Weymouth New Testament in Modern Speech, Romans A Contemporary Interpretation of Romans: Exploring Theological Themes and Biblical Commentary in Modern Language【電子書籍】[ Richard Francis Weymouth ]
楽天Kobo電子書籍ストア
|

The "Weymouth New Testament in Modern Speech, Romans" presents a groundbreaking translation of the Epistle to the Romans that breathes contemporary language into the profound theological concepts of Paul. Weymouth employs a clear, direct style that remains faithful to the original Greek text while making it accessible to modern readers. His translation not only preserves the nuanced meanings inherent in the scripture but also resonates with the emotional and spiritual fervor of the apostle'??s message, situating it within the broader context of early Christian thought and the challenges faced by believers in a rapidly changing world. Richard Francis Weymouth, a Victorian scholar, was noted for his visionary approach to biblical translation and his commitment to making scripture understandable without sacrificing its integrity. His extensive background in philology and theology informed his translation philosophy, leading him to develop a version of the New Testament that was both literarily sophisticated and pastorally sensitive, reflecting the linguistic needs of a diverse readership in the 20th century. Readers seeking a fresh yet faithful rendition of Romans will find Weymouth's work to be an invaluable resource, encouraging deeper theological reflection and personal engagement with the Apostle's timeless message. This edition invites both scholars and laypeople alike to explore the intricacies of Pauline doctrine through the lens of modern speech.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

Romans A Commentary【電子書籍】[ Beverly Roberts Gaventa ]
楽天Kobo電子書籍ストア
|

In this new contribution to the New Testament Library, renowned New Testament scholar Beverly Roberts Gaventa offers a fresh account of Paul's Letter to the Romans as an event, both in the sense that it reflects a particular historical moment in Paul's labors and in the sense that it reflects the event God brings about in the gospel Paul represents. Attention to that dual sense of event means that Gaventa attends to the literary, historical, and theological features of the letter.

Throughout the commentary, Gaventa keeps in view central questions of what Paul hoped the letter might accomplish among its listeners in Rome and how his auditors might have heard it when read by Phoebe. In posing potential answers to these questions, Gaventa touches on vital themes such as the intrusion of the gospel of Jesus Christ that prompts Paul to write in the first place, what that event reveals about the situation of all creation, how it relates to both Israel and the Gentiles, and what its implications are for life in faith.

The New Testament Library series offers authoritative commentary on every book and major aspect of the New Testament, providing fresh translations based on the best available ancient manuscripts, critical portrayals of the historical world in which the books were created, careful attention to their literary design, and a theologically perceptive exposition of the biblical text. The contributors are scholars of international standing. The editorial board consists of C. Clifton Black, Princeton Theological Seminary; John T. Carroll, Union Presbyterian Seminary; and Susan E. Hylen, Candler School of Theology, Emory University.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

Romans A Critical and Exegetical Commentary【電子書籍】[ Gareth L Reese ]
楽天Kobo電子書籍ストア
|

This is a phrase-by-phrase commentary and exposition of the New Testament book of Romans. This commentary is used as a college textbook, yet is suitable for lay church members.

Romans was written by Paul during the same period as 1 Corinthians, Galatians, and 2 Corinthians. Though Paul had not yet visited the Roman churches to which the epistle is addressed, he still deals with profound topics requiring deep, critical thought. From start to finish in Romans, Paul's goal is nothing less than the shaping and molding of our world views. With deftness and sureness, Paul covers topics such as the result of Adam's sin on the rest of God's creation, God's providence, the predestination of men and things, the Jews' place in God's administration of history, and the matter of how God saves individual people. Throughout, Paul relentlessly seeks to help us think God's thoughts after Him.

Romans 1:16-17 states the epistle's theme - that the gospel reveals God's way of saving man, a way that has always been conditioned on faithfulness. Paul also presses Christianity's exclusive claims - that God's way of saving man is found in the gospel and only in the gospel! There is simply no other Name or Way by which people can be saved only through Christ Jesus can we have right standing in God's sight.

No book or section of Scripture has been more important in church's history and in the lives of some of its most notable leaders than Romans. Over the centuries, this epistle has been used by God to change men and nations, based on the gospel's revolutionary message that "The righteous shall live by faith."

Romans contains many difficult doctrines. A series of Special Studies gives focused attention to topics such as the "Call" and "Grace" offered in the gospel; God's providence; sin; sanctification; the eternal security offered to believers; predestination; and faith, opinion, and love.

Since this commentary presumes the God-inspired nature of all Biblical writing, the author seeks to harmonize the teachings of Romanswith other relevant Scriptures, and frequently examines the original language in which the epistle was written. An annotated bibliography is included to encourage readers to extend their own studies.

This commentary continues the author's series on the books of the New Testament. Written from the unique standpoint of the Restoration Movement, he can approach Scripture with no special theological doctrine or dogma to defend and explicate. This provides an unhindered freedom to listen to what the Holy Spirit would tell us within the pages of Scripture. By deliberately employing the grammatico-historical method of interpretation, God's Word is allowed to impress upon us the intent the Divine Author had in mind.

The author is Professor Emeritus of the New Testament at Central Christian College of the Bible (Moberly, MO).
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

The Earliest Romans A Character Sketch【電子書籍】[ Ramsay MacMullen ]
楽天Kobo電子書籍ストア
|

"A vibrant account that puts flesh on the bare bones of early Roman history."
---Celia Schultz, University of Michigan

The ancient Romans' story down to 264 B.C. can be made credible by stripping away their later myths and inventions to show how their national character shaped their destiny.

After many generations of scholarly study, consensus is clear: the account in writers like Livy is not to be trusted because their aims were different from ours in history-writing. They wanted their work to be both improving and diverting. It should grow out of the real past, yes, but if that reality couldn't be recovered, or was uncertain, their art did not forbid invention. It more than tolerated dramatic incidents, passions, heroes, heroines, and villains. If, however, all this resulting ancient fiction and adornment are pruned away, a national character can be seen in the remaining bits and pieces of credible information, to explain the familiar story at least in its outlines.

To doubt the written sources has long been acceptable, but this or that detail or narrative section must always be left for salvage by special pleading. To press home the logic of doubt is new. To reach beyond the written sources for a better support in excavated evidence is no novelty; but it is a novelty, to find in archeology the principal substance of the narrative---which is the choice in this book. To use this in turn for the discovery of an ethnic personality, a Roman national character, is key and also novel.

What is repeatedly illustrated and emphasized here is the distance traveled by the art or craft of understanding the past---"history" in that sense---over the course of the last couple of centuries. The art cannot be learned, because it cannot be found, through studying Livy and Company. Readers who care about either of the two disciplines contrasted, Classics and History, may find this argument of interest.

"Like Thucydides of the hyperactive Athenians and de Tocqueville of the nation-building Americans, MacMullen here draws a character sketch of the early Romans---the men who built Rome, conquered Italy, and created an empire. Based on profound familiarity with history, evidence, and their better-known descendants, attention to what they did and failed to do, remarkable insight, empathy, constructive imagination, and not without humor, he reconstructs the homo Romanus and thus helps us imagine what he was like, and understand why he achieved what he did. This little book is informative, full of important ideas, and delightful to read."
---Kurt Raaflaub, Brown University

Jacket image: Marcus Fabius and Quintus Tannius. Fresco.
