The Buddhist on Death Row【電子書籍】[ David Sheff ]
|

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author, an extraordinary story of redemption in the darkest of places.

Jarvis Jay Masters’s early life was a horror story whose outline we know too well. Born in Long Beach, California, his house was filled with crack, alcohol, physical abuse, and men who paid his mother for sex. He and his siblings were split up and sent to foster care when he was five, and he progressed quickly to juvenile detention, car theft, armed robbery, and ultimately San Quentin. While in prison, he was set up for the murder of a guard ? a conviction which landed him on death row, where he’s been since 1990.

At the time of his murder trial, he was held in solitary confinement, torn by rage and anxiety, felled by headaches, seizures, and panic attacks. A criminal investigator repeatedly offered to teach him breathing exercises which he repeatedly refused, until desperation moved him.

With uncanny clarity, David Sheff describes Masters’s gradual but profound transformation from a man dedicated to hurting others to one who has prevented violence on the prison yard, counselled high school kids by mail, and helped prisoners -and even guards ? find meaning in their lives.

Along the way, Masters becomes drawn to the Buddhist principles ? compassion, sacrifice, and living in the moment -and gains the admiration of Buddhists worldwide. And while he is still in San Quentin and still on death row, he shows us all how to ease our everyday suffering, relish the light that surrounds us, and endure the tragedies that befall us all.

The Tender Heart of Sadness: 28 Aspects of Warriorship Drawn from the Buddhist and Shambhala Traditions【電子書籍】[ Roger Guest ]
|

The Tender Heart of Sadness explores the spiritual path of warriorship as presented by Shambhala Buddhism. Written by a senior student of Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche as an expression of respect to his teacher and lineage, this is one of relatively few books to emerge from this very rich and brilliant tradition.

The Shambhala teachings challenge the core addictions of ego and celebrate the inherent goodness of our human condition. They promote the exploration of personal experience by arousing wakefulness and practicing gentle and fearless warriorship. This path combines psychological bravery with dignified conduct and artfulness, and aligns us with the natural tenderness, compassion and genuine openness of our humanity.

This small volume is intended as a commentary on a few of the teachings offered along the Shambhala path. It is intended to be a companion to those sincerely exploring their inner nature by bringing the practice of meditation into their daily lives. Topics range from basic attention to the role of humor, elegant speech and the wisdom of emotions.

NEAR AWAKENING and The Value of Life The Spiritual Journey of a Buddhist Nun and An Essay on the Gradual Path【電子書籍】[ Quinn McDonald ]
|

“He asked if I was all settled in; although he meant settled into my accommodations, I took it to also mean settled in to meditateーready to settle the mind into concentration. Always look for the double meaning.” As a young adult, Quinn McDonald sought to understand the nature of truth: is there a singular universal truth, or does truth vary from person to person? Unsatisfied with the lack of answers in her hometown of Winnipeg, Manitoba, she ventured to Thailand to seek enlightenment as a Buddhist nun. Over the next thirteen years, she would receive teachings from the most prolific leaders in Buddhism and journey across the world on her path to near awakening. As she studies and meditates, she must overcome obstacles both mental and physical: from splitting with her partner when they ordain at separate monasteries to having an infection cut out of her with no anaesthetic, Quinn’s path to the truth is a long and arduous one. But through the friends she makes and the teachers she connects with, she learns to decipher the teachings of the Buddha and apply them to her life, bringing her closer to understanding the nature of the world.

An Introduction to Early Buddhist Soteriology Freedom of Mind and Freedom by Wisdom【電子書籍】[ G. A. Somaratne ]
|

The book offers a comprehensive discussion on the Buddhist liberation and meditation concepts based on the original P?li scriptures of Therav?da Buddhism. It interprets the early Buddhist soteriology critically and sympathetically by interweaving the Buddhological and the Buddhistic debates on understanding the Buddha’s original teaching on bondage, liberation, liberated ones, and meditation. It showcases the liberal and pluralistic character of early Buddhist soteriology by interpreting it psychologically through the lens of the Buddha's recognition of two sets of psychosomatic and epistemic mental configurations active in the human mind. It shows how this dualism pervades the early Buddhist soteriology by pointing out its recognition of craving and ignorance as two causes of suffering; the emancipation of mind and the emancipation by wisdom as two constituents of liberation; and the meditative appeasing and the meditative watching as two methods to attain that liberation. It demonstrates how the Buddha structures a gradual path to liberation enabling individuals to experience many temporary and irreversible secondary goals along the way and allowing them to join the path at any stage appropriate to their temperaments and advancement at a given time and space. The book therefore serves the students and scholars of Buddhism, religion, and psychology to obtain a comprehensive and insightful introduction to Buddhist soteriology.

