The Invisible Hand of the Market The Theory of Moral Sentiments + The Wealth of Nations (2 Pioneering Studies of Capitalism)【電子書籍】[ Adam Smith ]
|

In "The Invisible Hand of the Market," Adam Smith presents a groundbreaking exploration of economic theory that profoundly influenced the discipline of economics and our understanding of market dynamics. Written in the 18th century, Smith employs a compelling blend of philosophical discourse and empirical observation to argue for the self-regulating nature of markets, driven by individuals pursuing their self-interest. His eloquent prose not only illuminates contemporary economic practices but also lays the foundational principles of capitalism, emphasizing how individual efforts contribute to collective prosperity through what he famously terms the 'invisible hand.' Adam Smith, often hailed as the father of modern economics, was a philosopher and economist whose intellectual milieu shaped his theories. His experiences in mercantile society and a keen observation of human behavior helped him articulate the complex interrelationships within economic systems. Smith's educational background in moral philosophy, intertwined with his commitment to rational inquiry, led him to challenge prevailing mercantilist ideas that dominated his time, ultimately advocating for free-market principles that remain relevant today. This seminal work is an essential read for anyone interested in understanding the intricacies of economic systems and the ethical implications of market activities. Smith's insights extend beyond economics, prompting readers to reconsider the balance between self-interest and social good. Whether you are a seasoned economist or a casual reader, "The Invisible Hand of the Market" offers invaluable perspectives that continue to resonate in contemporary discourse.

Richer and More Equal A New History of Wealth in the West【電子書籍】[ Daniel Waldenstr?m ]
|

Once there were princes and peasants and very few between. The extremes of wealth and poverty are still with us, but that shouldn't blind us to the fact our societies have been utterly transformed for the better over the past century. As Daniel Waldenstr?m makes clear in this authoritative account of wealth accumulation and inequality in the modern west, we are today both significantly richer and more equal.

Using cutting-edge research and new, sometimes surprising, data, Waldenstr?m shows that what stands out since the late 1800s is a massive rise in the size of the middle class and its share of society’s total wealth. Unfettered capitalism, it seems, doesn’t have to lead to boundless inequality. The key to progress was political and institutional change that enabled citizens to become educated, better paid, and to amass wealth through housing and pension savings. Waldenstr?m asks how we can consolidate these gains while encouraging the creation of new capital. The answer, he argues, is to pursue tax and social policies that raise the wealth of people in the bottom and middle rather than cutting wealth of entrepreneurs at the top.

Richer and More Equal is a benchmark account of one of the most profound and encouraging social changes in human history and a blueprint for continued progress.

The Next Millionaire Next Door Enduring Strategies for Building Wealth【電子書籍】[ Thomas J. Stanley Ph.D. ]
|

Over the past 40 years, Tom Stanley and his daughter Sarah Stanley Fallaw have been involved in research examining how self-made, economically successful Americans became that way. Despite the publication of The Millionaire Next Door, The Millionaire Mind, and others, myths about
wealth in American still abound. Government officials, journalists, and many American still tend to
confuse income with wealth. A new generation of household financial managers are hearing from so-called experts in personal financial management due to the proliferation of the cottage industry of financial blogs, podcasts, and the like. In many cases, these outlets are simply experiences shared without science, case studies without data based on broader populations. Therefore, the authors decided to take another look at millionaires in the United States to examine what changes could be seen 20 years after the original publication of The Millionaire Next Door. In this book the authors highlight how specific decisions, behaviors, and characteristics align with the discipline of wealth building, covering areas such as consumption, budgeting, careers, investing, and financial management in general. They include results from quantitative studies of wealth as well as case studies of individuals who have been successful in building wealth. They discuss general paths to building wealth on your own, focusing specifically on careers and lifestyles associated with each path, and what it takes to be successful in each.

The Wealth of Nations An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes (Economic Theory Classic)【電子書籍】[ Adam Smith ]
|

The Wealth of Nations is the magnum opus of the Scottish economist and moral philosopher Adam Smith. The book offers one of the world's first collected descriptions of what builds nations' wealth, and is today a fundamental work in classical economics. By reflecting upon the economics at the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, the book touches upon such broad topics as the division of labor, productivity, and free markets. The Wealth of Nations was the product of seventeen years of notes and earlier works, as well as an observation of conversation among economists of the time concerning economic and societal conditions during the beginning of the Industrial Revolution. The result was a treatise which sought to offer a practical application for reformed economic theory to replace the mercantilist and physiocratic economic theories that were becoming less relevant in the time of industrial progress and innovation.

