Creating Third Spaces of Learning for Post-Capitalism Lessons from Educators, Artists, and Activists【電子書籍】[ Gary L. Anderson ]

In this book*,* the authors’ post-capitalist approach to change focuses less on what we need to dismantle and more on what educators and activists are building in its place. Studying schools and other social organizations in the Global North and South, the authors identify and examine some of the most interesting counterhegemonic spaces in both formal and informal education today.

They view these spaces through a lens of what Gloria Anzaldua and Homi Bhabha call borderlands or "third spaces." These third spaces are created in-between our lived cultural and social identities (first space) and the dominant culture that seeks to define us (second space). This book seeks to better understand how these third spaces conceive of learning, how they are created, the range of experiences among them, the obstacles they face, how they are sustained over time, and how they have built global networks of solidarity. The creation of global networks of third spaces not only signals a shift in progressive political strategy but also an expansion of what counts as spaces that are educational.

This book is well suited to graduate and upper-level undergraduate courses in politics of education, sociology of education, education policy, as well as the humanities, sociology, political science, and the arts.

The Third Spaces of Digital Religion【

This exciting volume explores how religious meaning is generated and performed in our present digital media ecosystem. It uses the spatial metaphor of a third space to visualize the mobility of everyday religion and to explore the dynamic ways in which contemporary subjects imagine, produce, and navigate new religious and spiritual places.

Comprised of seven original essays, this book provides a rigorous discussion of the complex intersections of the digital and religion, demonstrating how third spaces of religion stand out by virtue of their in-betweenness. They exist between private and public, between institution and individual, between authority and individual autonomy, between large media framings and individual "pro-sumption," and between local and translocal. Including probing analysis of how Muslim, Catholic, and Neo-Pagan identities are cultivated and developed online, case studies reflect on the creative outcomes of this condition of in-betweenness and the emergence of other places of religious and spiritual meaning.

Blending theoretical analysis with grounded empirical research, this book is essential reading for students and scholars of contemporary religion, media and religion, sociology of religion, religion, and popular culture.

Musical Collaboration Between Indigenous and Non-Indigenous People in Australia Exchanges in The Third Space【

This book demonstrates the processes of intercultural musical collaboration and how these processes contribute to facilitating positive relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples in Australia. Each of the chapters in this edited collection examines specific examples in diverse contexts, and reflects on key issues that underpin musical exchanges, including the benefits and challenges of intercultural music making. The collection demonstrates how these musical collaborations allow Indigenous and non-Indigenous people to work together, to learn from each other, and to improve and strengthen their relationships. The metaphor of the “third space” of intercultural music making is interwoven in different ways throughout this volume. While focusing on Indigenous Australian/non-Indigenous intercultural musical collaboration, the book will be of interest globally as a resource for scholars and postgraduate students exploring intercultural musical communication in countries with histories of colonisation, such as New Zealand and Canada.

Activate the Third Space How to Align, Communicate and Lead in a Hyper-Competitive World【電子書籍】[ Bill Cornwell ]

What is the most profound challenge facing business today?

Inflation? Interest rates? Economic growth? No, these are exogenous and transitory issues. Supply chains? Shifting consumer demands? Think again. The most important obstacles inhibiting success are internal. Leaders are told to "burn bright"; instead, they burn out, feeling that the burden of success rests on their shoulders alone. Every organization must confront a trinity of issues, if it wishes to succeed in the 21st century:

The Disengagement Pandemic. Globally, only 1 in 5 employees is actively engaged in their work and committed to their company's success. A disengaged workforce impacts productivity, affects mental health and is estimated to cost the US economy more than $8 trillion annually.

Human 'Resources'. Companies proclaim, "People are our best resource!" but they do not walk the talk. Employees are treated as a cost and resource to manage, not as individuals with valuable inputs to share and careers to grow.

Miscommunication and misalignment. How many times have you embarked on a project, only to discover, months later, that you and your teammates have gone in different directions? Alignment snafus routinely cost companies money and time.

Activate the Third Space presents a clear, easy-to-implement model to foster engagement, promote clear communication and ensure alignment. Bill Cornwell's extensive experience facilitating corporate workshops and coaching senior leaders to reach their full potential provides the basis for a captivating tale that will transform modern organizations. Part fictional narrative, part intellectual discourse and field guide, Activate the Third Space presents a road map for how every employee, not just those in the C-suites, can take personal responsibility to ensure success.