Mapping the Buddhist Path to Liberation Diversity and Consistency Based on the P?li Nik?yas and the Chinese ?gamas【電子書籍】[ Jianxun Shi ]
|

Due to the diversity in Buddhism, its essence remains a puzzle. This book investigates the Buddhist path to liberation from a practical and critical perspective by searching for patterns found in the P?li Nik?yas and the Chinese ?gamas. The early discourses depict the Buddhist path as a network of routes leading to the same goal: liberation from suffering. This book summarizes various teachings in three aspects, provides a template theory for systematically presenting the formulas of the sequential training of the path, and analyses the differences and similarities among diverse descriptions of the path in the early Buddhist texts. By offering a comprehensive map of the Buddhist path, this book will appeal to scholars and students of Buddhist studies as well as those practitioners with a serious interest in the Buddhist path.

Brains, Buddhas, and Believing The Problem of Intentionality in Classical Buddhist and Cognitive-Scientific Philosophy of Mind【電子書籍】[ Dan Arnold ]
|

Premodern Buddhists are sometimes characterized as veritable "mind scientists" whose insights anticipate modern research on the brain and mind. Aiming to complicate this story, Dan Arnold confronts a significant obstacle to popular attempts at harmonizing classical Buddhist and modern scientific thought: since most Indian Buddhists held that the mental continuum is uninterrupted by death (its continuity is what Buddhists mean by "rebirth"), they would have no truck with the idea that everything about the mental can be explained in terms of brain events. Nevertheless, a predominant stream of Indian Buddhist thought, associated with the seventh-century thinker Dharmakirti, turns out to be vulnerable to arguments modern philosophers have leveled against physicalism.

By characterizing the philosophical problems commonly faced by Dharmakirti and contemporary philosophers such as Jerry Fodor and Daniel Dennett, Arnold seeks to advance an understanding of both first-millennium Indian arguments and contemporary debates on the philosophy of mind. The issues center on what modern philosophers have called intentionalityーthe fact that the mind can be about (or represent or mean) other things. Tracing an account of intentionality through Kant, Wilfrid Sellars, and John McDowell, Arnold argues that intentionality cannot, in principle, be explained in causal terms.

Elaborating some of Dharmakirti's central commitments (chiefly his apoha theory of meaning and his account of self-awareness), Arnold shows that despite his concern to refute physicalism, Dharmakirti's causal explanations of the mental mean that modern arguments from intentionality cut as much against his project as they do against physicalist philosophies of mind. This is evident in the arguments of some of Dharmakirti's contemporaneous Indian critics (proponents of the orthodox Brahmanical Mimasa school as well as fellow Buddhists from the Madhyamaka school of thought), whose critiques exemplify the same logic as modern arguments from intentionality. Elaborating these various strands of thought, Arnold shows that seemingly arcane arguments among first-millennium Indian thinkers can illuminate matters still very much at the heart of contemporary philosophy.

The Sound of Vultures' Wings The Tibetan Buddhist Ch?d Ritual Practice of the Female Buddha Machik Labdr?n【電子書籍】[ Jeffrey W. Cupchik ]
|

Explores the music of the Tibetan Ch?d tradition.

The Sound of Vultures' Wings offers the first in-depth exploration of the music of the Tibetan Ch?d tradition, which is based on the liturgical song-poems of the twelfth-century Tibetan female ascetic Machik Labdr?n (1055?1153). Ch?d is a musical-meditative Vajray?na method for cutting off the root of suffering, our mistaken view of a self. The Ch?d practitioner applies the antidote to self-cherishing by developing bodhicitta (altruistic awakening mind) and the antidote to self-grasping through the realization of the ultimate nature of reality: the correct view of emptiness. Ch?d is regarded by many Tibetan Lamas as one of the most effective Buddhist practices for spiritual and social transformation. Jeffrey W. Cupchik details the significance of the complex, interwoven performative aspects of this meditative ritual and explains how its practice can bring about experiences of insight and inner transformation. In doing so, he undoes the notion of meditation being exclusively an experience of silence and stillness.

