The JANE AUSTEN COLLECTION 9 TOP CLASSICS NOVELS (with Free Audio Links)

THE MAJOR NOVELS
- SENSE AND SENSIBILITY
- PRIDE AND PREJUDICE
- MANSFIELD PARK
- EMMA
- NORTHANGER ABBEY
- PERSUASION

SHORT FICTION
- LADY SUSAN

UNFINISHED NOVELS
- SANDITON
- THE WATSONS

Jane Austen (16 December 1775 ? 18 July 1817) was an English novelist whose works of romantic fiction, set among the landed gentry, earned her a place as one of the most widely read writers in English literature. Her realism and biting social commentary have gained her historical importance among scholars and critics.

Austen lived her entire life as part of a close-knit family located on the lower fringes of the English landed gentry. She was educated primarily by her father and older brothers as well as through her own reading. The steadfast support of her family was critical to her development as a professional writer. Her artistic apprenticeship lasted from her teenage years into her thirties. During this period, she experimented with various literary forms, including the epistolary novel which she then abandoned, and wrote and extensively revised three major novels and began a fourth. From 1811 until 1816, with the release of Sense and Sensibility (1811), Pride and Prejudice (1813), Mansfield Park (1814) and Emma (1816), she achieved success as a published writer. She wrote two additional novels, Northanger Abbey and Persuasion, both published posthumously in 1818, and began a third, which was eventually titled Sanditon, but died before completing it.

Austen's works critique the novels of sensibility of the second half of the 18th century and are part of the transition to 19th-century realism. Her plots, though fundamentally comic, highlight the dependence of women on marriage to secure social standing and economic security. Her work brought her little personal fame and only a few positive reviews during her lifetime, but the publication in 1869 of her nephew's A Memoir of Jane Austen introduced her to a wider public, and by the 1940s she had become widely accepted in academia as a great English writer. The second half of the 20th century saw a proliferation of Austen scholarship and the emergence of a Janeite fan culture.

Biographical information concerning Jane Austen is "famously scarce", according to one biographer. Only some personal and family letters remain (by one estimate only 160 out of Austen's 3,000 letters are extant), and her sister Cassandra (to whom most of the letters were originally addressed) burned "the greater part" of the ones she kept and censored those she did not destroy. Other letters were destroyed by the heirs of Admiral Francis Austen, Jane's brother. Most of the biographical material produced for fifty years after Austen's death was written by her relatives and reflects the family's biases in favour of "good quiet Aunt Jane". Scholars have unearthed little information since.

The Watsons Enriched edition. Unveiling Regency England's Love and Class Through Austen's Wit【電子書籍】[ Jane Austen ]
|

In "The Watsons," Jane Austen presents an unfinished narrative that reflects her signature blend of keen social observation and biting irony, set in the early 19th century English gentry. The novel explores the life of the protagonist, Emma Watson, who navigates the complexities of societal expectations, familial duties, and romantic entanglements after her return to her estranged family. Rich in Austen's trademark wit and diverse characterizations, the text captures the intricacies of class distinction and women's roles with unerring precision, offering a tantalizing glimpse into the leisurely yet constrained lives of its characters. Jane Austen, one of the foremost novelists of her time, was known for her sharp critique of social norms and keen insights into human behavior. "The Watsons" emerged from her own experiences of familial dynamics and societal pressures, reflecting her own contemplation on social mobility and the implications of economic dependency. The unfinished nature of the work invites speculation on how Austen might have further interrogated her themes, showcasing her innovative narrative techniques that cleverly weave humor, irony, and poignant social critique. This novel is highly recommended for readers who appreciate not only the elegance of Austen's prose but also the themes of female agency and societal critique that resonate deeply across time. "The Watsons" serves as a compelling exploration of personal identity and social expectation, making it an essential read for anyone interested in the evolution of the novel as a genre and the enduring relevance of Austen's work. In this enriched edition, we have carefully created added value for your reading experience: - A succinct Introduction situates the work's timeless appeal and themes. - The Synopsis outlines the central plot, highlighting key developments without spoiling critical twists. - A detailed Historical Context immerses you in the era's events and influences that shaped the writing. - An Author Biography reveals milestones in the author's life, illuminating the personal insights behind the text. - A thorough Analysis dissects symbols, motifs, and character arcs to unearth underlying meanings. - Reflection questions prompt you to engage personally with the work's messages, connecting them to modern life. - Handーpicked Memorable Quotes shine a spotlight on moments of literary brilliance. - Interactive footnotes clarify unusual references, historical allusions, and archaic phrases for an effortless, more informed read.