Re-Imagining and Re-Placing New York and Istanbul Exploring the Heterotopic and Third Spaces in Paul Auster's and Orhan Pamuk’s City Novels【電子書籍】[ Hatice Bay ]

The author re-examines the urban novels of Auster and Pamuk in the light of Foucault's heterotopia and Bhabha's the Third Space, respectively. Furthermore, for the discussions of the nature of the relationship between the self and the other, this present study deploys Emmanuel Levinas's ethics. This book argues that examining the urban spaces and characters of Auster and Pamuk through the prisms of Foucault, Bhabha and Levinas establishes a new critical framework that gives a constructive and ethical angle to the negative late twentieth-century and early twenty-first century discourses on the city and its inhabitants. The reader of this book will discover urban subjects who actively transform their respective cities into either heterotopic or Third Spaces and thereby become response-able for and attentive to their immediate surroundings, to their national or personal histories and, most importantly, to other people. At the same time, by bringing these two different cities, cultures and authors that are poles apart together, this book aims to problematize commonly held beliefs about Americanness and Turkishness and thus pave the way for looking at discourses such as ≪clash of civilizations≫, ≪margin≫ (Istanbul) and ≪center≫ (New York), the belated and the advanced from a critical point of view suggesting that there is a common discursive affinity with similar outlooks on life, personal, historical and physical spaces on both sides, rather than a ≪clash of civilizations≫. The arguments presented here will be of interest to students and scholars of city literature, comparative literature and history of ideas as well as to readers who have an interest in theory and close reading.

Advaita, Christianity and the Third Space Abhishiktananda and Bede Griffiths in India【電子書籍】[ Jonathan Gordon Smith ]

This book examines the space of meeting between two religions that open up when there are honest attempts at interreligious learning. Taking Abhishiktananda and Bede Griffiths as examplars, and the meeting between Advaita Vedanta and Christianity, the nature of the theological movements within this ?Third Space? are identified, and the resultant hybridities are assessed for their relevance to each tradition. After brief biographical sketches, the author considers how these two monks related to the Indian space and the background of colonial history, and then proceeds to use comparative theology and postcolonial theory to examine their theology. Third Space Theory provides insights into the process of hybridization that is taking place, leading to an appreciation of the importance and challenge in the modern world of Third Spaces of meeting.

≪Jonathan Smith provides important explorations and reflections on a ?third space? and the contribution of a postcolonial theology to the understanding of Christianity and Hinduism. Optimising the Third Space in Higher Education Case Studies of Intercultural and Cross-Boundary Collaboration【電子書籍】[ Natalia Veles ]

Drawing on an empirical study of the cross-boundary, cross-campus, and intercultural collaborations between professional and academic staff, at both an Australian and a Singaporean university, this book demonstrates the potential of third space collaboration in higher education.

Through a multi-case study methodology, the author draws on the antecedent resources of spatial theory to investigate how staff working together, crossing, and transcending various traditional and imaginary boundaries created innovative boundary practices while successfully completing the university projects. The third space projects under investigation range from increasing the academic research visibility and commercialisation of a research solution to expanding the educational choices for students in one geographical region and developing a research culture in one international campus. The findings present practical approaches to strengthening collegiality and professional partnering, challenging the reader to reflect on potential strategies that will apply to their own work environments.

This book will be a useful resource for researchers in higher education, particularly those interested in the third space theory and practice, university collaboration, collaborative capital, and impacts of diversification of university staff roles and identities.

Opening the Red Door Pastoral Counseling for Second-Generation Korean Americans in Third Space【電子書籍】[ Hae-Jin Choe ]

Many second-generation Korean Americans (SGKAs) are living lives of marginality on the edge of Korean American and American cultures. This double life often leads to heightened mental health concerns. The rise of Asian hate crimes in this country in recent months have added to the distress in this population. Due to cultural stigma, however, SGKAs may not seek out counseling or other mental health services. If they do, their unique cultural formation is often not fully addressed, impeding growth and healing. Red Door Ministry (RDM), a pastoral counseling center that started at a local Korean-American church, serves as a model for addressing this issue. Built from a postcolonial understanding of third space, RDM is constructed with various culturally sensitive elements that allow SGKAs to move from places of shame on the margins to empowered new centers. This transformation is examined by four in-depth interviews of RDM clients. These clients show that healing and empowerment were possible because their complex cultural hybridity was addressed in the process of counseling. This process is analyzed using concepts from Western psychological theories, Korean American theology, and postcolonial theory.

Understanding and Improving the Student Experience in Higher Education Navigating the Third Space【電子書籍】[ Jan Bamford ]

This book explores the challenges of improving the student experience in higher education through a ‘third space’ perspective.

