined by subordinate sister wives and men they must obey. No one in this radical splinter sect of the Mormon Church was more powerful or terrifying than its leader Warren JeffsーRachel’s father.

Living outside mainstream Mormonism and federal law, Jeffs arranged marriages between under-age girls and middle-aged and elderly members of his congregation. In 2006, he gained international notoriety when the FBI placed him on its Ten Most Wanted List. Though he is serving a life sentence for child sexual assault, Jeffs’ iron grip on the church remains firm, and his edicts to his followers increasingly restrictive and bizarre.

In Breaking Free, Rachel blows the lid off this taciturn community made famous by Jon Krakauer’s bestselling Under the Banner of Heaven to offer a harrowing look at her life with Warren Jeffs, and the years of physical and emotional abuse she suffered. Sexually assaulted, compelled into an arranged polygamous marriage, locked away in "houses of hiding" as punishment for perceived transgressions, and physically separated from her children, Rachel, Jeffs’ first plural daughter by his second of more than fifty wives, eventually found the courage to leave the church in 2015. But Breaking Free is not only her storyーRachel’s experiences illuminate those of her family and the countless others who remain trapped in the strange world she left behind.

A shocking and mesmerizing memoir of faith, abuse, courage, and freedom, Breaking Free is an expose of religious extremism and a beacon of hope for anyone trying to overcome personal obstacles.

Sister Saints Mormon Women since the End of Polygamy【電子書籍】[ Colleen McDannell ]
|

The specter of polygamy haunts Mormonism. More than a century after the practice was banned, it casts a long shadow that obscures people's perceptions of the lives of today's Latter-day Saint women. Many still see them as second-class citizens, oppressed by the church and their husbands, and forced to stay home and take care of their many children. Sister Saints offers a history of modern Mormon women that takes aim at these stereotypes, showing that their stories are much more complex than previously thought. Women in the Utah territory received the right to vote in 1870-fifty years before the nineteenth amendment-only to have it taken away by the same federal legislation that forced the end of polygamy. Progressive and politically active, Mormon women had a profound impact on public life in the first few decades of the twentieth century. They then turned inward, creating a domestic ideal that shaped Mormon culture for generations. The women's movement of the 1970s sparked a new, vigorous-and hotly contested-Mormon feminism that divided Latter-day Saint women. By the twenty-first century more than half of all Mormons lived outside the United States, and what had once been a small community of pioneer women had grown into a diverse global sisterhood. Colleen McDannell argues that we are on the verge of an era in which women are likely to play a greater role in the Mormon church. Well-educated, outspoken, and deeply committed to their faith, these women are defying labels like liberal and conservative, traditional and modern. This deeply researched and eye-opening book ranges over more than a century of history to tell the stories of extraordinary-and ordinary-Latter-day Saint women with empathy and narrative flair.

My Mormon Life; A Boy's Struggle With Polygamy, Magic Underwear, and Racism【電子書籍】[ James Sanbourne ]
|

In a deep torch lit cavern, beneath the Mormon temple, hundreds of barefoot, white clad youths wait in line to be plunged beneath the water in a bronze tank that rests on the backs of twelve gigantic bronze oxen. Each time they are lowered backwards into the water, a member of the Mormon priesthood evokes the name of a person who is dead.

My Mormon Life is the story of a boy, raised in the Mormon faith, who examines the beliefs of the church and comes to realize that what he is being taught by the church is not consistent with what seems to be the real world. In this process he takes the reader on the grand tour of Mormon beliefs, from baptism of the dead, to polygamy and Mormon underwear, survival food, and the separate policy toward Blacks. One by one the unique beliefs of Mormons are explored by the boy's active mind, often leading to humorous conclusions. By following these explorations the reader will find the answers they are seeking about the Mormon Church and by the end of this story understand what it means to be a Mormon.

Ultimately the Mormon faith does not hold up to the scrutiny of this young boy's mind and this leads to powerful questions about the whole process of forcing fanatical religious beliefs on the mind of a child.

The Mormons have been the focus of curiosity from the very beginning, and for some good reasons. They claim to have a living prophet who speaks directly with God, they teach that only Mormons can go to the Mormon heaven. They have practiced polygamy in the past, but now condemn it in this lifeーstill believing there will be multiple wives in Mormon heaven. They believe that the very best of the Mormons will become gods.

My Mormon Life is a journey through this unique world. It answers the question: What is Mormonism?

From Same-Sex Marriage to Polygamy & Prostitution (An Anthology of Disillusionment on the 21 Century Moral Code) Personal Reflection Essay【電子書籍】[ Professor Leb Morr ]
|

This is a personal reflection essay. An essay like a book may be on the same topic, but in breadth and details, it tries to embrace the subject without expounding on details as may be treated in a book; and being a personal reflection, the authors mind is the readers road map. The essays focal point is, if same-sex marriage has been given constitutional recognition in the United States, should this not logically lead to recognizing prostitution and the next complexity of pair bondingpolygamy? The essay examines the human rights and freedom of choice factors behind this and uses internationally recognized scenarios to illustrate the harmlessness of the latter two. To illustrate these points, practices of countries seen as the doctrinal peers of the United States are referenced and compared to the United States. Personal names are mentioned not as an attempt to denigrate any individual but rather as need for illustrative examples.

The Blood in Their Veins The Kimballs, Polygamy, and the Shaping of Mormonism【電子書籍】[ Andrew Kimball ]
|

This meticulously documented, deeply engaging book represents a unique approach to Utah and Latter-day Saint history, drawing on previously untapped private letters and diaries of members of the large and widely known polygamist family of the prominent Latter-day Saint leader, Heber C. Kimball.

The story includes compelling accounts of Helen Kimball Whitney, who married Joseph Smith polygamously at fourteen and became, according to Emmeline B. Wells, “one of the best known and most estimable women of the Church,” and of her son Orson F. Whitney, who forswore his embrace of reincarnation only six years before his call as an apostle of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Another daughter, Alice Kimball Smith, married a man who was tracked to a brothel and arrested for armed robbery and assault in 1883, after which Alice turned to family friend and apostle Joseph F. Smith and became his fifth wife. Heber’s son, J. Golden Kimball, one of the most beloved and colorful personalities in Mormon and Utah history, is brought to life in another sketch. The Kimballs had to navigate the ticklish business of explaining or obfuscating polygamy to disapproving family in the East, including the extended claim by Heber’s wife Christeen to her New Jersey family that she had married a Mr. Chase monogamously. Two of Heber’s sons, both stake presidents, contemplated plural marriage in the first decade of the twentieth century, well after the church publicly disavowed the practice.

Additional light is shone on the now-defunct Latter-day Saint practices of adult adoptions and speaking in tongues, Mormon-settler relations with the Utes and Pahvants, the 1856 handcart rescue, the John Hyrum Koyle “Dream Mine,” the Jackson County, Missouri, Temple Lot suit of 1892, and federal pursuit of polygamists.
