Racial Beachhead Diversity and Democracy in a Military Town【電子書籍】[ Carol Lynn McKibben ]
|

In 1917, Fort Ord was established in the tiny subdivision of Seaside, California. Over the course of the 20th century, it held great national and military importanceーa major launching point for World War II operations, the first base in the military to undergo complete integration, the West Coast's most important training base for draftees in the Vietnam War, a site of important civil rights movementsーuntil its closure in the 1990s. Alongside it, the city of Seaside took form. Racial Beachhead offers the story of this city, shaped over the decades by military policies of racial integration in the context of the ideals of the American civil rights movement.

Middle class blacks, together with other military familiesーblack, white, Hispanic, and Asianーcreated a local politics of inclusion that continues to serve as a reminder that integration can work to change ideas about race. Though Seaside's relationship with the military makes it unique, at the same time the story of Seaside is part and parcel of the story of 20th century American town life. Its story contributes to the growing history of cities of colorーthose minority-majority places that are increasingly the face of urban America.

Beachhead Assault The Story of the Royal Naval Commandos in World War II【電子書籍】[ David Lee ]

"Each tale leaves you gasping at the almost nonchalant, offhand accounts of extraordinary courage and dangers. This is a pageturner of a book." -Journal of Naval Engineering

The Royal Naval Commandos had one of the most dangerous and important tasks of any unit in World War II. They were first onto the invasion beaches and they were the last to leave.

Their remarkable story, from their early formation and their training to the invasions they spearheaded, is told here through a series of brilliantly linked anecdotes. Each tale is one of extraordinary courage and should ensure the legacy of the Commandos is not forgotten.

The book includes a Foreword by Man and Boy author Tony Parsons, whose father was a Royal Naval Commando who fought at Elba. It also contains a preface by Ken Oakley, Chairman of the Royal Naval Commando Association.

Israel, A Beachhead in the Middle East From European Colony to US Power Projection Platform【電子書籍】[ Stephen Gowans ]

Washington has poured billions into Israel's economy and military and, since 1967, Israel has undertaken innumerable operations on Washington's behalf against states that reject US supremacy and economic domination. The self-appointed Jewish state has become a watch-dog capable of sufficiently punishing neighboring countries discourteous towards the West. Stephen Gowans challenges the specious argument that Israel controls US foreign policy, tracing the development of the self-declared Jewish state through its efforts to suppress regional liberation movements integrated into the US empire as a pro-imperialist Sparta of the Middle East.

Israel, A Beachhead in the Middle East From European Colony to US Power Projection Platform【電子書籍】[ Stephen Gowans ]

One US military leader has called Israel “the intelligence equivalent of five CIAs.” An Israeli cabinet minister likens his country to “the equivalent of a dozen US aircraft carriers,” while the Jerusalem Post defines Israel as the executive of a “superior Western military force that” protects “America’s interests in the region.” Arab leaders have called Israel “a club the United States uses against the Arabs,” and “a poisoned dagger implanted in the heart of the Arab nation.” Israel’s first leaders proclaimed their new state in 1948 under a portrait of Theodore Herzl, who had defined the future Jewish state as “a settler colony for European Jews in the Middle East under the military umbrella of one of the Great Powers.” The first Great Power to sponsor Herzl’s dream was Great Britain in 1917 when foreign secretary Sir Arthur Balfour promised British support for a Jewish homeland in Palestine. In 1967 Israel launched a successful war against the highly popular Arab nationalist movement of Egyptian leader Gamal Abdel Nasser, the most popular Arab leader since the Prophet Mohammed. Nasser rallied the world’s oppressed to the project of throwing off the chains of colonialism and subordination to the West. He inspired leaders such as Nelson Mandela, Fidel Castro, Hugo Chavez, and Muammar Gaddafi. Viewing Israel as a potentially valuable asset in suppressing liberation movements, Washington poured billions into Israel’s economy and military. Since 1967, Israel has undertaken innumerable operations on Washington’s behalf, against states that reject US supremacy and economic domination. The self-appointed Jewish state has become what Zionists from Herzl to an editor of Haaretz, the liberal Israeli newspaper, have defined as a watch-dog capable of sufficiently punishing neighboring countries discourteous towards the West. Stephen Gowans challenges the specious argument that Israel controls US foreign policy, tracing the development of the self-declared Jewish state, from its conception in the ideas of Theodore Herzl, to its birth as a European colony, through its efforts to suppress regional liberation movements, to its emergence as an extension of the Pentagon, integrated into the US empire as a pro-imperialist Sparta of the Middle East. Reviews “Stephen Gowans’ book is a concise and pertinent de-mythologizing of Zionist propaganda, from early Zionists and founders, to the fascist global right leadership at present … a tantalizing historical read, and a huge and valuable resource text, both.” John Steppling, Counterpunch

