Address To the Christian Nobility of the German Nation Treatise on Signature Doctrines of the Priesthood【電子書籍】[ Martin Luther ]

Address to the Christian Nobility of the German Nation is one of the tracts written by Martin Luther in 1520. In this work, he defined for the first time the signature doctrines of the priesthood of all believers and the two kingdoms. After the church made a strong attempt at drawing distinct lines on saying who had authority in the spiritual sphere and its matters. This division of Christians into spheres motivated Luther to write on the "three walls" the "Romanists" created to protect themselves from reform: "Spiritual Power over Temporal" ? The first wall of the "Romanists" that Luther criticized was that of the division of the spiritual and temporal state. "Authority to Interpret Scripture" ? In the second part of the letter to the Christian nobility of the German nation, Luther debates the point that it is the Pope's sole authority to interpret, or confirm interpretation of, scriptures "Authority to Call a Council" ? The final part to Luther's letter is the largest demonstration of his desire to see authority in control over the spiritual sphere shift to the temporal sphere.

Holy Brothers Geography, Kinship, and Priesthood in Ancient Israel【電子書籍】[ Matthew R. Rasure ]

The history of the Israelite priesthood in the early first millennium BCE is shrouded in mystery. While images of priests, prayer, and sacrifice play a significant role in all biblical periods, reconstructing the practices and organization of the early priesthood is beset by a host of historical, chronological, and methodological problems. In 1973, Frank Moore Cross published a landmark proposal tying the history of the priesthood to the character of Moses and the establishment of the United Monarchyーthe so-called “Mushite Hypothesis”ーproviding a historical foothold for the study of each. Building on the work of Cross, Matthew R. Rasure investigates traces of the early priesthood through narrative analysis of geography, kinship, and the memory of the characters of Moses and Aaron. Rasure posits the existence of two spectra on which different biblical voices may be positioned: a polarity between geographical center and periphery, and a polarity concerning understandings of Aaron and Moses. What emerges from these oppositions is a picture of two priestly identities active in distinct regions. The interactions between these priesthoods shape the history, politics, and cult of the United Monarchy, the Divided Monarchy, and beyond.

No More the Canaanite Perspectives of an African American Mormon on Race and the Priesthood【電子書籍】[ Robert L. Stevenson ]

This book effectively dissects, exposes, explains and corrects most if not all of the misconceptions, speculations, misinterpreted scriptures, myths and shrouding that made the ban on Negroes receiving the priesthood scripturally justified, spiritually acceptable and socially tolerable, without question, for so long. This book is not the official answer or explanation of why the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in 1852 deemed it necessary to ban Negroes from the priesthood. It is also not intended, in any way, to criticize the church or the need for the ban as it is outlined in “Race and the Priesthood”. In fact, the bottom line conclusion of this book is that the ban on Negroes receiving the priesthood in 1852 had to be put in place to make it possible for the newly restored Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints to survive and thrive in the racially divided environment that existed in America at that time.

Power from on High The Development of Mormon Priesthood【電子書籍】[ Gregory A. Prince ]

Authority and priesthood were concepts that developed gradually in Mormon theology, not as thunderbolts but as ideas that acquired meaning and momentum over time. Acting initially on the basis of implied leadership, Joseph Smith moved toward explicit angelic authority and an increasingly defined structure drawn from biblical models.

All the while the structure of higher and lower priesthoods fluctuated in response to pragmatic needs. Priests were needed to perform ordinances, teachers to lead congregations, bishops to manage church assets, and elders to proselytize?responsibilities which would be redistributed repeatedly throughout Smith’s fourteen-year ministry.

Gregory Prince charts these developments with impressive interpretative skill. Besides the obvious historical significance, he underscores the implications for current Mormon governance. For instance, where innovations have characterized the past, one need not be bound by custom or surprised when church leaders instigate change.

Royal Messianism and the Jerusalem Priesthood in the Gospel of Mark【電子書籍】[ Dr. Bernardo Cho ]

Bernardo K. Cho investigates how Jewish messianism from the mid-second century BCE to the late first-century CE envisaged the proper relation between the Israelite king and the Jerusalem priests in the ideal future, and then proceeds to describe how the Gospel of Mark addresses this issue in depicting Jesus.

