New England's Colonial Inns & Taverns Centuries of Yankee Fare and Hospitality【電子書籍】[ Maria Olia ]

New England’s Colonial Inns and Taverns explores the history of these institutions and visits those that are still around. Today, there’s no better remedy for the winter blues than a visit to a Colonial tavern. For centuries, travelers who have stepped out of the cold and into a tavern have found not only hearty Yankee fare, but also a feast for the senses: the warmth of a roaring fire, the creaking of uneven plank floors, the intoxicating incense of a smoky hearth and mulled apple cider, the taste of a cocktail chased by a swig of history. Centuries ago, taverns offered respites for weary wayfarers on horseback. Today, they remain welcome havens from high-speed lives.

America Walks into a Bar A Spirited History of Taverns and Saloons, Speakeasies and Grog Shops【電子書籍】[ Christine Sismondo ]

When George Washington bade farewell to his officers, he did so in New York's Fraunces Tavern. When Andrew Jackson planned his defense of New Orleans against the British in 1815, he met Jean Lafitte in a grog shop. And when John Wilkes Booth plotted with his accomplices to carry out an assassination, they gathered in Surratt Tavern. In America Walks into a Bar, Christine Sismondo recounts the rich and fascinating history of an institution often reviled, yet always central to American life. She traces the tavern from England to New England, showing how even the Puritans valued "a good Beere." With fast-paced narration and lively characters, she carries the story through the twentieth century and beyond, from repeated struggles over licensing and Sunday liquor sales, from the Whiskey Rebellion to the temperance movement, from attempts to ban "treating" to Prohibition and repeal. As the cockpit of organized crime, politics, and everyday social life, the bar has remained vital--and controversial--down to the present. In 2006, when the Hurricane Katrina Emergency Tax Relief Act was passed, a rider excluded bars from applying for aid or tax breaks on the grounds that they contributed nothing to the community. Sismondo proves otherwise: the bar has contributed everything to the American story. Now in paperback, Sismondo's heady cocktail of agile prose and telling anecdotes offers a resounding toast to taprooms, taverns, saloons, speakeasies, and the local hangout where everybody knows your name.

Taverns and Drinking in Early America【電子書籍】[ Sharon V. Salinger ]

A look into the role of public houses, taverns, alcohol consumption in colonial American society.

Sharon V. Salinger's Taverns and Drinking in Early America supplies the first study of public houses and drinking throughout the mainland British colonies. At a time when drinking water supposedly endangered one’s health, colonists of every rank, age, race, and gender drank often and in quantity, and so taverns became arenas for political debate, business transactions, and small-town gossip sessions. Salinger explores the similarities and differences in the roles of drinking and tavern sociability in small towns, cities, and the countryside; in Anglican, Quaker, and Puritan communities; and in four geographic regions. Challenging the prevailing view that taverns tended to break down class and gender differences, Salinger persuasively argues they did not signal social change so much as buttress custom and encourage exclusion.

Praise for Taverns and Drinking in Early America

“The most comprehensive survey to date of this curiously underinvestigated aspect of early American social life . . . [Contains] a wealth of illustrative and amusing anecdotes . . . Well researched and informative.” ーSimon Middleton, William and Mary Quarterly

“Offers a fresh perspective on one of the colonial period's most important social institutions and the drinking behavior that was central to it . . . Salinger’s work is compelling throughout . . . A significant and satisfying book.” ーMark Edward Lender, American Historical Review

“A richly detailed study that helps us understand popular and genteel culture in early America, the place of drink in everyday life, and the relationship between law and perceptions of disorderly behavior.” ーPaul G. E. Clemens, Journal of American History

Colonial Inns and Taverns of Bucks County How Pubs, Taprooms and Hostelries Made Revolutionary History【電子書籍】[ Marie Murphy Duess ]

Inns and taverns occupied a position of central importance in colonial American society. Rest stop, hotel, provisioning center, drinking saloon, dining establishment, center of news and gossip, quartering for soldiers?these retreats served an astonishing variety of roles. In Colonial Inns and Taverns of Bucks County, author Marie Duess filters the colonial and
early modern history of Bucks County through the area?s wide array of stagecoach stops, grog shops and taprooms. These inns created a whole world unto themselves, with a distinct vernacular (did you know the concepts of ?backlog? and ?minding your Ps and Qs? both originated from inn life?), set of customs and rituals and purpose within the greater societal framework.
Follow author Marie Duess into the past and discover a fascinating facet of life in early Pennsylvania.