Sanditon, The Watsons, and Lady Susan【電子書籍】[ Jane Austen ]
|

Collected together here are three of Jane Austen’s posthumously published works; “Sanditon”, “The Watsons”, and “Lady Susan”. These fragmentary tales show Austen experimenting with different literary styles and parodying the popular novels of her day. In “Sanditon,” Austen uses the premise of an idyllic and modern seaside town to examine its inhabitants and their various social circles with her trademark sharp social observations and wit. “The Watsons” is the story of Mr. Watson, a widowed clergyman, and his two sons and four daughters. The heroine of the tale is the spirited daughter Emma, who finds her marriage prospects lessened by both her poverty and, ironically, her sense of refinement. “Lady Susan”, the most complete of the three, is an epistolary novel which focuses on the story of its title character, a beautiful, but petty and unscrupulous woman. Lady Susan engages in constant flirtations and manipulations while she searches for rich husbands for herself and her young daughter. Also included here is a cancelled chapter of “Persuasion” and the short essay “Plan of a Novel” in which Austen sets out her capacity as a novelist and what makes up the ideal novel. This edition includes a biographical afterword.

The Complete Novels of Jane Austen is an exquisite compendium that showcases Austen's mastery in portraying early 19th-century British society through her keen socio-political insights and rich character development. Encompassing her six major novels'ーPride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility, Emma, and others'ーthis volume offers a comprehensive exploration of themes such as class distinctions, gender roles, and the quest for personal happiness. Austen's distinctive use of free indirect discourse invites readers into the minds of her protagonists, revealing complex inner lives and societal critiques woven with irony and wit. Jane Austen, born in 1775, was immersed in an environment that encouraged literary pursuits from a young age, notably through her father's library and the influence of her educated family. Her close observations of genteel society and its conventions, combined with her personal experiences, including her own struggles with love and financial stability, inform the nuanced narratives found in her novels. Austen's work reflects an acute awareness of the limited options available to women, making her an enduring figure in feminist literature and commentary. Readers seeking an insightful blend of romance, humor, and social critique will find The Complete Novels of Jane Austen an essential addition to their literary repertoire. This collection not only highlights her remarkable storytelling prowess but also serves as a timeless reflection on the complexities of human relationships and societal norms. Engage with the wit and wisdom of Austen, and discover why her work continues to resonate with audiences across generations. In this enriched edition, we have carefully created added value for your reading experience: - A comprehensive Introduction outlines these selected works' unifying features, themes, or stylistic evolutions. - The Author Biography highlights personal milestones and literary influences that shape the entire body of writing. - A Historical Context section situates the works in their broader eraーsocial currents, cultural trends, and key events that underpin their creation. - A concise Synopsis (Selection) offers an accessible overview of the included texts, helping readers navigate plotlines and main ideas without revealing critical twists. - A unified Analysis examines recurring motifs and stylistic hallmarks across the collection, tying the stories together while spotlighting the different work's strengths. - Reflection questions inspire deeper contemplation of the author's overarching message, inviting readers to draw connections among different texts and relate them to modern contexts. - Lastly, our handーpicked Memorable Quotes distill pivotal lines and turning points, serving as touchstones for the collection's central themes.