The Invisible Hand of the Market: The Theory of Moral Sentiments + The Wealth of Nations (2 Pioneering Studies of Capitalism)【電子書籍】[ Adam Smith ]

|

This carefully crafted ebook: “The Invisible Hand of the Market: The Theory of Moral Sentiments + The Wealth of Nations (2 Pioneering Studies of Capitalism)” is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents.
The invisible hand of the market is a metaphor conceived by Adam Smith to describe the self-regulating behavior of the marketplace. The exact phrase is used just three times in Smith's writings, but has come to capture his important claim that individuals' efforts to maximize their own gains in a free market benefits society, even if the ambitious have no benevolent intentions. Smith came up with the two meanings of the phrase from Richard Cantillon who developed both economic applications in his model of the isolated estate. He first introduced the concept in The Theory of Moral Sentiments, written in 1759. In this work, however, the idea of the market is not discussed, and the word "capitalism" is never used. By the time he wrote The Wealth of Nations in 1776, Smith had studied the economic models of the French Physiocrats for many years, and in this work the invisible hand is more directly linked to the concept of the market: specifically that it is competition between buyers and sellers that channels the profit motive of individuals on both sides of the transaction such that improved products are produced and at lower costs. This process whereby competition channels ambition toward socially desirable ends comes out most clearly in The Wealth of Nations, Book I, Chapter 7. The idea of markets automatically channeling self-interest toward socially desirable ends is a central justification for the laissez-faire economic philosophy, which lies behind neoclassical economics. In this sense, the central disagreement between economic ideologies can be viewed as a disagreement about how powerful the "invisible hand" is.

His Sombre Rivals A Tale of Wealth, Rivalry, and Moral Dilemmas in Gilded Age New York【電子書籍】[ Edward Payson Roe ]
|

In "His Sombre Rivals," Edward Payson Roe crafts a poignant narrative set against the backdrop of the American Civil War, exploring the intricate emotional landscapes of his characters while highlighting the moral complexities of war. Roe employs a vivid, naturalistic style that reflects the psychological turmoil experienced by individuals torn between duty and personal allegiance. Drawing on the era's historical context, he delves into themes of love, sacrifice, and the haunting repercussions of conflict, illustrating how the specter of war can shape destinies and drive wedges between once-close companions. Edward Payson Roe, a prominent figure in 19th-century American literature, was deeply influenced by his experiences as a chaplain during the Civil War, which not only shaped his worldview but also informed much of his writing. His literary career is marked by a deep concern for social issues and a nuanced understanding of human struggles. Roe's personal background as a well-educated man and his commitment to moral storytelling enabled him to tackle complex emotional themes in his narratives with remarkable empathy and depth. I highly recommend "His Sombre Rivals" to readers interested in historical fiction that captures the essence of human strife within the context of war. Roe'??s insights into the inner workings of his characters offer a profound commentary on the nature of rivalry and the human condition. This novel stands as both a gripping tale and a thoughtful reflection on the enduring impact of war on society and individuals alike.

** 10TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION
** INTERNATIONAL BEST-SELLER; NOW TRANSLATED IN OVER 25 LANGUAGES WORLDWIDE

Has the "settle-for-less" financial plan become your plan for wealth? It sounds a little something like this:

"Graduate from college, get a good job, save 10% of your paycheck, cancel the movie channels, quit drinking expensive Starbucks, save and penny-pinch your life away, trust your life-savings to an indexed-fund peddled from Wall Street, and then one day, when you are oh, say, 65 years old, you can retire rich.”

Welcome to the greatest scam of the modern world, one that will take you 50 years of your youth to realize that you were conned. You don’t want to DIE rich in life’s tired twilight, you want to LIVE rich in vibrant youth.