Joy of Tippling: A Salute to Bars, Taverns, and Pubs【電子書籍】[ Ray Oldenburg ]

The Joy of Tippling is a toast to the importance of drinking together, crafted by the ultimate tippler. Like Ray Oldenburg's bestselling The Great Good Place, in which he coined the now-famous term "third places," his latest book is packed with factual information, humor and wit, personal insights, and sound sociological observations. The Joy of Tippling is a celebration of third places, and a call to community. Ray Oldenburg is known internationally for his book The Great Good Place: Cafes, Coffee Shops, Bookstores, Bars, Hair Salons, and Other Hangouts at the Heart of a Community, which appeared in 1989 and is presently in its third edition. He is coauthoring a fourth edition with Karen Christensen.

"Ray Oldenburg's charming, reasoned ode to tippling and tavernsーto moderate social drinking and the places where this occursーis just the book America needs now. I wish every politician would read it and take its lessons to heart." ー David Wondrich, author of Imbibe! and editor of the Oxford Companion of Spirits and Cocktails

"Great news, tipplers! The killjoys, buzzcrushers, pinch-faced scolds, and puritans are WRONG. Knocking a couple back at the local bar is good for you. In The Joy of Tippling, sociologist and inveterate tippler Ray Oldenburg tells us why, backed up with solid research, indisputable facts and real news, all cheerfully served with dash and wit." ー John Tebeau, author of Bars, Taverns, and Dives New Yorkers Love

"Ray Oldenburg proves what wise tipplers already know: that drinking alcohol, in moderation and in warm company, is good for you. Reading The Joy of Tippling is like sitting on a barstool next to your smartest, most charming friend; it's an edifying experience you'll want to return to again and again." ー St. John Frizell, restaurateur, bartender, and Men's Journal drinks correspondent

"In The Joy of Tippling, Oldenburg turns his attention from that sacred social space known as the public house and instead focuses on the very act that brings us togetherーtippling. A delightful read full of anecdotes and wisdom." ー Jeffrey Morgenthaler, author of Drinking Distilled

"Here's a unique, philosophical approach to what draws us weird humans to bar culture. For those interested in delving into the what, whys, and hows, Ray Oldenburg has done thorough research into these complexities. ー Amanda Schuster, AlcoholProfessor.com

"After corresponding with Ray Oldenburg for twenty years, I've had the pleasure of visiting his favorite 'third places' with him and tippling in his home 'saloon,' hanging out with him and his friends. He's mixed his favorite drinks for me, and I gave him his first taste of baijiu, talking all the while. And that's the real point of his new book: bringing people together." ー Karen Christensen, editor of the SAGE Encyclopedia of Community and publisher of The Joy of Tippling

Houses of Ill Repute The Archaeology of Brothels, Houses, and Taverns in the Greek World【電子書籍】

The study of ancient Greek urbanism has moved from examining the evidence for town planning and the organization of the city-state, or polis, to considerations of "everyday life." That is, it has moved from studying the public (fortifications, marketplaces, council houses, gymnasiums, temples, theaters, fountain houses) to studying the private (the physical remains of Greek houses). But what of those buildings that housed activities neither public nor privateーbrothels, taverns, and other homes of illicit activity? Can they be distinguished from houses? Were businesses like these run from homes? Classical Athenian writers attest to a diverse urban landscape that included tenement houses (sunoikiai), inns (diaitai, pandokeia), factories (ergasteria), taverns (kapelia), gambling dens (skirapheia), training schools (didaskaleia), and brothels (porneia), yet, despite our knowledge of specific terms, associating them with actual physical remains has not been easy. One such writer, Isaeus, mentions tenement houses that hosted prostitutes and wine sellers, while his contemporary Aeschines refers to doctors, smiths, fullers, carpenters, and pimps renting space. Were tenement houses not simply multi-inhabitant spaces but also multipurpose ones?

Houses of Ill Repute is the first book to focus on the difficulties of distinguishing private and semiprivate spaces. While others have studied houses or brothels, this volume looks at both together. The chapters, by leading scholars in the field, address such questions as "What is a house?" and "Did the business of prostitution leave behind a unique archaeological record?" Presenting several approaches to identifying and studying distinctions between domestic residences and houses of ill repute, and drawing on the fields of literature, history, and art history and theory, the volume's contributors provide a way forward for the study of domestic and entertainment spaces in the Hellenic world.

