Verschwiegen wurde bei dieser Meldung allerdings, da? 146 000 Soldaten allein auf deutscher Seite gefallen, und 90 000 Soldaten in Gefangenschaft geraten waren. Doch wie kam es zur 'Schlacht um Stalingrad'? Im Sommer 1942 formierte sich die deutsche Wehrmacht erneut, um nach der Niederlage vor Moskau (1941/42) das 'Unternehmen Barbarossa' (Eroberung der Sowjetunion zur sogenannten 'Schaffung neuen Lebensraumes') doch noch zum Erfolg zu bringen. Ziel von Hitler war es, die R?stungs- und Industriestadt Stalingrad und die ?lfelder um Baku im Kaukasus, zu erobern, um bei der Unterwerfung der Sowjetunion strategische Vorteile und einen 'gigantischen Umschlagplatz'1 zu haben und nicht zuletzt aus Prestigegr?nden, um die Stadt mit Stalins Namen zu besitzen. Gegen die Vorstellung seiner Gener?le versuchte er diese beiden Ziele gleichzeitig durchzusetzen. W?hrend zu Beginn noch alles nach Plan lief, hatte sich bald die Offensive um Baku festgelaufen. Auch der Angriff auf Stalingrad endete in erbitterten Stra?enk?mpfen. Unter gro?en Verlusten der deutschen und rum?nischen Armeen konnten die Sowjets am 19. November 1942 zum Gegenangriff antreten und die Stadt mit der nun eingeschlossenen 6.Armee einkesseln. Hitler befahl jedoch Stalingrad zu halten und nicht, wie der Befehlshaber der 6. Armee Paulus es vorsah, den Kessel zu durchbrechen und sich nach Westen zur?ckzuziehen. Der strenge Winter und die nicht eingehaltene Luftversorgung machte die Lage der eingeschlossenen Soldaten immer schwieriger. Hinzu kam, da? die versprochenen Entlastungen der anderen Truppen nicht fruchteten. Am 31.1. und 1.2. 1943 ergaben sich schlie?lich die ?brig gebliebenen ersch?pften, gr??tenteils verletzten und kranken, deutschen, italienischen, ?sterreichischen, ungarischen und rum?nischen 90 000 Soldaten in die sowjetische Gefangenschaft.
