He is also credited for notating a number of Bach's final works. Given this most illustrious of mentors - and notable friends, such as C.P.E. Bach - it is surprising that Muthel's music has not been more widely appreciated since his own death in 1788. However, Matteo Venturini's new recording of his complete organ music is set to change that. Praised by the English music historian Charles Burney as full of novelty, taste and grace, Muthel's compositions for the organ are wide-ranging: From imposing fantasias to more delicately paced chorale preludes, as well as a set of variations on the chorale Jesu, meine Freude. His music is highly original, particularly in the inner movements which are characterized by rhythmically striking motifs and phrases, together with abrupt changes of dynamics. Three organs are used on this recording, all inspired by instruments of the North German Baroque, to demonstrate the variety of sound achievable in this graceful music. Matteo Venturini, winner of no less than eight competitions and a regular at prestigious international music festivals across Europe and America, is a seasoned interpreter of these works from the late Baroque in which he specialises. The author of a thesis on the organ works of Muthel's contemporary Daniel Magnus Gronau, Venturini's debut release on Brilliant Classics of Gronau's music (BC94843) was described as 'admirably played' in BBC Music Magazine and was Record of the Month on MusicWeb International. Johann Gottfried Muthel was the last pupil of the great Johann Sebastian Bach. He was present at the master's deathbed, and he performed the funeral services, taking over the duties of the deceased Cantor. Muhtel's music (full of novelty, taste and grace according to the great art historian and traveller Charles Burney) is of a wide variety: his Organ Fantasias are imposing, monumental and substantial, his chorale preludes offer intimate meditations on the chorale texts, all of it written in a highly original, dynamic musical language full of contrasts and instrumental virtuosity. Little is known about Gronau's life, other than he was titular organist at St John's Church in Danzig - where he earned an exceptionally high salary: 100 florins per quarter. His music was highly acclaimed in it's day; after his death, the Chapter of St John's bought the manuscript of a cycle of chorale variations for organ from his sister, paying a third as much again to have it handsomely bound in two volumes. Gronau left a small treatise on transposition and four books of keyboard music, the Chorale Variations of which form the subject of this engaging release. Similarly structured and containing between two and five variations (the first of which normally utilizes the chorale as a fugue subject), the works reveal the far more 'modern' approach adopted by Gronau in relation to the rest of his northern contemporaries - Es wird schier der letzte Tag, for example, requires the right hand to play on two keyboards against a continuo-like accompaniment in the left hand and pedals. The Variations certainly represent one of the most extensive compendiums of organ registrations to survive from the late Baroque period of organ music in Germany, and on hand to perform is Matteo Venturini, winner of no less than eight competitions and a regular at prestigious international music festivals across Europe and America. Venturini, with his thesis on Gronau's organ music, is clearly an expert in this field of repertoire; here, on his 13th recording, he reveals the sheer quality of this composer's music, making a strong case for why the Danzig genius is worthy of rediscovery and re-evaluation. Inspired by the pulsating cultural and intellectual life at the Hanoverian court, Venturini wrote ambitious orches-tral music full of joie de vivre, defined by numerous concertato passages for both wind and string instruments. His works feature a rich diversity of - sometimes unusual - colors: as his concerto soloists, he chooses not only combinations of one or two oboes, recorders and violins, but also two bassoons and two cellos, or even an oboe, two recorders and violin - the latter being a combination reminiscent of JS Bach's Brandenburg Concertos which were to be written a few years later. The release marks the beginning of the collaboration between audite and la festa musicale. The ensemble presents a representative cross section of Venturini's instrumental music: three orchestral suites from Opus 1, which was already published in print during his lifetime, as well as two discoveries from Swedish music collections; three works are presented as first recordings (Op. 1/2, Ouverture a 5, Concerto a 6). The North German baroque ensemble la festa musicale stands for first rate artistic level, which is reflected in creative, interdisciplinary concert formats and top-class collaborations. He opens with a quartet of liturgical voluntaries by Padre Antonio Casini, notable for their fluid brilliance. Luigi Ferdinando Casamorata (1807-1881) was a more significant figure in Florentine musical life who trained in law but composed sacred music throughout his career. These Twelve Short Exercises were designed for use by the students of the newly founded organ school in Florence. Limpid and classical in style, they exploit the full range of colours available on new Italian organs of the period. Casamorata's Organ Mass develops it's ideas in more relaxed fashion, less reliant on counterpoint than concerned to accompany the liturgy in a spirit of solemn devotion. Giovacchino Maglioni (1814-1888) was another composer and administrator who significantly contributed to the renewal of liturgical music against the prevailing fashion for opera. Matteo Venturini has chosen three excerpts from the third part of his Istituzioni Teorico-Pratiche per Organo from the 1870s; in character they comprise a missing link between the sunny extroversion of much operatically influenced instrumental writing of the period and the more sober aesthetic of the Cecilian movement. To capture the original soundscape and spirit of these pieces as envisaged by their composers, organist Matteo Venturini has selected two instruments of