In 'Dwellers in the Hills + The Mountain School-Teacher + The Gilded Chair', Melville Davisson Post presents a collection of three captivating short stories set in the Appalachian region of the United States. Through intricate plots and rich characterization, Post explores themes of justice, societal conventions, and the human experience. His writing style is characterized by detailed descriptions, subtle irony, and a deep understanding of the region's culture and people, making these stories not only entertaining but also thought-provoking in their commentary on rural life in the early 20th century. Melville Davisson Post's background as a lawyer and judge provides insight into his exploration of legal issues and moral dilemmas in his stories. His experience living in rural West Virginia also informs his portrayal of the Appalachian landscape and its inhabitants, adding authenticity and depth to his narratives. From an Easy Chair【電子書籍】[ Sir Edwin Ray Lankester ]
|

This volume consists of brief notes in plain language on a variety of scientific matters. I speak of new discoveries, real or so-called by mistake; of old well-established facts and explanations of strange occurrences which are more familiar to men of science than to people who have not had the time and opportunity to ascertain what is, and what is not proved and known about Nature and her ways. I do not address my reader from the professor’s chair, but from an easy chair. Just as in the club or my friend’s smoking-room, I might talk of these things, so do I propose to talk here. My hope is that what I have to say will interest those who are not experts in science, and yet have a desire for trustworthy information and opinion on the vast variety of topics which come up day by day for consideration and discussion, and can only be explained or rightly understood by the aid of that systematised knowledge which is called science. Science and the scientific point of view have a very wide, indeed, an unlimited range. Though the making of discoveries of real importance and the full understanding of the steps by which they are made involves, as a rule, long study and special training, yet there is a vast deal of healthy excitement and pleasure connected with the progress of science, in which all can share by receiving, as it were, messages from the front. By contributing true records and observations of fact which serve, in however small a way, as ammunition and material of war for the use of the fighting line, we can all help and take part in the advance of science. A great feature of what is called science is that it is true. The actual result achieved by science is the record of “that which is”ーit can be examined, tested, and proved. But science does not merely collect accurate records of fact. In order to discover new things, new relations, and hidden causes she has to make use of guesses and flights of imagination. The “hypotheses” or guesses are not wild ones, but reasonable suppositions based on careful consideration of existing knowledge. They are never mistaken by trained workers in science for “facts,” nor put forward as such. On the contrary, they are tested and so confirmed or rejected by experiment or trial. Hence the necessity of accuracy in observation for the purposes of science; hence the proverbial “scientific accuracy.” It is of no use to form a guess based upon erroneous statements. It is mere waste of time to accept and build theories upon loose wonder-mongers’ gossip. And, further, the evidence which you obtain in order to confirm or dismiss your “guess” must be equally beyond suspicion as to its accuracy. It must be an observation of fact free from prejudice and illusion. Your guess, if proved to be true, adds to the solid record of science new facts and new proofs of relationships, which again lead on the imagination of men of science to new guesses, and so to new confirmation or rejection, and to the growth of the vast record of accurate knowledge. To seek out in the endless whirling complexity of things which surround us in earth, sky, and sea, the truth, the knowledge of “that which is,” of the relation of these things to one another as cause and effect and their action and influence on ourselvesーthis is the aim of science. To substitute real understanding and the power of control of the surrounding world for the misleading and cruelly harmful conceptions existing in the minds of simple unskilled mankindーthis is the daily achievement of science.

The Giant's Chair【電子書籍】[ Marc A. Catone ]
|

Adam Chance is the quintessential Sixties man. He saw The Beatles at Shea Stadium, went to Woodstock and was active in the Antiwar movement. Then, he wrote about the counterculture in his best-selling book, WALDEN PAVED OVER. Now, in the 1990s, Adam finds himself middle aged, divorced and suffering from every author's nightmare ... writer's block. An understanding therapist suggests that he keep a journal to do a life review. The effect is liberating. No longer does he have to worry about word limits and cranky editors. He's totally free to express his point of view and explore new writing styles. Adam recalls sharing a pizza with Jim Morrison in a Greek restaurant. He reminisces about a transcendent conversation with John Lennon in Central Park. He balances satire and parody by imagining a 'Sixties Sell-Out' awards ceremony, composing a list of 60 things he fears might happen and writing the script for the final episode of STAR TREK. Adam's fondest memories are of his childhood with best friend, Midnight Duke. In the Summer of 1963, Adam and Midnight climb the Giant's Chair, a huge rock formation located in the rolling hills beyond their back yards. The two boys remain friends into adulthood as they pass through different phases of their lives. Then tragedy strikes and each man must cope with the outcome on his own level. Eventually, both friends are led back to the Giant's Chair. Adam gives himself permission to explore his spiritual side. He immerses himself in books on mind/body healing and practices meditation. He seeks forgiveness from his ex-wife, desires reconciliation with an estranged brother and celebrates the unique qualities of the Sixties generation. Adam's road to understanding contains a few bumps along the way, but his journal becomes the path to renewal. Ultimately, Adam Chance discovers an answer that has always been inside him ... a basic truth as old as time itself.