This key text studies a variety of approaches by drawing on higher education policy, interviews with academics working in third space roles in higher education in the UK, France, Germany, Holland, North America and Italy, as well as auto-ethnographic narratives. The chapters consider key topical areas affecting student experience including academic support, assessment and feedback, creative approaches to pedagogy, approaches to supporting international students and students as partners. The Third Space of Sovereignty The Postcolonial Politics of U.S.?Indigenous Relations【電子書籍】[ Kevin Bruyneel ]

The imposition of modern American colonial rule has defined U.S.?indigenous relations since the time of the American Civil War. In resistance, Kevin Bruyneel asserts, indigenous political actors work across American spatial and temporal boundaries, demanding rights and resources from the government while also challenging the imposition of colonial rule over their lives. This resistance engenders what he calls a “third space of sovereignty,” which resides neither inside nor outside the U.S. political system but rather exists on its boundaries, exposing both the practices and limitations of American colonial rule.

The Third Space of Sovereignty offers fresh insights on such topics as the crucial importance of the formal end of treaty-making in 1871, indigenous responses to the prospect of U.S. citizenship in the 1920s, native politics during the tumultuous civil rights era of the 1960s, the question of indigenousness in the special election of California’s governor in 2003, and the current issues surrounding gaming and casinos.

In this engaging and provocative work, Bruyneel shows how native political actors have effectively contested the narrow limits that the United States has imposed on indigenous people’s ability to define their identity and to develop economically and politically on their own terms.

Kevin Bruyneel is assistant professor of politics at Babson College.

Global South Scholars in the Western Academy Harnessing Unique Experiences, Knowledges, and Positionality in the Third Space【

By foregrounding the voices and experiences of scholars from the Global South who have migrated to institutions in the Global North, this volume theorizes the "third space" as a unique, rich, and generative position in the Western academy.

Global South Scholars in the Western Academy engages a range of critical methodologies to explore the challenges that Global South scholars have faced in establishing themselves in academic settings in the Global North. The text identifies the unique position that scholars have come to adopt "in-between" North and South and theorizes this positionality as a "third space", which is carved out by academics negotiating personal, professional, and cultural belonging. This liminal subject position, enriched by experiences of migration, racialization, poverty, and difference, is shown to drive knowledge-production and justice-orientated approaches in the academy.

This book provides a new and overdue perspective on the experiences and contributions of Global South scholars in the academy. Recent, pivotal events reinforce the need for reimagining, reconceptualizing, redesigning, and reconstructing educational and governmental institutions. Hope for the amelioration of racial-, ethnic-, class-, religion- and gender-based conflicts resides in the implementation of effective dialogue. Dialogue must cross borders, internally and externally. Border crossings, not limited to geographic or political, are requisite for understandings of the current local, regional, national, transnational, and global conditions. Recent events make necessary a critical border praxis, which includes the creation of third spaces. Current conditions in the US and worldwide add to the urgency of addressing and responding to existential issues confronting educational institutions, societies, economies, and governments at all levels.

Opening Third Spaces for Research in Education Challenging the Limits of Technocratic Methods【電子書籍】[ Erin Blakely ]

A 2022 SPE Outstanding Book Award Winner

Opening Third Spaces for Research in Education challenges dominant educational research methods. It rejects the reductive binaries normalized in social science researchーtheory/practice, objective/subjective, quantitative/qualitative. Drawing from multiple fields and eras, the book opens third spaces between these artificial poles to help researchers expand interpretations and possibilities for research. Critiquing the current focus on the measurement of “student learning outcomes” and high-stakes assessment, the book offers conceptual tools and case examples to support educators in reconceptualizing research. The book critiques the modernist notion that learning is an individual mental process of acquiring knowledge or skills. It argues instead that learning is inextricably entangled with social relations and cannot be isolated or controlled no matter how scientifically rigorous researchers try to be in their study designs. This challenges the current goal of educational research instruction to design “valid and reliable” studies that provide evidence for “best practices,” and reimagines it as opening third spaces to expand opportunities and approaches for inquiry.

Perfect for courses such as: Foundations of Social and Cultural Analysis of Education | Agency, Resistance, and Identity in Education | Critical and Postmodern Pedagogies | Culture, Cognition, and Power Issues in Education | Modernity and Postmodernity in Social Thought and Education | Integrating Research and Practice in Social Justice Education | Cultural Studies in Education | Science, Technology, and Social Research after Eurocentrism | Critical Pedagogy | Language, Performance, and Power | Sociology of Education | Ideology, Racial Politics, and Public Policy: Sociology of Knowledge | Seminar in Cross National Studies of Educational Problems | Participatory Action Research and Programming

The Third Space and Chinese Language Pedagogy Negotiating Intentions and Expectations in Another Culture【

The Third Space and Chinese Language Pedagogy presents the Third Space as a new frame through which foreign language pedagogy is conceptualized as a pedagogy of negotiating intentions and expectations in another culture.