Unfortunately, since you were old enough to work a job, you've been lied to by an army of financial profiteers and mainstream media hucksters. Accept the Slowlane as your financial roadmap and your future will blow carelessly adrift on a sailboat of HOPE: HOPE you can get a job and keep it, HOPE the stock market doesn't crash, HOPE the economy stays solvent, HOPE, HOPE, and HOPE. And why have we progressed so unequally around the world, resulting in the great disparities between nations that exist today? But by tracing that same journey back in time and peeling away the layers of influenceーcolonialism, political institutions, societal structure, cultureーhe arrives also at an explanation of inequality’s ultimate causes: those ancestral populations that enjoyed fruitful geographical characteristics and rich diversity were set on the path to prosperity, while those that lacked it were disadvantaged in ways still echo today.

As we face ecological crisis across the globe, The Journey of Humanity is a book of urgent truths and enduring relevance, with lessons that are both hopeful and profound: gender equality, investment in education, and balancing diversity with social cohesion are the keys not only to our species’ thriving but to its survival.

The Great Escape Health, Wealth, and the Origins of Inequality【電子書籍】[ Angus Deaton ]
|

The world is a better place than it used to be. People are wealthier and healthier, and live longer lives. Yet the escapes from destitution by so many have left gaping inequalities between people and between nations. In The Great Escape, Angus Deaton--one of the foremost experts on economic development and on poverty--tells the remarkable story of how, starting 250 years ago, some parts of the world began to experience sustained progress, opening up gaps and setting the stage for today's hugely unequal world. Deaton takes an in-depth look at the historical and ongoing patterns behind the health and wealth of nations, and he addresses what needs to be done to help those left behind.

Deaton describes vast innovations and wrenching setbacks: the successes of antibiotics, pest control, vaccinations, and clean water on the one hand, and disastrous famines and the HIV/AIDS epidemic on the other. He examines the United States, a nation that has prospered but is today experiencing slower growth and increasing inequality. He also considers how economic growth in India and China has improved the lives of more than a billion people. Deaton argues that international aid has been ineffective and even harmful. He suggests alternative efforts--including reforming incentives to drug companies and lifting trade restrictions--that will allow the developing world to bring about its own Great Escape.

Demonstrating how changes in health and living standards have transformed our lives, The Great Escape is a powerful guide to addressing the well-being of all nations.

Progress and Poverty, Volumes I and II Enriched edition. An Inquiry into the Cause of Industrial Depressions and of Increase of Want with Increase of Wealth【電子書籍】[ Henry George ]
|

In "Progress and Poverty, Volumes I and II," Henry George presents a compelling examination of the intricate relationship between economic progress and social inequality. Written in the late 19th century, this monumental work adopts a straightforward yet persuasive prose style, underscoring his arguments with vivid anecdotes and extensive empirical data. George critiques the prevailing economic systems of his time, particularly capitalism, which he argues exacerbates poverty even amidst wealth creation. His seminal concept of the 'single tax' on land as a remedy for socioeconomic disparity invites readers to reconsider the ethical implications of property ownership and the distribution of wealth. Henry George, an influential economist and social reformer, was deeply affected by the urban poverty and labor struggles he witnessed during his early years in antebellum America. His experiences as a newspaper editor in California and interactions with the working class fueled his desire to explore the roots of social injustice and find practical solutions. His background in journalism provided him with the rhetorical skills needed to engage a wide audience in profound discussions about economics and ethics. "Progress and Poverty" remains a vital text for readers who are interested in the interplay between economic policies and social justice. It is a powerful argument for reformers seeking to bridge the gap between wealth and poverty, and its insights continue to resonate in contemporary debates about economic inequality. Readers will find George's work not only thought-provoking but also a call to action for fostering a more equitable society. In this enriched edition, we have carefully created added value for your reading experience: - A succinct Introduction situates the work's timeless appeal and themes. - The Synopsis outlines the central plot, highlighting key developments without spoiling critical twists. - A detailed Historical Context immerses you in the era's events and influences that shaped the writing. - A thorough Analysis dissects symbols, motifs, and character arcs to unearth underlying meanings. - Reflection questions prompt you to engage personally with the work's messages, connecting them to modern life. - Handーpicked Memorable Quotes shine a spotlight on moments of literary brilliance. - Interactive footnotes clarify unusual references, historical allusions, and archaic phrases for an effortless, more informed read.