Skylite and Bumpy's Rocking Chair【電子書籍】[ Patty Hamill ]
|

Skylite and Bumpy's Rocking Chair

Patty Hamill

Patty Hamill

I want to dedicate this book to two very special people in my life. One is Derrick who made me believe in myself and to keep my dream alive. This man came into my life and took Skylites Adventure internationally. Now, with this new book Skylite and Bumpies Rocking Chair is I think my best one so does Derrick and my sister Sandi.

To my sister Sandi, who listened to me read my story over and over without saying a word.

It was all good feedback and the laughter we shared with this book is something I will never forget.

Love you both

Dozzie was whistling on his way to visit Skylite. Suddenly Dozzie found himself knocked to the ground. Stunned, Dozzie yelled, "Skylite, what are you doing and why did you knock me down?"

Gasping for breath, Skylite anxiously spoke, "I need your help. Sorry I knocked you over. I just could not stop. This new thing I discovered I could fly is so thrilling!"

"Never mind that," Skylite spoke. "Dozzie, so you found me. What do you want?"

Skylite was darting all around. Dozzie said, "I need your help. We need to get back to Timber-Stick Town now. I need every stick to help me!"

"What is going on you frantic little bug?"

"Well, you see, Dozzie, I was flying all over in the field, and I saw this turkey limping, so I flew by him and noticed how hurt he was. We need to help him," spoke Skylite.

"But, Skylite, they eat bugs like us," said Dozzie.

"I know," spoke Skylite, "but he needs our help."

"But how?" asked Dozzie

"Dozzie, can you help me?" asked Skylite. "I have an idea that might work"

As Dozzie and Skylite entered Timber-Stick Town, to their surprise all the sticks were jumping with so much joy and yelling "our hero, skylite!"

Dozzie standing on a limb. "We need to help, Skylite!"

"Help with what?" Skylite asked.

I found a turkey that was hurt, and I want to help him!

"oh no!" gasped the sticks. "Skylite, they eat us! I am not ready to be a meal for him. No one is! And you, Skylite. Turkeys eat you also!"

"please," begged Skylite, "I will protect you I promise!"

The sticks thought about it and then they all agreed to help. After saying goodbye to their families and BeBees splinters they left for their journey.

Skylite flew ahead to find the turkey. As he came upon the turkey, Skylite wanting to help was attacked.

Skylite, "whoa, I came to help you! What is your name?" asked Skylite.

The turkey replied, "Go away, and leave me alone. I am hungry and hurt. Go away or I will eat you!"

Skylite yelled, "no! I came to help you!"

"What?" replied the turkey, "To help me?"

"Yes, my friends are here to help find a safe place before the storm starts. Look! Over there Mr. and Mrs. Barktree are holding my friends, the walking sticks."

"You all came to help me?" the turkey spoke as he sobbed.

"What is your name?" asked Skylite.

"bumpy," spoke the turkey!

"Bumpy. Oh, that is a nice name for a turkey! It is better than tom."

"What happened?"

Bumpy responded with tears in his eyes, "zappo and his zappions. They started to chase me, and I could not fly that well and I tripped and hurt my leg."

Gasping, Skylite said, "oh no, not zappo again!"

"Yes," Bumpy replied while crying.

"Well, don't you worry Bumpy we are here to help you all of us!"

"wow," Bumpy sobbed. "Thank you so much."

"You stay here, Bumpy, until I find a place that is safe for you, and I will bring some food to you," said Skylite.

Bumpy asked, "Skylite? Are you the same Skylite that saved the Princess of Neon?"