The field of Chinese as a foreign language (CFL) in the past decades has been expanding rapidly at the beginning and intermediate levels, yet it is lacking in scholarship on the true advanced level both in theory building and research-supported curriculum and material development. This book argues that it is time for CFL to go beyond merely satisfying the desire of gazing at the other, whether it is curiosity about the other or superiority over the other, to focusing on learning to work with the other. It reimagines the field as co-constructing a transcultural Third Space where learners are becoming experts in negotiating intentions and expectations in another culture. It presents a range of research-based CFL pedagogical scholarship and practices especially relevant to the advanced level and to the goal of enabling learners to go past fans or critics to become actors/players in the game of cross-lingual and intercultural cooperation.

Zines in Third Space develops third-space theory with a practical engagement in the subcultural space of zines as alternative media produced specifically by feminists and queers of color. Adela C. Licona explores how borderlands rhetorics function in feminist and queer of-color zines to challenge dominant knowledges as well as normativitizing mis/representations. Licona characterizes these zines as third-space sites of borderlands rhetorics revealing dissident performances, disruptive rhetorical acts, and coalitions that effect new cultural, political, economic, and sexual configurations.

Mapping Hispaniola Third Space in Dominican and Haitian Literature【電子書籍】[ Megan Jeanette Myers ]

Because of their respective histories of colonization and independence, the Spanish-speaking Dominican Republic has developed into the largest economy of the Caribbean, while Haiti, occupying the western side of their shared island of Hispaniola, has become one of the poorest countries in the Americas. While some scholars have pointed to such disparities as definitive of the island’s literature, Megan Jeanette Myers challenges this reduction by considering how certain literary texts confront the dominant and, at times, exaggerated anti-Haitian Dominican ideology.

Myers examines the antagonistic portrayal of the two nationsーfrom the anti-Haitian rhetoric of the intellectual elites of Dominican dictator Rafael Trujillo’s rule to the writings of Julia Alvarez, Junot D?az, and others of the Haitian diasporaーendeavoring to reposition Haiti on the literary map of the Dominican Republic and beyond. Focusing on representations of the Haitian-Dominican dynamic that veer from the dominant history, Mapping Hispaniola disrupts the "magnification" and repetition of a Dominican anti-Haitian narrative.

Digital Media, Culture and Education Theorising Third Space Literacies【電子書籍】[ John Potter ]

This book provides a critical commentary on key issues around learning in the digital age in both formal and informal educational settings. The book presents research and thinking about new dynamic literacies, porous expertise, digital making/coding/remixing, curation, storying in digital media, open learning, the networked educator and a number of related topics; it further addresses and develops the notion of a ‘third space literacies’ in contexts for learning. The book takes as its starting point the idea that an emphasis on technology and media, as part of material culture and lived experience, is much needed in the discussion of education, along with a criticality which is too often absent in the discourse around technology and learning. It constructs a narrative thread and a critical synthesis from a sociocultural account of the memes and stereotypical positions around learning, media and technology in the digital age, and will beof great interest to academics interested in the mechanics of learning and the effects of technology on the education experience. It closes with a conversation as a reflexive ‘afterword’ featuring discussion of the key issues with, amongst others, Neil Selwyn and Cathy Burnett.

The Hybrid Church in the City Third Space Thinking【電子書籍】[ Christopher Richard Baker ]

The era of post-colonialism and globalisation has brought new intensities of debate concerning the existence of diversity and plurality, and the need to work in partnerships to resolve major problems of injustice and marginalisation now facing local and global communities. The Church is struggling to connect with the significant economic, political and cultural changes impacting on all types of urban context but especially city centres, inner rings and outer estates and the new ex-urban communities being developed beyond the suburbs. This book argues that theology and the church need to engage more seriously with post-modern reality and thought if points of connection (both theologically and pastorally) are going to be created. The author proposes a sustained engagement with a key concept to emerge from post-modern experience - namely the concept of the Third Space. Drawing on case studies from Europe and the USA primarily, this book examines examples of Third Space methodologies to ask questions about hybrid identities and methods churches might adopt to effectively connect with post-modern cities and civil society. Particular areas of focus by the author include: the role and identity of church in post-modern urban space; the role of public theology in addressing key issues of marginalisation and urbanisation as they impact in the 21st century; the nature and role of local civil society as a local response to globalised patterns of urban, economic, social and cultural change.