Welcoming Beginner's Mind Zen and Tibetan Buddhist Wisdom on Experiencing Our True Nature【電子書籍】[ Gaylon Ferguson ]
|

This nuanced commentary on the famous Zen oxherding pictures explores the paradox of welcoming our true nature anew at each stage of spiritual unfolding.

Renowned for centuries, the classic Zen oxherding pictures vividly illustrate the stages of the spiritual journeyーfrom seeking and finding to ultimately forgetting the illusory self and awakening to our true nature. In his commentary on these images, Gaylon Ferguson guides us on an experiential path into these seeming contradictions through welcomingーthe simple, challenging, and always new possibility of opening to exactly what’s occurring in our experience. Distinct from meditation and mindfulness, this contemplative exercise leads us beyond spiritual bypassing (using spiritual practices to repress or avoid parts of ourselves) and spiritual materialism (practicing with a heavy sense of ego). Rich with teachings from the great Zen teacher and author of Zen Mind, Beginner’s Mind Shunryu Suzuki Roshi, as well as extensive commentary from Tibetan meditation master Ch?gyam Trungpa Rinpoche and others who have illuminated the oxherding pictures, this book invites you into a process of spiritual maturation that never occurs elsewhere than here or other than now.

Featuring a foreword by David Chadwick, author of Crooked Cucumber: The Life and Zen Teaching of Shunryu Suzuki.

‘Buddhist Catechism’, composed in 1881, is one of Henry Steel Olcott's most enduring contributions to the revival of Buddhism in Sri Lanka and remains in use there today. The text outlines what Olcott saw to be the basic doctrines of Buddhism, including the life of the Buddha, the message of the Dharma, and the role of the Sangha. The text also treats how the Buddha's message correlates with contemporary society. Olcott was considered by South Asians and others to be a Buddhist revivalist.Colonel Henry Steel Olcott [1832-1907] was the first western Buddhist convert, probably since antiquity. He co-founded the Theosophical Society and was its first president. The only contributor to the 19th-century southern Buddhist revival who was born a Protestant, Olcott was able to promote Eastern ideas to the western society."I taught you not to believe merely because you have heard, but when you believed of your own consciousness, then to act accordingly and abundantly." Together they take us on a journey through the vehicles of Buddhism, elucidating some common misunderstandings and basic principles of the Buddhist path, all the while encouraging us to move from our head (intellectual understanding) towards our heart (experiential understanding).

'To get an experiential understanding you have to go deep into yourself and learn how to bring your awareness and mindfulness to the place from which you deeply experience. It is a matter of 'heart' rather than 'head'. Sometimes it is said that the longest journey is from your head to your heart. Which is what we mean when we talk about developing the right view and understanding it experientially. This is an on going process.'

The End of Divine Truthiness: Love, Power, and God Powerful Buddhist-Christian-Taoist Love【電子書籍】[ Paul Joseph Greene ]
|

In The End of Divine Truthiness, Paul Joseph Greene confronts stark realities of terrifying theologies that make a mockery out of divine love. With urgent resolve, Greene answers Martin Luther King, Jr.'s pointed challenge to overcome "reckless and abusive . . . power without love," and "sentimental and anemic . . . love without power." Too many theologies cast God either as the tyrant whose loveless power lifts up the mighty or the victim whose powerless love sends the poor away empty. Wielding Stephen Colbert's word "truthiness" as a scalpel, Greene slices out one perilous theology after another to restore the wholesome truth that God is love. Supported by three world religions--Buddhism, Christianity, and Taoism--he discovers a remarkably harmonious and revolutionary divine power that is fully aligned with divine love. To reunify love and power here in the world, as King challenges, it is time to abandon ideologies of divine power that devastate divine love and promote atrocities. Greene's call for "the end of divine truthiness" heralds a new day for the God whose love is power and whose power is love.
