The Holy Bible Douay-Rheims Version - The Old and New Testaments, With Additions & Annotations (Challoner Revision)【電子書籍】[ Various Authors ]

The Douay?Rheims Bible is a translation of the Bible from the Latin Vulgate into English made by members of the English College, Douai, in the service of the Catholic Church. The New Testament portion was published in Reims, France, with extensive commentary and notes, while The Old Testament portion was published by the University of Douai. Marginal notes take up the bulk of the volume and have a strong polemical and patristic character. They offered insights on issues of translation, and on the Hebrew and Greek source texts of the Vulgate. The purpose of the version, both the text and notes, was to uphold Catholic tradition in the face of the Protestant Reformation which up until the time of its publication had dominated Elizabethan religion and academic debate. As such it was an effort by English Catholics to support the Counter-Reformation.

The Bible Douay-Rheims Book 51: Acts【電子書籍】[ Douay-Rheims ]

The book begins with Jesus' final instructions to His disciples before His ascension, including the promise of the Holy Spirit. Soon after, on the day of Pentecost, the Holy Spirit descends upon the Apostles, empowering them to speak in different languages and boldly proclaim the Gospel. This marks the birth of the Church, and Peter delivers a sermon that leads to the conversion of 3,000 people, symbolizing the beginning of the Christian mission. The first part of Acts focuses on Peter’s leadership and the establishment of the Church in Jerusalem. It describes the community of believers living in unity, sharing possessions, and performing miracles. The Apostles face opposition from Jewish authorities, leading to persecution, but the Church continues to grow. One of the pivotal moments is the conversion of Saul (later known as Paul), a former persecutor of Christians, who becomes one of the most zealous apostles, spreading the Gospel across the Roman Empire.

In 1568 English exiles, many from Oxford, established the English College of Douay (Douai/Doway), Flanders, under William (later Cardinal) Allen. In October, 1578, Gregory Martin began the work of preparing an English translation of the Bible for Catholic readers, the first such translation into Modern English. Assisting were William Allen, Richard Bristow, Thomas Worthington, and William Reynolds who revised, criticized, and corrected Dr. Martin's work. The college published the New Testament at Rheims (Reims/Rhemes), France, in 1582 through John Fogny with a preface and explanatory notes, authored chiefly by Bristol, Allen, and Worthington. Later the Old Testament was published at Douay in two parts (1609 and 1610) by Laurence Kellam through the efforts of Dr. Worthington, then superior of the seminary. The translation had been prepared before the appearance of the New Testament, but the publication was delayed due to financial difficulties. The religious and scholarly adherence to the Latin Vulgate text led to the less elegant and idiomatic words and phrases often found in the translation. In some instances where no English word conveyed the full meaning of the Latin, a Latin word was Anglicized and its meaning defined in a glossary. Although ridiculed by critics, many of these words later found common usage in the English language. Spellings of proper names and the numbering of the Psalms are adopted from the Latin Vulgate.
In 1749 Dr. Richard Challoner began a major revision of the Douay and Rheims texts, the spellings and phrasing of which had become increasingly archaic in the almost two centuries since the translations were first produced. He modernized the diction and introduced a more fluid style, while faithfully maintaining the accuracy of Dr. Martin's texts. This revision became the 'de facto' standard text for English speaking Catholics until the twentieth century. It is still highly regarded by many for its style, although it is now rarely used for liturgical purposes. The notes included in this electronic edition are generally attributed to Bishop Challoner.

The Old Testament volumes were reprinted in 1635 but neither thereafter for another hundred years. In 1589, William Fulke collated the complete Rheims text and notes in parallel columns with those of the Bishops' Bible. This work sold widely in England, being re-issued in three further editions to 1633. It was predominantly through Fulke's editions that the Rheims New Testament came to exercise a significant influence on the development of 17th century English.

The narrative begins with the birth of Samuel, a prophet and judge, who is dedicated to God by his mother, Hannah. Samuel plays a crucial role as a leader and spiritual guide for the Israelites during a time of crisis, particularly as they face threats from the Philistines. The people, desiring a king to lead them like other nations, pressure Samuel to anoint Saul as the first king of Israel. Saul initially demonstrates promise as a military leader, but his reign soon becomes marked by disobedience to God’s commands. As the story unfolds, God rejects Saul due to his failures, leading to the anointing of David as his successor. The book details the complex relationship between Saul and David, including Saul's growing jealousy and attempts to kill David. Key episodes such as David's defeat of Goliath and his friendship with Jonathan, Saul's son, illustrate David's rise to prominence. 1 Kings explores themes of leadership, divine authority, and the consequences of disobedience, setting the stage for the eventual establishment of David’s kingship and the unfolding of Israel’s history.