Cho responds to claims that the Markan Jesus regards the kingdom of God as fundamentally opposed to the ancient Levitical system, and argues that, just as with most of its related Jewish literature, the earliest Gospel assumes the expectation that the royal messiah would bring the Jerusalem institution to its eschatological climax. But Mark also depicts Jesus's stance towards the priests in terms of a call to allegiance and warning of judgement. Cho concludes that the Markan Jesus anticipates the destruction of the Jerusalem temple because the priests have rejected Israel's end-time ruler and thus placed themselves outside the messianic kingdom.

Stay Thou Nearby Reflections on the 1978 Revelation on the Priesthood【電子書籍】[ Tracey Y. Browning ]

In the gospel and in life, our individual journeys of exploring our past while moving forward into the future with faith are highly varied. We all have unique stories, and it is only through sharing them that we are able to wholly “bear one another’s burdens, that they may be light; . . . [and] mourn with those that mourn; yea, and comfort those that stand in need of comfort” (Mosiah 18:8-9). If we are to embrace and give life to our covenants, truly becoming God’s people, we must begin by listening to and embracing our brothers and sisters.

This collection of essays from Black leaders in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints shares reflections, insights, and experiences regarding the priesthood and temple restriction and the 1978 revelation that ended it. The contributors to this volume offer four invaluable perspectives in coming to understand identity and faith in the context of a Church that once prohibited Black members from fully accessing the Lord’s promised blessings. Their wisdom and experiences can provide inspiration, encouragement, and validation to others. At the heart of so many cries to the Lord for understanding and faith, we find the same yearning: “Stay Thou nearby.” Regardless of your particular struggles and sorrows, a healing balm is found in our Savior Jesus Christ. As we draw together in unity and love with one another, we draw unto Him.

On the Priesthood Classic and Contemporary Texts【

Controversy about the Catholic priesthood is nothing new. Just like laity, priests (including bishops and popes) have always been sinners. Some priests, like some laity, have caused grave scandal throughout the 2000-year history of the Church. Two questions arise from this reality. Why did Jesus Christ establish a ministerial priesthood for his Church, if the priesthood would sometimes cause scandalーwhat did he intend for the priesthood? Second, what has the Catholic Church in past times done about scandal in the priesthoodーhow has the Church corrected its priests and encouraged priests to lead lives of holiness? Amidst the noisy din of talking heads and self-proclaimed experts, this book offers solid warnings and directions about the priesthood from 15 saints of the past two millennia. On the Priesthood serves as a readable guide for priests, seminarians, and educated readers seeking to learn more about the simultaneous unworthiness and dignity of the priesthood. Always challenging and penetrating, the selections unite around one key point; the need for holiness.

Luther's Revolution The Political Dimensions of Martin Luther's Universal Priesthood【電子書籍】[ Nathan Montover ]

Luther's universal priesthood is, in part, a political doctrine that constitutes a revolutionary strain in Luther's thinking--a strain that can only be described as radical. Luther's political understanding of the universal priesthood posed a challenge to the concrete structures of his day, which were built upon a cosmological foundation that came under attack as a result of the Protestant Reformation. Thus, Luther's universal priesthood was not simply another evangelical concept that dealt with the office of ministry. It also served as the means for reordering the concept of temporal authority and the temporal order. Understood in this way, the universal priesthood had a political dimension that must be acknowledged if it is to be fully understood.

Clericalism The Death of Priesthood【電子書籍】[ George B. Wilson SJ ]

Searching for answers in the midst of the sexual abuse crisis in the church, many blamed the clerical culture. But what exactly is this clerical culture? We may know it when we see it, but how can we 'whether clergy or laypeople 'go about dismantling it and putting in place a new, healthy culture? George Wilson has spent decades working with organizations to help them discover, and often recover, their foundational calling. He is also a Jesuit priest engaged in the lives of congregations. In Clericalism: The Death of Priesthood he brings together both capacities and gives his sense of the challenges facing the church.