Contributors: Bradley A. Ault, Allison Glazebrook, Mark L. Lawall, Kathleen M. Lynch, David Scahill, Amy C. From Taverns to Gastropubs Food, Drink, and Sociality in England【電子書籍】[ Christel Lane ]

The pub is a prominent social institution integral to British identity. From Taverns of Gastropubs: Food, Drink, and Sociality in England charts the historical development of the English public house from the Restoration period to the twenty-first century, culminating in the contemporary gastropub. It explores issues of class, gender, and national identification to understand the social identity of patrons and how publicans conceive of their establishments' organizational identity. In the context of large-scale pub closures since the 1990s the gastropub is viewed as both a reaction to the traditional drinking pub and as a promising alternative.
Literary criticism about The Pickwick Papers by Dickens. According to the author: "Dickens, like all great authors, had a tendency to underestimate the value of his most popular book. At any rate, it is certainly on record that he thought considerably more of some of his other works than he did of the immortal Pickwick. But The Pickwick Papers has maintained its place through generations, and retains it to-day, as the most popular book in our language--a book unexampled in our literature."

Inn Civility Urban Taverns and Early American Civil Society【電子書籍】[ Vaughn Scribner ]

Examines the critical role of urban taverns in the social and political life of colonial and revolutionary America

From exclusive “city taverns” to seedy “disorderly houses,” urban taverns were wholly engrained in the diverse web of British American life. By the mid-eighteenth century, urban taverns emerged as the most popular, numerous, and accessible public spaces in British America. These shared spaces, which hosted individuals from a broad swath of socioeconomic backgrounds, eliminated the notion of “civilized” and “wild” individuals, and dismayed the elite colonists who hoped to impose a British-style social order upon their local community. More importantly, urban taverns served as critical arenas through which diverse colonists engaged in an ongoing act of societal negotiation.

Inn Civility exhibits how colonists’ struggles to emulate their British homeland ultimately impelled the creation of an American republic. This unique insight demonstrates the messy, often contradictory nature of British American society building. In striving to create a monarchical society based upon tenets of civility, order, and liberty, colonists inadvertently created a political society that the founders would rely upon for their visions of a republican America. The elitist colonists’ futile efforts at realizing a civil society are crucial for understanding America’s controversial beginnings and the fitful development of American republicanism.

I do not claim that it is encyclop?dic in the sense that it will be found to supply a complete index to every inn mentioned in the novelist’s books. Many a reader will recall, I expect, a certain inn in his favourite story which has been overlooked; but, while my chief aim has been to deal with the famous and prominent ones, I have not ignored the minor ones which, in many cases, are also the most alluring, and often play an important part in the story. The plan has been to take the long novels in something approximating to chronological order, followed by the shorter stories and sketches; and, where an inn is mentioned in more than one book, to deal with it fully in the chapter devoted to the story in which it was first alluded to. Inns associated with the novelist’s own life find no place in this volume, unless they have association also with his books.

Closing Time Saloons, Taverns, Dives, and Watering Holes of the Twin Cities【電子書籍】[ Bill Lindeke ]

Authors Bill Lindeke and Andy Sturdevant highlight the drinking establishments that have played small but influential roles in Twin Cities life and history. Starting with the earliest frontier saloons, the book is a multigenerational bar crawl through blind pigs, speakeasies, rathskellars, cocktail lounges, gin mills, fern bars, social clubs, singles bars, gastropubs, and dives. There has been no book in recent years that has attempted to take a broad historical perspective of the Twin Cities’ bars, taverns and saloons over the past 150 years. This book will fill that gap. Marketed towards those interested in the history of alcohol consumption in the US, social histories of Twin Cities communities, architectural ephemera, anecdotes and photography from long-gone parts of the Twin Cities landscape. Features storytelling that is engaging, enlightening, and funny. Bill Lindeke, Ph.D ., is an urban geographer and writer who focuses on how our environments shape our lives. Ghost Taverns of the North East【電子書籍】[ Darren W. Ritson ]

Ghost Taverns is a fascinating, in-depth look at some of the north of England's most haunted public houses and the spectres that are said to reside in them. Written by two of the UK's most respected paranormal researchers, Ghost Taverns takes the reader on a supernatural pub-crawl that starts off at the Albion Inn in Pelaw and ends at Ye Olde Crosse at Alnwick. Inbetween, the authors visit dozens of inns, taverns and watering holes across the region to uncover the truth about their haunted reputations. Characters such as the legendary Giggly Meg who glides the corridors of the Alum Ale House at South Shields, the Sad Cavalier who has been seen at the Black Horse in West Boldon and the two children seen running from a spectral lady in the Tynemouth Lodge Hotel are brought to life - metaphorically, of course - in the hope that they will enchant a whole new generation of readers who may be unaware of them. After reading Ghost Taverns, popping in to your local may never be the same again -