The Watsons By Jane Austen, Concluded by L. Oulton【電子書籍】[ Jane Austen ]
|

This work was left by its author, a fragment without a name, in so elementary a state as not even to be divided into chapters, and some obscurities and inaccuracies of expression may be observed in it which the author would probably have corrected. The original manuscript is the property of my sister, Miss Austen, by whose permission it is now published. I have called it The Watsons, for the sake of having a title by which to designate it. Two questions may be asked concerning it. When was it written? And, why was it never finished? I was unable to answer the first question, so long as I had only the internal evidence of the style to guide me. I felt satisfied, indeed, that it did not belong to that early class of her writings which are mentioned at page 46 of the Memoir, but rather bore marks of her more mature style, though it had never been subjected to the filing and polishing process by which she was accustomed to impart a high finish to her published works. At last, on a close inspection of the original manuscript, the water-marks of 1803 and 1804 were found in the paper on which it was written. It is therefore probable that it was composed at Bath, before she ceased to reside there in 1805. This would place the date a few years later than the composition, but earlier than the publication ofSense and Sensibility, and Pride and Prejudice. To the second question, why was it never finished? I can give no satisfactory answer. I think it will be generally admitted that there is much in it which promised well; that some of the characters are drawn with her wonted vigour, and some with a delicate discrimination peculiarly her own; and that it is rich in her especial power of telling the story, and bringing out the characters by conversation rather than by description. It could not have been broken up for the purpose of using the materials in another fabric; for, with the exception of Mrs. Robert Watson, in whom a resemblance to the future Mrs. Elton is very discernible, it would not be easy to trace much resemblance between this and any of her subsequent works. She must have felt some regret at leaving Tom Musgrave's character incomplete; yet he never appears elsewhere. My own idea is, but it is only a guess, that the author became aware of the evil of having placed her heroine too low, in such a position of poverty and obscurity as, though not necessarily connected with vulgarity, has a sad tendency to degenerate into it; and, therefore, like a singer who has begun on too low a note, she discontinued the strain. It was an error of which she was likely to become more sensible, as she grew older and saw more of Society; certainly she never repeated it by placing the heroine of any subsequent work under circumstances likely to be unfavourable to the refinement of a lady.

Lady Susan, The Watsons, and Sanditon Unfinished Fictions and Other Writings【電子書籍】[ Jane Austen ]

'I am tired of submitting my will to the caprices of others-of resigning my own judgement in deference to those to whom I owe no duty, and for whom I feel no respect.' The unfinished fictions collected here are the novels and other writing that Jane Austen did not publish. The protagonist of the earliest story is Lady Susan, a sexual predator and a brilliant and manipulative sociopath. The Watsons, a tale of riches to rags, is set in a village deep in mud and misery where the Watson sisters waste away, day after dull day, waiting for the suitors who never appear. Sanditon, the novel interrupted by the author's death, is a topical satire on the niche marketing campaign waged by investors in the latest seaside resort, the fictional Sanditon, situated on England's over-supplied south coast. If The Watsons shares the disturbed life of a Chekhov short story, Sanditon's cast of eccentrics anticipates the zany world of Dickens. Experimental and sharp-elbowed, all three probe new areas of invention and push out beyond what we expect to find in a novel by Jane Austen. This edition collects together all Austen's unpublished adult fiction, poetry, and related writings, written in her late teens, in her late twenties, and in the year she died, aged forty-one. They contribute more than a dash of discomfort to our modern image of the romantic novelist and reveal Jane Austen's development as a writer.

The Watsons: By Jane Austen, Concluded by L. Oulton【電子書籍】[ Jane Austen & L. Oulton ]

|

"The Watsons" begins with Emma Watson, a young woman who returns to her family's home in the fictional town of Sanditon after spending time away. The story focuses on Emma's attempts to navigate the complexities of social life, marriage prospects, and family dynamics. Her return brings her into contact with various suitors and social figures, leading to a series of romantic and social intrigues. The novel explores themes common to Austen's work, including class, marriage, and morality, with a particular focus on the constraints and opportunities available to women in the early 19th century. Due to its unfinished nature, the plot remains incomplete, leaving readers with an intriguing glimpse of Austen's narrative style and character development.L. Oulton completed the manuscript, providing an ending to the story, though this completion is not as well-known or as widely studied as Austen's fully finished works. The finished version seeks to align with Austen's style and themes while bringing closure to the narrative.

Northanger Abbey, Lady Susan, The Watsons, Sanditon【電子書籍】[ Jane Austen ]

'...in suspecting General Tilney of either murdering or shutting up his wife, she had scarcely sinned against his character, or magnified his cruelty.' Northanger Abbey is about the misadventures of Catherine Morland, young, ingenuous, and mettlesome, and an indefatigable reader of gothic novels. Their romantic excess and dark overstatement feed her imagination, as tyrannical fathers and diabolical villains work their evil on forlorn heroines in isolated settings. What could be more remote from the uneventful securities of life in the midland counties of England? Yet as Austen brilliantly contrasts fiction with reality, ordinary life takes a more sinister turn, and edginess and circumspection are reaffirmed alongside comedy and literary burlesque. Also including Austen's other short fictions, Lady Susan, The Watsons, and Sanditon, this valuable new edition examines the ambitious and innovative works with which she inaugurated as well as closed her career. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.