As members of the church, Wilson maintains, we are all responsible for creating a clerical culture. And we are also responsible for that culture's transformation. Clericalism aids this transformation by helping us examine some underlying attitudes that create and preserve destructive relationships between ordained and laity. After looking at the crisis and establishing where we are now, this book challenges us with concrete suggestions for changing behaviors. We are lay and ordained, but all baptized into the royal priesthood of 1 Peter 2:9, all called to spread the Gospel and do the work of God's love in the world. Ultimately, this is a hopeful book, looking for the restoration of a genuine priesthood, free of clericalism, in which we become truly united in Christ..

My Fellow Servants: Essays on the History of the Priesthood【電子書籍】[ William G. Hartley ]

The restoration of priesthood authority was a key event in the organization of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by Joseph Smith in 1830, as is well known. Much less familiar is the fascinating process of continuing revelation and administrative brilliance that has unfolded over the last two centuries as priesthood offices and quorums have gone into action. This book makes available William G. Hartley’s lifetime of research about that powerful story.

Interesting questions include: How were local congregations organized before there were wards and ward bishops? Do bishopric counselors need to be high priests? When did leaders begin to expect all boys to receive the Aaronic priesthood at age 12 in preparation for becoming elders? What is a quorum? Who defines the work of an elders quorum? What is the relationship between the Presiding Bishop and Aaronic Priesthood quorums? When and why did the Seventies become General Authorities? X-Ray of the Priest In a Field Hospital Reflections on the Sacred Priesthood【電子書籍】[ Armand de Malleray ]

From the Preface:

"To our lay brothers and sisters we also dedicate this book, to help them better understand, value and support their dear priests, the wounded and the beaming ones alike. In particular, we hope that seminarians and young men still discerning their calling might draw inspiration from this short presentation.

We beg for the leniency of the informed reader towards what is not a systematic treatise. Concision led us to reserve for a separate publication the essential topic of The Blessed Virgin Mary and the Priest - although Our Immaculate Lady is referred to in various chapters. Similarly, a thorough assessment of the importance of the Sacred Liturgy in the life and ministry of priests will have to be addressed separately, God willing.

Chapter One is The Fourteen Stations of Priestly Apostasy. The slow demise of a fictional priest, after a recent film, is the occasion of detailing various precautions and securities which we priests would do well to apply. In Chapter Two, Ordained a Priest in Dachau, the beautiful figure of Blessed Karl Leisner proves that Christ can make priests strive in the worst possible surrounding. In a way, this is the dynamic antidote to the fateful failure assessed in Chapter One. Chapter Three is about Handling the Right Body. It explores the deep sacramental motive for priestly celibacy and for the manly fulfilment of the priest in his identification to Christ and his service to the Church. In Persona Christi is our longest chapter (Chapter Four). It provides various angles to 'unpack' the well-known expression according to which priests act 'in the Person of Christ'. Chapter Five, Unfolding the Holy Shroud, refers to the relic of Our Lord's Shroud to illustrate the priestly mission to teach revealed truth in fidelity and persuasiveness. In Chapter Six, we examine Priestly Unity and Concelebration. Our non-polemical approach exhorts us priests to identify always more precisely what we really mean to do and achieve at Holy Mass. Building the Bride is our Chapter Seven. With recourse to exegesis, it shows the correspondence between the shaping of Eve and of the Church. Christ the Bridegroom empowers his priests to fulfil this spousal design. Our eighth and last chapter: Consecrated to God, Body and Soul, sets the priesthood within the broader calling to consecrated life, including the religious one. It opens up the reflection and invites young readers in particular to enter the lists with confidence.

We thank you for your interest, reader friend, and we commit this slender opus to our glorious models St John Vianney, St Padre Pio, St John Fisher, St John Henry Newman and all our heavenly intercessors, that it might please Our Lord and Our Lady, and might foster, however modestly, priestly sanctification."