the period for this recording. With it's brilliant, direct voice, the monumental organ at Corsanico (Vincenzo Colonna 1606 / Agati-Tronci 1899) lends itself perfectly to the bright colours of Casini's music. As soon as his voice broke, he became organist at the court chapel in Dresden, and Sch?tz took him to Hamburg for lessons with the most celebrated German organist of the day, Jakob Praetorius. Weckmann also spent time with Heinrich Scheidemann, enabling him, in the words of one contemporary commentator 'to moderate Praetorius's severity with Scheidemann's gentleness'. In due course Weckmann took over Sch?tz's post as director of the court chapel in Dresden, but he returned to Hamburg in 1655 and settled there as organist of the city's most prestigious churches, enjoying great success before his death in 1674. Weckmann's organ music is remarkable for it's originality above all: richly textured with a sophisticated use of harmony and counterpoint, occasionally quirky but infused with an expressive intensity matched by few of his contemporaries. There are nine surviving sets of chorale variations for organ and they count among his masterpieces, ranging in texture from thick, six-voice imitative polyphony with double pedal to effusive soloistic figurations over sustained, sensuous backgrounds. Interspersed with the variation sets here are shorter Canzons, Toccatas, Preludes and Fugues which present Weckmann at his most intimate, exuberant and inventive. With only one rival set of Weckmann's organ music presently available, this new recording from Matteo Venturini will command the attention of all organ-lovers. He opens with a quartet of liturgical voluntaries by Padre Antonio Casini, notable for their fluid brilliance. Luigi Ferdinando Casamorata (1807-1881) was a more significant figure in Florentine musical life who trained in law but composed sacred music throughout his career. These Twelve Short Exercises were designed for use by the students of the newly founded organ school in Florence. Limpid and classical in style, they exploit the full range of colours available on new Italian organs of the period. Casamorata's Organ Mass develops it's ideas in more relaxed fashion, less reliant on counterpoint than concerned to accompany the liturgy in a spirit of solemn devotion. Giovacchino Maglioni (1814-1888) was another composer and administrator who significantly contributed to the renewal of liturgical music against the prevailing fashion for opera. Matteo Venturini has chosen three excerpts from the third part of his Istituzioni Teorico-Pratiche per Organo from the 1870s; in character they comprise a missing link between the sunny extroversion of much operatically influenced instrumental writing of the period and the more sober aesthetic of the Cecilian movement. To capture the original soundscape and spirit of these pieces as envisaged by their composers, organist Matteo Venturini has selected two instruments of the period for this recording. With it's brilliant, direct voice, the monumental organ at Corsanico (Vincenzo Colonna 1606 / Agati-Tronci 1899) lends itself perfectly to the bright colours of Casini's music. あめりかん・ぱい | 発売日: 2021/2/5輸入盤USレーベル: Audite収録曲:コメント:The Concerti of the violinist-composer Francesco Venturini (c.1675-1745) are a real discovery - melodious, virtuosic, elegant and dance-like, combining Italian and French stylistic elements to form a "mixed taste", as Telemann described this melange. Inspired by the pulsating cultural and intellectual life at the Hanoverian court, Venturini wrote ambitious orches-tral music full of joie de vivre, defined by numerous concertato passages for both wind and string instruments. His works feature a rich diversity of - sometimes unusual - colors: as his concerto soloists, he chooses not only combinations of one or two oboes, recorders and violins, but also two bassoons and two cellos, or even an oboe, two recorders and violin - the latter being a combination reminiscent of JS Bach's Brandenburg Concertos which were to be written a few years later. The release marks the beginning of the collaboration between audite and la festa musicale. The ensemble presents a representative cross section of Venturini's instrumental music: three orchestral suites from Opus 1, which was already published in print during his lifetime, as well as two discoveries from Swedish music collections; three works are presented as first recordings (Op. 1/2, Ouverture a 5, Concerto a 6). The North German baroque ensemble la festa musicale stands for first rate artistic level, which is reflected in creative, interdisciplinary concert formats and top-class collaborations. The interpretations intensify the colorfulness of the works by means of instrumentation variations beyond the original score, in line with the common practice in the Baroque period, as well as by additional effects such as the use of percussion instruments.The Concerti of the violinist-composer Francesco Venturini (c.1675-1745) are a real discovery - melodious, virtuosic, elegant and dance-like, combining Italian and French stylistic elements to form a "mixed taste", as Telemann described this melange. Inspired by the pulsating cultural and intellectual life at the Hanoverian court, Venturini wrote ambitious orches-tral music full of joie de vivre, defined by numerous concertato passages for both wind and string instruments. His works feature a rich diversity of - sometimes unusual - colors: as his concerto soloists, he chooses not only combinations of one or two oboes, recorders and violins, but also two bassoons and two cellos, or even an oboe, two recorders and violin - the latter being a combination reminiscent of JS Bach's Brandenburg Concertos which were to be written a few years later. The release marks the beginning of the collaboration between audite and la festa musicale. The ensemble presents a representative cross section of Venturini's instrumental music: three orchestral suites from Opus 1, which was already published in print during his lifetime, as well as two discoveries from Swedish music collections; three works are presented as first recordings (Op. 1/2, Ouverture a 5, Concerto a 6).