"Why, yes," spoke Skylite.

"So, you really are the hero everyone talks about! wow," said Bumpy

Skylite flew over to Dozzie and the walking sticks. Skylite asked Dozzie if they found a spot yet and Dozzie replied, "yes. Oh, Skylite you are going to be so happy."

"well, tell me," said Skylite. "It is a cave and big enough for the turkey? By the way, what is the turkey's name?" asked. Dozzie

"His name is Bumpy!" replied Skylite.

'Hey, Skylite, better than another tom," laughed Dozzie.

"Can Bumpy make it to the cave?" Skylite asked.

"No."

"Great, so how do we get Bumpy to safety?"

Bumpy spoke up and said, "A sling?"

"How?" asked Skylite and Dozzie.

"Let's start by lining up on both sides of me for the length."

Dozzie spoke, "Well, let's go. Bumpy will not eat us. All the walking sticks lined up on either side of Bumpy," and Dozzie spoke up, "I got it. It's so simple. We can hang onto one another from side to side. This will give Bumpy a place to lay down while we move him!"

"yeah!" all the sticks are so happy to be able to help Bumpy.

As Bumpy moved closer to get on the sling, everyone went screaming and running to Mr. and Mrs. Barktree. it was Zappo and his zapping. Skylite flew up immediately and stopped

Zappo.

He yelled at Zappo, "What do you want?"

"Well, Skylite. I feel so bad for what I did, and I would like to help you all."

Skylite said, "hmmmmmm, can we trust you?"

"yes, oh please, give me a chance.

I promise I will be good from now on. I am tired of being a bad bug."

"This is your last chance, Zappo," said Skylite. "Okay, let's start all over again."

"Yes," spoke Zappo. Zappo and his zappions also helped in lining up the sticks for Bumpy.

"Bumpy, can you get on the sling?" asked Dozzie and Skylite.

"I will try," said Bumpy. Bumpy could not move. "oh, no!" cried Bumpy. "What now?"

Zappo spoke up, "I and my zappions can lift you onto the sling."

They went to either side of Bumpy and started to lift him. "wow!" exclaimed Bumpy. "I am on the sling." Skylite and Dozzie went to Bumpy. "Are you ready?

"Why yes," spoke Bumpy.

"Hang on. Here we go."

Moving toward the cave Zappo noticed something. He was flashing, and it was getting darker and windier. He was guiding everyone to the cave. Skylite was so surprised Zappo lit up and was flashing.

"How can I and my zappions flash?" he asked.

"Simple," said Skylite. "Because you are doing good by helping someone in need of help."

Upon entering the cave, the rain started. "Just in time," spoke up Skylite. "Now we need something for Bumpy to sit on."

"I got it, Skylite," said Dozzie. "If we can build a sling, we can build a rocking chair!"

"A rocking chair?"

"Why yes!"

All the walking sticks built a rocking chair for Bumpy. Bumpy was so tearful and grateful that the food he eats saved him from harm. "Wow," said Bumpy. "Thank you, all. I thought I was going to die, but you all saved me!"

Zappo and his Zappions were flashing and flying all around. Zappo spoke to everyone and said, "I promise, Skylite. I will take good care of Bumpy until he is well, and I will take care of all the walking sticks that built the sling and chair."

A Relational Approach to the Empty Chair【電子書籍】[ Peter Philippson ]
|

The ‘empty chair’ experiment has had mixed fortunes in Gestalt Therapy. Once it was a central method, with Fritz Perls naming it as one of his essentials, along with a ‘hot seat’ and tissues. It was so prevalent that it got taken as defining the approach, and taught in that way on counselling courses.

While the technique has remained meaningful for many Gestaltists, it has fallen into disfavour with most of the training schools I have come across. I think this is for two reasons: firstly, that it connects with a certain paradigm of technique-based Gestalt work, often associated with Fritz Perls’ work in California, that many are trying to distance Gestalt Therapy from; secondly, that the paradigm has shifted back from ‘working on the client’ to a more relational style of work, and two-chair work, and indeed any formal experiments, are not seen as part of that but of a kind of intrapsychic tinkering with the client’s mind. Two-chair work is also linked with that simplified version of Gestalt work that was so common in the past. I remember myself being taught to tell clients to put their mothers on a cushion and hit it with a tennis racquet!