The celebration of the Holy Eucharist and the development of the Eucharistic adoration in the Catholic Church are explored to harvest the rich insights and contributions of the saints, sacred theologians of the Church, the Popes and a host of others including the laity ad the clergy through their sacred writings and exemplary pious devotions to the Blessed Sacrament. 2. The Holy Eucharist is God in our midst. This book relates a number of miracles that individuals have received directly from the Eucharistic Lord by visiting the Blessed Sacrament or by participating in the Eucharistic adoration. 3. The Holy Eucharist is a healing tool par excellence in the ministry of a Catholic priest. How the priest can deploy its healing resources in his daily ministrations to those who approach him with all kinds of problems, is fully explored in this book. The implications of what it means for the priest to engage himself and Gods people with visit to the Blessed Sacrament are fully developed in this publication. 4. How can a Catholic priest access the healing resources in the Holy Eucharist and employ those healing resources in the healing of those who approach him with all kinds of life issues and problems which could be spiritual, moral, social, physical, material, mental, psychological, etc? That is part of what this book is all about. What constitute the abuses of the Holy Eucharist? Could we still receive favors from the Eucharistic Jesus when we knowingly abuse the Holy Eucharist? In what ways do we abuse the Holy Eucharist thereby insulting the Eucharistic Jesus without knowing? These issues are dealt with in this book where the author identified and discussed some of the abuses of the Holy Eucharist. This book, therefore, is about how to visit the Blessed Sacrament and receive favors from the Eucharistic Lord and how to avoid abusing the Holy Eucharist. 5. The Real Presence: Fact or FancyWhat Lies Concealed in the Sacred Host? Some classical Eucharistic miracles which took place through the centuries especially in the 20th, 13th and 9th centuries are narrated in this book to help unravel the hidden divinity in the Sacred Host after consecration.

Evolving Visions Of The Priesthood Changes from Vatican II to the Turn of the New Century【電子書籍】[ Dean R. Hoge ]

Evolving Visions of the Priesthood traces the movement of the Church in the United States during the first forty years of the implementation of Vatican II. This research gives the U.S. Church a good picture of itself and its struggles during the post-conciliar period. These studies are important for what they tell us of priests who were already ministering the theology of the Council, at the time of the Council, and also consider those priests ordained more recently and their perspectives on Vatican II. How the different groups of priests perceive each other in their respective desires to be faithful to God offers the reader insight into today's presbyterate. By following what has been happening we get a glimpse of what the future holds. Given the struggles of the scandals recently confronting the Church, the studies also offer indications of why the particular problems arose so suddenly and why they were so related to a given time frame.

Chapters are The American Priesthood After the 1960s," *Characteristics of Priests in 2001, - *The Shifting Emphasis in Ecclesiology, - *The New Priests, - *Issues and Needs Felt by Priests, - *The Question of Homosexual Subcultures, - *Understanding the Changes, - and *Recommendations Made by the Priests. - Includes an epilogue, *Effects of the 2002 Sexual Misconduct Crisis. -

Dean R. Revelations on the Priesthood【電子書籍】[ Various authors ]

In the April 1937 general conference, President David O. McKay, Second Counselor in the First Presidency, asked the following question, “If at this moment each one [of you] were asked to state in one sentence . . . the most distinguishing feature of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, what would be your answer?” He then said: “My answer would be . . . divine authority by direct revelation.” Priesthood authority revealed from heaven is the foundation upon which the Church is built.

This collection of writings explores the revelatory nature of authority in the Church, beginning with the restoration of priesthood authority and keys through the ministering of angels and including the 1978 revelation on priesthood. William G. Hartley presents a history of how the priesthood developed from a simple seed planted in 1829 to a fairly complex tree by the time of Joseph Smith’s death in 1844. The unfolding of priesthood restoration produced two major branches, several offices, an organizational hierarchy, and specific instructions on the proper use of priesthood authority. Brian Q. Cannon and the BYU Studies staff then present seventy contemporaneous documents about the restoration of the priesthood.