As the city faces starvation and despair, Judith, a beautiful widow known for her piety and wisdom, devises a bold plan to save her people. She adorns herself and goes to the Assyrian camp, presenting herself to Holofernes, the general leading the siege. She beheads him in his tent, effectively crippling the Assyrian forces. Judith returns to Bethulia, where she presents Holofernes’s head to the elders, inspiring her people to attack the now-disoriented Assyrians. The Israelites achieve a great victory, and Judith is celebrated as a national heroine.Judith serves not only as a story of personal valor but also as a testament to faith, courage, and the power of God working through unexpected means. The book emphasizes themes of divine intervention and the importance of trusting in God’s plan, reinforcing the idea that even in the darkest times, hope and deliverance can come through faithful individuals. The Douay-Rheims Bible: Catholic translation of the Bible, Illustrated by Gustave Dore【電子書籍】[ Anonymous ]

With 97 illustrations by Gustave Dore. According to Wikipedia: "The Douay-Rheims Bible, also known as the Rheims-Douai Bible or Douai Bible and abbreviated as D-R, is a translation of the Bible from the Latin Vulgate into English. The New Testament was published in one volume with extensive commentary and notes in 1582. The Old Testament followed in 160910 in two volumes, also extensively annotated. The notes took up the bulk of the volumes and had a strong polemical and patristic character. They also offered insights on issues of translation, and on the Hebrew and Greek source texts of the Vulgate. The purpose of the version, both the text and notes, was to uphold Catholic tradition in the face of the Protestant Reformation which was heavily influencing England. As such it was an impressive effort by English Catholics to support the Counter-Reformation. Although the Jerusalem Bible, New American Bible (in the United States), the Revised Standard Version, the New Revised Standard Version and the New Jerusalem Bible are the most commonly used in English-speaking Catholic churches, the Challoner revision of the Douay-Rheims is still often the Bible of choice of English-speaking Traditionalist Catholics... "Paul" Gustave Dor? (January 6, 1832 January 23, 1883) was a French artist, printmaker, illustrator and sculptor. Dor? worked primarily with wood engraving… At the age of fifteen Dor? began his career working as a caricaturist for the French paper Le Journal pour rire, and subsequently went on to win commissions to depict scenes from books by Rabelais, Balzac, Milton and Dante... In the 1860s he illustrated a French edition of Cervantes's Don Quixote, and his depictions of the knight and his squire, Sancho Panza, have become so famous that they have influenced subsequent readers, artists, and stage and film directors' ideas of the physical "look" of the two characters. Dor? also illustrated an oversized edition of Edgar Allan Poe's "The Raven", an endeavor that earned him 30,000 francs from publisher Harper & Brothers in 1883. Dor?'s illustrations for the English Bible (1866) were a great success, and in 1867 Dor? had a major exhibition of his work in London. This exhibition led to the foundation of the Dor? Gallery in Bond Street, London... Dor?'s later work included illustrations for new editions of Coleridge's Rime of the Ancient Mariner, Milton's Paradise Lost, Tennyson's The Idylls of the King, The Works of Thomas Hood, and The Divine Comedy. Dor?'s work also appeared in the weekly newspaper The Illustrated London News."

The Douay?Rheims Bible (also known as the Rheims?Douai Bible or Douai Bible, and abbreviated as D?R and DRB) is a translation of the Bible from the Latin Vulgate into English made by members of the English College, Douai, in the service of the Catholic Church. The New Testament portion was published in Reims, France, in 1582, in one volume with extensive commentary and notes. The Old Testament portion was published in two volumes twenty-seven years later in 1609 and 1610 by the University of Douai. The first volume, covering Genesis through Job, was published in 1609; the second, covering Psalms to 2 Machabees plus the apocrypha of the Vulgate was published in 1610. Marginal notes took up the bulk of the volumes and had a strong polemical and patristic character. They offered insights on issues of translation, and on the Hebrew and Greek source texts of the Vulgate.

The purpose of the version, both the text and notes, was to uphold Catholic tradition in the face of the Protestant Reformation which up till then had dominated Elizabethan religion and academic debate. As such it was an impressive effort by English Catholics to support the Counter-Reformation. The New Testament was reprinted in 1600, 1621 and 1633.

The Psalms cover a wide range of themes, including praise, thanksgiving, lamentation, supplication, and wisdom. They are often categorized into various types, such as hymns of praise (e.g., Psalm 100), penitential psalms (e.g., Psalm 51), and royal psalms celebrating the reign of God or the king (e.g., Psalm 2). Many psalms express deep personal emotions, offering insight into the struggles of the faithful, the longing for God’s presence, and the hope for divine intervention in times of trouble. The structure of the Psalms allows for both individual and communal worship, making them integral to the liturgical practices of the Church. Many of the psalms include refrains, repeated phrases, or musical instructions, suggesting their use in public worship settings. Notably, Psalm 23 ("The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want") is among the most beloved, offering comfort and assurance of God's guidance and protection. The Psalms invite believers to engage in a dynamic relationship with God, expressing trust, sorrow, joy, and gratitude. They serve as a source of inspiration for prayer, meditation, and reflection across generations. The Book of Psalms stands as a powerful testament to the depth of human emotion and the unchanging nature of God, encouraging readers to find solace and strength through faith in every circumstance of life.

The first section of the book consists of Jeremiah’s warnings to Judah and Jerusalem (chapters 125). Jeremiah condemns the people for their idolatry, corruption, and disobedience to the covenant, warning them that their actions will lead to God’s judgment. He speaks against alliances with foreign nations and false prophets who offer false hope. Jeremiah prophesies that Judah will be conquered by Babylon and that the people will be taken into exile unless they repent. The second section (chapters 2645) presents a mix of narrative and prophecies, focusing on Jeremiah’s personal struggles and the political events leading up to the fall of Jerusalem in 586 B.C. This section recounts Jeremiah’s conflict with kings, false prophets, and the general populace, many of whom reject his message. Jeremiah is imprisoned, threatened with death, and despised for his persistent warnings, but he remains committed to delivering God’s word. His famous "Letter to the Exiles" encourages the people in Babylonian captivity to settle in the land and wait for God’s appointed time of restoration.