In this paper, I want to describe why and how I continue to use the empty chair at times, how I understand it in relational terms, and, more generally, how experiments can be integrated with relational dialogue.

Everything In Moderation: How To Chair, Moderate And Otherwise Lead Events【電子書籍】[ Tony Hallett ]
|

What is the best way to run a panel, orchestrate a debate, chair a conference or introduce a keynote speaker? Tony Hallett, an experienced editor, publisher, trainer and advisor has fronted hundreds of live events. In this practical, often humorous how-to guide he demystifies what it takes to shine on stage ? whether your stage is a broadcast news panel, an industry conference or just the front of a company meeting room.

Throughout the book chapters are illustrated with anecdotes. Hear how he separately coped with mobile interruptus (twice in one panel session), conquered the tweetwall and sucked up to Bill Gates.

Find out why you should never leave panellists to introduce themselves (“Big tip: Avoid this at all costs. Seriously, this is rubbish.”) but why it is a good idea to let them conclude one after another ? as long as they only use a single word.

His book, unlike materials used by expensive corporate trainers, goes into detail around key subjects. These include:
- pre-event preparation
- environment
- introductions, question-asking and flow
- time-keeping
- Q&A
- tools of the trade.

He concludes with a section containing various tips and tricks, with no subject too lofty (eg political even-handedness at a civic meeting) or too low-level (eg don’t let that wacky pair of socks spoil your on-stage image).

Tony has worked with numerous blue-chip companies at all kinds of events ? and distilled everything he learnt into these pages.

Benefit from the kind of insight that didn’t exist when he started out.

The Chieftain and the Chair The Rise of Danish Design in Postwar America【電子書籍】[ Maggie Taft ]
|

A history of how Danish design rose to prominence in the postwar United States, becoming shorthand for stylish modern comfort.

Today, Danish Modern design is synonymous with clean, midcentury cool. During the 1950s and ‘60s, it flourished as the furniture choice for Americans who hoped to signal they were current and chic. But how did this happen? How did Danish Modern become the design movement of the times? In The Chieftain and the Chair, Maggie Taft tells the tale of our love affair with Danish Modern design. Structured as a biography of two iconic chairsーFinn Juhl’s Chieftain Chair and Hans Wegner’s Round Chair, both designed and first fabricated in 1949ーthis book follows the chairs from conception and fabrication through marketing, distribution, and use.

Drawing on research in public and private archives, Taft considers how political, economic, and cultural forces in interwar Denmark laid the foundations for the postwar furniture industry, and she tracks the deliberate maneuvering on the part of Danish creatives and manufacturers to cater to an American market. Taft also reveals how American tastemakers and industrialists were eager to harness Danish design to serve American interests and how furniture manufacturers around the world were quick to capitalize on the fad by flooding the market with copies.

Sleek and minimalist, Danish Modern has experienced a resurgence of popularity in the last few decades and remains a sought-after design. This accessible and engaging history offers a unique look at its enduring rise among tastemakers.

On a Wing and a Chair An Epic Solo Flight Around Australia【電子書籍】[ Dave Jacka ]
|

On 5 June 2013, Dave Jacka became the first person with quadriplegia to fly solo around Australia, covering a distance of almost 18,000 kilometres, the equivalent of flying from Melbourne to London.

On a Wing and a Chair brings the reader into this thrilling adventure. We experience the highs and lows of six years of preparation; then the trials and rewards of an epic 38-day flight in Dave's custom-adapted aircraft.

Turbulent weather, mechanical problems, sickness and fatigue were just some of the obstacles the team faced as they circumnavigated Australia, hugging the country's majestic coastline. At every stop along the way, the team received overwhelming support from local people who were deeply inspired by the flight's mission and Dave's courage.

After a near-death experience of getting caught in terrifying turbulence that tossed his aircraft around like a cork in a churning ocean, Dave had to overcome immense fear and anxiety in order to continue.

With insight and candour, Dave shares his moments of triumph and of self-doubt. No matter the challenge, Dave will find a way; the book exemplifies his guiding philosophy of setting personal goals, navigating obstacles and stretching his capacity. As Dave asks, "Where do my limits lie? Indeed, where do anyone's limits lie?"

On a Wing and a Chair is an inspiring story of tenacity, perseverance and self-belief. Through his remarkable example, Dave shows us what is possible when we dare to push our limits.