The middle portion of the book addresses the 1978 revelation on priesthood in great detail. Ronald K. Esplin gives circumstantial historical evidence that the priesthood denial to members of black African descent did not originate with Brigham Young, but likely had its roots in Nauvoo prior to Joseph Smith’s death. Edward L. Kimball presents a fascinating history of the revelation received by his father, President Spencer W. Kimball, and the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, which made priesthood blessings available to all worthy male members of the Church. Kimball’s account traces the roots of the priesthood ban, examines doctrinal implications of the policy, suggests various influences that impelled his father to make this a matter of long study and prayer, presents a marvelous narrative of the revelation itself, and, finally, describes the aftermath of the revelation. Marcus H. Martins, Emmanuel Abu Kissi, and Tessa Meyer Santiago offer perspectives on how the 1978 revelation affected Church members in Brazil, Africa, and South Africa.

Finally, as extra content, reviews of seven books give a glimpse of issues related to the 1978 priesthood revelation: race and slavery in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam; Mormon conceptions of race and lineage; social and historical origins of the Church’s pre-1978 priesthood policy; the first official LDS missionaries in Africa; and the personal experiences of Church members with black African ancestry.

The Act of Priesthood A wake up call for Revival【電子書籍】[ Joshua Gbaryea ]

In In this book, Pastor Joshua Gbaryea elaborated on "The Significant of Priesthood". Priesthood has been the most neglected central teaching in the twenty first Century Church. It is one thing to say that we are a “chosen race,” a “holy nation,” a “royal priesthood,” and an “ambassador of Christ.” Yet it is another thing altogether to have our identities shaped by these truths so that we act accordingly. If we recover the notion of the “priesthood of all believers” we will pray more boldly, offer up spiritual sacrifices regularly, and realize our unique privilege in Christ. If we recover our identities as full-time followers of Christ, regardless of where we work, we will be willing to prophetically confront the problems in the Church and in the world. Can we see our work in the world as a priestly act, as part of a royal priesthood? Can Christians use their professions to serve those around them? The notion that all believers are priests can revolutionize the Christian’s work in the Church and in the world, encouraging believers to serve the Lord in whatever capacity or profession they find themselves. With this ministry-oriented mindset toward all areas of life, God’s followers can come boldly into his presence, praying for fruitfulness in their own professions, being prophetic about things they see that are unjust, and acting as agents of reconciliation in their offices, schools, and community. With all this being said, I want to encourage every believer of Jesus Christ to get a copy of this book. get it as a gift for your love-ones, and share with others. God Bless, as you act in obedience.

Woman, Women, and the Priesthood in the Trinitarian Theology of Elisabeth Behr-Sigel【電子書籍】[ Rev Dr Sarah Hinlicky Wilson ]

Elisabeth Behr-Sigel (1907-2005), a convert to Orthodoxy in her early twenties and a central figure of Orthodox theology among Russian ?migr?s in Paris, first began to reflect on the question of women in the priesthood in 1976. Initially supporting the general consensus that priesthood would be impossible for the Orthodox, she came to retract this view, finding a basis for female ordination in women's distinct spiritual charisms. Behr-Sigel later shifted the foundation of her case to personhood, inspired by the work of fellow Orthodox theologian Vladimir Lossky, and arrived at the conclusion that all the Orthodox arguments against the ordination of women were, in fact, heretical at root.

In this volume, Wilson analyzes all of Behr-Sigel's writings about women and the priesthood across the whole sweep of her career, demonstrating the development of her thought on women over the last thirty years of her life. She evaluates her relationship to feminism, Protestantism and movements within Orthodoxy, finally drawing conclusions about this much-contested matter for the ongoing debate in both the East and the West.

The High Priesthood of Being Gay【電子書籍】[ James Hagerty ]

The High Priesthood of Being gay is a labor of love over 12 years in the writing. It included numerous, often exhausting, edits for accuracy and truthfulness. Its a bold attempt to separate out Being and Nothingness in what it is to be gay. Both sacred and profane, emotional and intellectual, it will expand the readers thought processes and I hope ennoble him at the same time. Thats by showing the latent high priest deeply enshrined within.
