From A Shepard to a Tenured Professor Defying the Odds【電子書籍】[ Dr. Yegin Habtes ]

This book will take my readers through four continents and several cultures and languages I have experienced. Some of these countries are very different from each other. I could say this book has something for different readers. My readers in the northern hemisphere will be introduced to the fascinating history of Eritrea and Ethiopia. For those who appreciate different cultures, there is enough material about the cultures and customs practiced in certain parts of Africa and the Caribbean. Yet for educators I trained in Africa, the United States of America, and the Caribbean, a section discusses how to train teachers. Above all, the message I want to leave with everyone who reads this book is to believe that anything is possible if you are with it and think there is more than one way to pursue life.

A Tenured Professor A Novel【電子書籍】[ John Kenneth Galbraith ]

This biting satire of academia and high finance by the Harvard economist “is ingenious and humorous even as it chills and cuts close to the bone” (The New York Times).

John Kenneth Galbraith served in the Kennedy administration before becoming one of the twentieth century’s foremost economists and public intellectuals. In A Tenured Professor, he spins his wealth of knowledgeーand knowledge of wealthーinto a delightfully comical morality tale.

Montgomery Martin, a Harvard economics professor, creates a stock forecasting model which makes it possible for him to uncover society's hidden agendas. Seeking proof that human folly has no limit when motivated by greed, Martin sets off a mass hysteria that causes investors to believeーdespite the lessons of history and physicsーthat up is the only direction.

Let's Go for a Ride The Wild Life of Maine’s Longest-Tenured Undercover Game Warden【電子書籍】[ William Livezey ]

Let’s Go for a Ride is the story of William (Bill) Livezey’s thirty-year career in the Maine Warden Service. Heralded as “one of the best covert investigators in the country” by Maine Warden Service Lieutenant Dan Scott, Bill is the agency’s longest-tenured undercover operative, having spent twenty years in the Special Investigations Unit.

“Let’s go for a ride” is the universal bad-guy code for breaking the law. Among Maine’s most sinister wildlife offenders, its utterance is prone to incite alcohol-fueled night hunting, high-speed car chases on winding country roads, drug dealing, arson, and attempted murder. The worst of the worst were Bill Livezey’s bread and butter.

His success at putting the truly bad guys out of business was driven by his upbringing as one of them. Born and raised in Pennsylvania, Bill's father was a successful businessman whose blind ambition sent him down the dark path of drug trafficking. It wasn’t long before young Bill was tagging along and doing drugs with his dad. The aftermath of witnessing his father perish in a fiery standoff with police sent Bill spiraling out of control. He lashed out at law enforcement by dealing drugs, and he numbed the pain and confusion by doing them. Deep down, Bill knew his life was broken. When a high school football teammate invited him to attend a Fellowship of Christian Athletes meeting, he discovered his faith and a new path.

Socrates Tenured The Institutions of 21st-Century Philosophy【電子書籍】[ Robert Frodeman, Professor of Philosophy and founding Director of the Center for the Study o ]

Professional philosophy has strayed so far from its roots that Socrates wouldn’t stand a chance of landing tenure in most departments today. After all, he spent his time talking with people from all walks of life rather than being buried in the secondary literature and polishing arguments for peer-reviewed journals. Yet somehow this hypertrophy styles itself ‘real’ philosophy.

Socrates Tenured diagnoses the pathologies of contemporary philosophy and shows how the field can be revitalized. The first part of the book sketches the crisis facing philosophy in a neoliberal age and traces its roots back to the 20th-century move to turn philosophy into an academic discipline. In the second part the authors look at various attempts from applied ethics to their own brand of ‘field philosophy’ to confront the resulting problems of insularity and societal irrelevance. Part three connects this evaluation of philosophy with wider discussions in the politics of knowledge about the impacts of research on society. The final chapters consider both what impacts philosophy might have and what a philosophy of impact might look like.

Guardians of Mediocrity How Universities Use Tenure Denial to Thwart Change, Creativity, and Intellectual Innovation【電子書籍】[ Foiled Crown Books ]

The essays in this collection document abuses of power with regard to tenure reviews on college and university campuses in the United States. We sought to collect as varied a group of stories as possible, including two final essays not by professors who were denied tenure but by faculty who left their positions voluntarily due to the same abusive dynamics that have resulted in unjust tenure decisions. We included these last two essays as a way to broaden the discussionーthe issue here does not only pertain to institutional failures to check the power of incompetent and malicious administrators; it is also about the nature of higher education, about our values as a country at this particular time in history, about the anti-intellectual forces that prevail in discussions of civil rights and equality.

The intrepid authors who have offered their stories for inclusion in this collection represent a small percentage of the large (and growing) body of teacher-scholars with advanced degrees who are surviving a denial of tenure. We believe this points to a dire need to revise the tenure application process.

Tenure is a necessary feature of higher education because in a democracy we care about due process and about protecting freedoms. However, the procedures for achieving tenure need to be re-evaluated at most institutions of higher education. As the events described in these essays attest, we need better checks and balances and better oversight.

Survive and Thrive A Guide for Untenured Faculty【電子書籍】[ Wendy C. Crone ]

The experience of an untenured faculty member is highly dependent on the quality of the mentoring they receive. This mentoring may come from a number of different sources, and the concept of developing a constellation of mentors is highly recommended, but a mentoring relationship that is guided by the mentee's needs will be the most productive. Often, however, the mentee does not know their own needs, what questions to ask, and what topics they should discuss with a mentor. This book provides a guide to the mentoring process for untenured faculty. Perspectives are provided and questions posed on topics ranging from establishing scholarly expertise and developing professional networks to personal health and balancing responsibilities. The questions posed are not intended for the mentee to answer in isolation, rather a junior faculty member should approach these questions throughout their untenured years with the help of their mentors. Survive and Thrive: A Guide for Untenured Faculty will help to facilitate the mentoring process and lead junior faculty to a path where they can move beyond just surviving and truly thrive in their position.
