The Rebirth of the Women's Prophetic Voices【電子書籍】[ Rev. Dr. Rosalynn Brookins ]

PROPHETIC MINISTRY: As with any ministry, the birthing process is often faced with great resistance by those who lack understanding. Such was the case with the liberation and womanist movement which were birthed out of a struggle for equality. The same holds true for the prophetic ministry. A Global Outlook The original intent for my research was to develop a model of ministry that would speak to the needs and concerns of all women within the local congregations. Yet, in July 2016 a trip to Chennai, India would make an impression upon me and would solidify the need for this work. A delegation of seventy people from across the United States attended the 2016 A. M. E. India Annual Conference hosted by Bishop John Richard Bryant, and his wife, Reverend Dr. Cecelia Williams-Bryant. "God works in mysterious ways, His wonders to perform, He plants His footsteps upon the sea and rides upon every storm." This initial stanza recorded in the Hymn "God Moves in Mysterious Ways" written by Hymnologist, William Cowper, speaks volumes to the mystery by which God makes His presence known to all who seek Him. The delegation participated in various workshops designed to empower and strengthened women living in very cumbersome situations. The women we encountered were referred to as the "untouchables" simply because of the families for whom they were born. Their voices silenced because of institutional and economic oppression known as a caste system. BBC world news defines, "the caste system is a complex social ordering grouping based upon religious purity. It originated from Brahman, the Hindu God of creation. The caste system has main categories: Brahmins- are the intellectuals (the brain of Brahman), Kshatriyas -the Rulers and Warriors (Brahman's arms), Vaishya- are the farmers and traders (Brahman's feet) menial worker and at the very bottom are the Dalits, the untouchables. This caste system mirrors the oppressive and misogynistic system that African Americans, and in particular women have endured for centuries. The various groups lived, worked, and worshipped segregated from one another. Bondage attacks the very core of one's humanity. In an attempt to alter their current economic status, women would use lightening cr?me in an attempt to bleach their skin in hopes of modifying their standing within the community in which they lived and worked. The actions of these women bore witness to the various measures and methods people will often attempt in hopes of escaping the dreadful condition. Encountering these women and listening to their stories also served as a stark reminder to me of the numerous times I, like the beautiful women of Chennai and countless others, had attempted drastic measures as a means of altering one's self-image in hopes of changing from being human commodity to becoming a beloved daughter of the Most-High God. Perhaps the most rewarding aspect of this entire process is knowing that God has entrusted me to embark upon such a monumental task of helping once silenced prophetic voices to be awakened. In doing so, I learned that despite the many obstacles, every step of freedom, regardless how small must be celebrated, even if no one else is able to celebrate. The silencing of one voice is one voice too many. The impact of the patriarchal bias as one of the forces that impacts the female voice within the church. The church is at the stage where that prophetic command is no longer asking about us but continues to ask what about God? To answer that question, a prophetic ministry of teaching and preaching leads to transformation. "True prophetic people are not just a bunch of folks going along with the latest trend. Real Christians are not fakes." It is not always easy to be honest, transparent, or open; but it is breathtakingly refreshing.

“A practical, highly informative, and sympathetic guide.”
ーThe Washington Post

Most of us will become a caregiver at some point in our lives. And we will assume this role for the most personal reason imaginable: wanting to help someone we love. But we may not know where to start, and we may be afraid of losing ourselves in this daunting task.

Former first lady Rosalynn Carter, a longtime advocate for caregivers and mental health, knows firsthand the challenges of this labor of love. Drawing upon her own experiences and those of hundreds of others whose stories she gathered over many decades, Mrs. Carter offers reassuring, practical advice to any caregiver who has faced stress, anxiety, or loneliness.