Sunrays on the Beachhead of the New Creation A Novel【電子書籍】[ Joshua E. Livingston ]
|

A letter from an erstwhile mother to her estranged son, distanced by decades, sends our omniscient narrator on a critical journey to narrate himself in light of a cruciform history and eschatological hope. Along the way, he encounters a cadre of failures in the faith that, in some way, help him to limp along. What emerges is an intertextual tapestry of prose covering personal crises and rude awakenings in moral philosophy, political theory, and apocalyptic theology. To what end will the journey lead? Arrivals themselves are dead ends. Sunrays on the Beachhead of the New Creation is a hybrid novel of dialogue and fever dreams. Serving multiple life sentences, it borrows its narrative logic from film theory, or perhaps biology, no, theology: rub two subjects together and a third emerges. Accompanied by the stunning pointillist imagery of Judy Langemo Roth, this story is a sandbox of literary fragments, misfitted, angular, and invasive. It's hilarious, like life. Do you enjoy curling up with a good book? It's like that, but instead of with a good book, it's in the fetal position.

Beachheads War, Peace, and Tourism in Postwar Okinawa【電子書籍】[ Gerald Figal ]
|

This original and fresh book explores Okinawa’s makeover as a tourist mecca in the long historical shadow and among the physical ruins of the Pacific War’s most devastating land battle. Gerald Figal considers how a place burdened by a history of semicolonialism, memories of war and occupation, economic hardship, and contentious current political affairs has reshaped itself into a resort destination. Drawing on an innovative mix of detailed archival research and extensive fieldwork, Gerald Figal considers the ways Okinawa has accommodated war experience and its legacies within the manufacture and promotion of both a “tropical paradise” image and a heritage tourism site identified with the premodern Ryukyu Kingdom. Tracing the postwar formation of “Tourist Okinawa,” Figal addresses interrelated issues of economic sustainability, local political autonomy, interregional and international relations, environmental preservation, historical and cultural self-representation, and especially Okinawa's role as a global peace site laboring under the legacies of war. From the end of World War Two to the present, the author follows Okinawa’s evolution through three main themes: war memorialization, tourism-influenced environmental and historical restoration, and invasion and occupation represented by U.S. military bases and beach resorts. Creatively, accessibly, and eloquently written, this compelling work highlights a set of islands that represent key issues facing contemporary Japan.

Carentan 1944 Connecting the D-Day Beachheads【電子書籍】[ Steven J. Zaloga ]
|

An in-depth look at the US' desperate battle to secure Carentan and support the Normandy invasion and the elite German units that sought to repel them.

Although the US Army had successfully secured both Utah and Omaha Beach on D-Day, the next tactical problem was to connect the two beachheads. Utah and Omaha were separated by the Vire River estuary. Carentan was the first major town on the river, and as such was of vital tactical importance. However, this was not lost on the Germans, who dispatched their elite Fallschirmj?ger-Regiment 6 to hold the town. On the US side, the task of capturing Carentan fell to the 101st Airborne Division, and in the week following D-Day, US and German troops waged a battle for Carentan.

Here, expert historian Steven J. Zaloga goes in depth into the initial battle on June 10?12 , 1944, the German counterattack and the final Allied victory. With stunning artwork, detailed maps and BEVs, firsthand accounts, and period images, this study brings to life the fierce fighting between paratrooper forces and highlights how this Allied success led onto the next phase of Operation Overlord.