Homi Bhaba's Third Space in ?zpetek's Cinema【電子書籍】[ Robert Stolt ]

Essay from the year 2010 in the subject Film Science, grade: 1,3, University of St Andrews, language: English, abstract: In his attempt to break down binary thought structures that characterise interactions between different cultures, in his 1994 work Location of culture, Homi Bhabha defines the term of third space as a place where identities can be renegotiated. The third space can be located beyond the bipolarity of 'us' and 'them' and thus is a territory where we can escape the dilemma of dichotomies and hierarchies. ?zpetek, in Hamam, il bagno turco [Ferzan ?zpetek, 1992] as well as in Harem suar? [Ferzan ?zpetek, 2001], seizes on the idea of Bhaba's third space to describe the encounter with the cultural other and the erotic attraction to the other. In Hamam as well as in Harem ?zpetek is accused of applying an Orientalist approach by showing an utopian imagination of the Oriental Other. According to Said, the notion of the Orient is a discursive construct of the West, while the underlying construction is strictly dichotomic - 'us' vs. 'them' (Said 1978:44). Indeed, imaginary projections of the Orient are often claimed to be mere imaginations and explanations of the Other and the foreign (Breger & D?ring 1998: 30). However, in ?zpetek's films the constructs of Turkey should not be seen as merely following the Orientalist canon, but should rather be 'understood as a measure of ?zpetek's nostalgia, as a transcultural person who now lives in Italy' (Anderlini 2004: 165). In his cinematic processing of concrete life experiences of diaspora, ?zpetek relies on the concept of the third space, by applying it as a guide for a global re-mapping and leaving behind the binary division of West vs. East and traditional vs. modern. What is discussed in this essay is the hamam as the third space in ?zpetek's Hamam and Harem, where people can negotiate their fixed cultural identities and hybridise with the Other. Thus, the third space is applied as an intercultural medium, a space for reflection and mediation (Breger & D?ring 1998: 27). Before focusing on the hamam as the third space, the interaction between East and West, which makes up a crucial part of both films, shall be looked at in chapter two. Furthermore, the hamam will be analysed in chapter three as not only a divested, but also queer space. On top of that, in part four, the emphasis will be placed on the female empowerment that is triggered through the characters' experience in the hamam. Lastly, a retrospective analysis of the paper will conclude the essay.

Reconstructing Identities in Higher Education The rise of 'Third Space' professionals【電子書籍】[ Celia Whitchurch ]

Reconstructing Identities in Higher Education: The Rise of Third Space Professionals draws on studies conducted in Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States to explore the roles and identities of a growing number of staff associated with broadly based institutional projects such as student life and welfare, widening participation, learning support, community partnership, research and business partnership, and institutional research. Thus, at the same time as professional staff are acquiring academic credentials, some academic staff are moving in a more project-oriented direction. This has effectively created a Third Space between professional and academic spheres in which lateral interactions, involving teams and networks, occur in parallel with formal institutional structures and processes, and give rise to new forms of management and leadership. Yet such developments have tended to occur ‘under the radar’, and have not been fully articulated.

The concept of Third Space is offered as a way of exploring the knowledges, relationships, legitimacies and languages that characterise those who work in less boundaried roles**,** and the implications of these developments for both individuals and institutions. The ability to problematise and accommodate a series of paradoxes and tensions, for instance between formal and more open-ended structures and relationships, would appear to be at the heart of working in Third Space. Individuals also grapple with the fact that Third Space can, at one and the same time, be a safe haven for experimentation and creativity, and also a risky space in which there is likely to be contestation and uncertainty.

The text is addressed to professional and academic staff who, by design or default, for long or short periods, find themselves working in Third Space environments; to those to whom such staff may be responsible, including senior management teams; and also to researchers interested in changing identities in higher education.

Communicating in the Third Space【

Communicating in the Third Space aims to clarify Homi K. Bhabha’s theory of the third space of enunciation by reconstructing its philosophical, sociological, geographical, and political meaning with attention to the special advantages and ambiguities that arise as it is applied in practical--as well as theoretical--contexts. The idea of "third space" conceives the encounter of two distinct and unequal social groups as taking place in a special third space of enunciation where culture is disseminated and displaced from the interacting groups, making way for the invention of a hybrid identity, whereby these two groups conceive themselves to partake in a common identity relating to shared space and common dialogue. The essays collected in Communicating in the Third Space--including a preface by Bhabha himself--brilliantly introduce readers to this exciting topic in Cultural and Post-Colonial theory and offers insightful elaboration and critique of the meaning and relevance of life in the "third space."