Helping Yourself Help Others, reissued here with a new foreword, is as relevant as ever. Long before the COVID-19 pandemic inspired national conversations about the vast undervaluing of unpaid caregiving, the dangers of burnout, and the merits of self-care for relief, Rosalynn Carter was shining a light on these matters and everything else that caregivers confront. Physicians of the Future Doctor-Influencers, Patient-Consumers, and the Business of Functional Medicine【電子書籍】[ Rosalynn A. Vega ]

The first scholarly exploration of the forums, practice, and economics of functional medicine.

Physicians of the Future interrogates the hidden logics of inclusion and exclusion in functional medicine (FM), a holistic form of personalized medicine that targets chronic disease. Rosalynn Vega uncovers how, as “wounded healers,” some FM practitioners who are former chronic disease sufferers turn their illness narratives into a form of social capital, leveraging social media to relate to patients and build practices as “doctor-influencers.” Arguing that power and authority operate distinctly in FM when compared to conventional medicine, largely because FM services are paid for out of pocket by socioeconomically privileged “clients,” Vega studies how FM practitioners engage in entrepreneurship of their own while critiquing the profit motives of the existing healthcare system, pharmaceutical industry, and insurance industry. Using data culled from online support groups, conferences, docuseries, blogs, podcasts, YouTube, and TED Talks, as well as her own battles with chronic illness, Vega argues that FM practices prioritize the individual while inadvertently reinscribing inequities based on race and class. Ultimately, she opens avenues of possibility for FM interlocutors wrestling with their responsibility for making functional medicine accessible to all.

Nested Ecologies A Multilayered Ethnography of Functional Medicine【電子書籍】[ Rosalynn A. Vega ]

How functional medicine leverages systems biology and epigenetic science to treat the microbiome and reverse chronic disease.

Each body is a system within a systemーan ecology within the larger context of social, political, economic, cultural, and environmental factors. This is one of the lessons of epigenetics, whereby structural inequalities are literally encoded in our genes. But our ecological embeddedness extends beyond DNA, for each body also teems with trillions of bacteria, yeast, and fungi, all of them imprints of our individual milieus. Nested Ecologies asks what it would mean to take seriously our microbial being, given that our internal ecologies are shaped by inequalities embedded in our physical and social environments.

Further, Rosalynn Vega argues that health practices focused on patients’ unique biology inadvertently reiterate systemic inequities. In particular, functional medicineーwhich attempts to heal chronic disease by leveraging epigenetic science and treating individual microbiomesーreduces illness to problems of “lifestyle,” principally diet, while neglecting the inability of poor people to access nutrition. Functional medicine thus undermines its own critique of the economics of health care. Drawing on novel digital ethnographies and reflecting on her own experience of chronic illness, Vega challenges us to rethink not only the determinants of well-being but also what it is to be human.

No Alternative Childbirth, Citizenship, and Indigenous Culture in Mexico【電子書籍】[ Rosalynn A. Vega ]

Recent anthropological scholarship on “new midwifery” centers on how professional midwives in various countries are helping women reconnect with “nature,” teaching them to trust in their bodies, respecting women’s “choices,” and fighting for women’s right to birth as naturally as possible. In No Alternative, Rosalynn A. Vega uses ethnographic accounts of natural birth practices in Mexico to complicate these narratives about new midwifery and illuminate larger questions of female empowerment, citizenship, and the commodification of indigenous culture, by showing how alternative birth actually reinscribes traditional racial and gender hierarchies.

Vega contrasts the vastly different birthing experiences of upper-class and indigenous Mexican women. Upper-class women often travel to birthing centers to be delivered by professional midwives whose methods are adopted from and represented as indigenous culture, while indigenous women from those same cultures are often forced by lack of resources to use government hospitals regardless of their preferred birthing method. Vega demonstrates that women’s empowerment, having a “choice,” is a privilege of those capable of paying for private medical servicesーalbeit a dubious privilege, as it puts the burden of correctly producing future members of society on women’s shoulders. Vega’s research thus also reveals the limits of citizenship in a neoliberal world, as indigeneity becomes an object of consumption within a transnational racialized economy.

Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter The Georgia Years, 1924-1974【電子書籍】[ E. Stanly Godbold, Jr. ]

Covering their lives from childhood to the end of the Georgia governorship, Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter is one of the few major biographies of an American president that pays significant attention to the First Lady. So deeply were their lives and aspirations intertwined, a close friend once remarked: "You can't really understand Jimmy Carter unless you know Rosalynn." The story of one is the story of the other. To recount their remarkable lives, E. Stanly Godbold, Jr. draws on academic and military records, the governor's correspondence, the recollections of the Carters themselves, as well as original, unpublished interviews with a wide variety of participants in the Carters' political and personal lives. The book reveals a man who was far more complex than the peanut farmer of popular myth, a man who cited both Reinhold Niebuhr and Bob Dylan as early influences on his legal philosophy, was heir to a sizable fortune, and who, with the help of Rosalynn, built a lucrative agribusiness. Nicknamed "Hotshot" by his father, Carter was the first president born in a hospital, rode a motorcycle before entering politics, counted Tolstoy, Dylan Thomas, William Faulkner, and James Agee among his favorite authors, and claimed his wife Rosalynn as the most influential person in his life. Volume I in this two-volume biography details how the Carters rose to power, managed their private and public lives, governed Georgia, and seized control of the national Democratic party. The cast of colorful characters includes "Miss Allie" Smith, "Mr. Earl" and "Miss Lillian," brother Billy, Rachel Clark, Admiral Rickover, George Wallace, Lester Maddox, Richard Nixon, daughter Amy, Charles Kirbo, Hamilton Jordan, Jody Powell, and many more. It is a sweeping, Faulknerian tale of individuals who would change the image of the South in the national mind and the role of the South in the presidency. Indeed, Carter shocked the state of Georgia and the entire country by calling for an end to racial discrimination in 1971, thus launching his national political career. Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter neither sanctifies nor vilifies the Carters but offers instead an even-handed, brilliantly researched, and utterly absorbing account of two ordinary people whose lives together took them to the heights of power and public service in America.

Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Power and Human Rights, 1975-2020【電子書籍】[ E. Stanly Godbold, Jr. ]

The dual biography of the powerful First Couple who attempted to use their presidency to bring peace, human rights, and justice to all peoples of the world and dedicated the remainder of their long lives to making a safer, more caring world. Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter's marriage of over seventy-five years is the longest of any American presidential couple and has been described by them as a "full partnership." President Bill Clinton once said that they have changed more lives around the world than any couple in world history. Their lives have been public and private models of honesty and integrity in post-Watergate America. The second of a two-volume biography of Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter by historian E. Stanly Godbold, Jr., this book offers a comprehensive account of the professional and personal lives of the powerful couple who have worked together as reformers in Georgia, President and First Lady of the United States, and founders of the Carter Center to promote international health, conflict resolution, and democracy. It picks up with their departure from the Georgia governor's mansion and their tireless campaign for the Democratic nomination for president in 1976, the first time a Southerner won the White House in over a century. It details the Carter couple's struggle for recognition on a national stage, the challenges of rising energy costs, mounting inflation, geopolitical tensions, and the "October Surprise" that tainted the 1980 election in which they went down to defeat. During these years, Rosalynn demonstrated that she was a better politician than her husband, offering policy advice, serving as ambassador extraordinaire, sitting in on Cabinet meetings, and working determinedly to provide care and respect for those suffering from mental illness. Their post-presidential work has been unprecedented on the international stage with Habitat for Humanity and especially their establishment of the Carter Center to "wage peace, fight disease, build hope." Carter, after reaching the zenith of his career in negotiating the Camp David Accords of 1978, continued for decades to work for peace in the Middle East. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002, a prize which he quickly said equally belonged to Rosalynn and to the Carter Center. Among the greatest peacemakers of the twentieth century, Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter emerge from this account as inspirational giants in American history and a shining example of the power of a couple in public service.
