Scale The Universal Laws of Life, Growth, and Death in Organisms, Cities, and Companies【電子書籍】[ Geoffrey West ]

**"This is science writing as wonder and as inspiration." ーThe Wall Street Journal

Wall Street Journal

From one of the most influential scientists of our time, a dazzling exploration of the hidden laws that govern the life cycle of everything from plants and animals to the cities we live in.**

Visionary physicist Geoffrey West is a pioneer in the field of complexity science, the science of emergent systems and networks. The term “complexity” can be misleading, however, because what makes West’s discoveries so beautiful is that he has found an underlying simplicity that unites the seemingly complex and diverse phenomena of living systems, including our bodies, our cities and our businesses.

Fascinated by aging and mortality, West applied the rigor of a physicist to the biological question of why we live as long as we do and no longer. The result was astonishing, and changed science: West found that despite the riotous diversity in mammals, they are all, to a large degree, scaled versions of each other. If you know the size of a mammal, you can use scaling laws to learn everything from how much food it eats per day, what its heart-rate is, how long it will take to mature, its lifespan, and so on. Furthermore, the efficiency of the mammal’s circulatory systems scales up precisely based on weight: if you compare a mouse, a human and an elephant on a logarithmic graph, you find with every doubling of average weight, a species gets 25% more efficientーand lives 25% longer. Fundamentally, he has proven, the issue has to do with the fractal geometry of the networks that supply energy and remove waste from the organism’s body.

West’s work has been game-changing for biologists, but then he made the even bolder move of exploring his work’s applicability. Cities, too, are constellations of networks and laws of scalability relate with eerie precision to them. Recently, West has applied his revolutionary work to the business world. This investigation has led to powerful insights into why some companies thrive while others fail. The implications of these discoveries are far-reaching, and are just beginning to be explored. Scale is a thrilling scientific adventure story about the elemental natural laws that bind us together in simple but profound ways. Through the brilliant mind of Geoffrey West, we can envision how cities, companies and biological life alike are dancing to the same simple, powerful tune.

Transactions on Large-Scale Data- and Knowledge-Centered Systems XLI Special Issue on Data and Security Engineering【

The LNCS journal Transactions on Large-Scale Data- and Knowledge-Centered Systems focuses on data management, knowledge discovery, and knowledge processing, which are core and hot topics in computer science. Since the 1990s, the Internet has become the main driving force behind application development in all domains. An increase in the demand for resource sharing across different sites connected through networks has led to an evolution of data- and knowledge-management systems from centralized systems to decentralized systems enabling large-scale distributed applications providing high scalability. Current decentralized systems still focus on data and knowledge as their main resource. Feasibility of these systems relies basically on P2P (peer-to-peer) techniques and the support of agent systems with scaling and decentralized control. Synergy between grids, P2P systems, and agent technologies is the key to data- and knowledge-centered systems in large-scale environments.

This, the 41st issue of Transactions on Large-Scale Data- and Knowledge-Centered Systems, contains seven revised, extended papers selected from the 4th International Conference on Future Data and Security Engineering, FDSE 2017, which was held in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, in November/December 2017.
The investigation had the following specific objectives to assess production and financial management on SCD at Keren Sub Zone and the record keeping system of the SCD at Keren Sub Zone and to identify areas of economic opportunity on SCD at Keren Sub Zone by comparing herd data to local targets. The stratified random sampling method was adapted to select representative samples. Thus, 30 dairy farms were selected for economic opportunity survey under present investigation including 13, 11, 4 and 2 samples from the dairy farms having herd size 1-5, 6-10, 11-15 and more than 16, respectively, in Anseba Region; Sub Zone Keren. To conduct the survey standardized questionnaires, inventory, interview, on-farm visits and direct observations were utilized. Data collected were entered into four sheets of economic opportunity survey files in Microsoft Office Excel 2007, followed by statistical analysis using standard statistical methods and techniques. Important findings included that the SCD at Keren Sub Zone had the opportunity from lactation length, milk production, health care cost/cows and total economic opportunities, but not from calf mortality, age at first calving, calving interval and a number of dead/total number of born alive or dead. The most of the SCD were having record keeping system at Keren Sub Zone. It is concluded that firstly the ministry of agriculture should have hard working to increase the awareness of the famers on scientific managerial practices of dairy cattle and providing subsidies. Producers should have a continuous assessment of the profitability of their farms. Producers should have their own pasture land because there may be fluctuation in market supply of the green feeds. Producers should identify the area of economic opportunity and rank according to their importance to take the accurate intervention to get the profit. Producers should formulate a ration for each class of animals on the farm according to their requirement to make the profit rather than feeding blindly. Producers should have full records of the farm activity including detailed information on an individual cow in the farm.

Building Mobile Apps at Scale 39 Engineering Challenges【電子書籍】[ Gergely Orosz ]

While there is a lot of appreciation for backend and distributed systems challenges, there tends to be less empathy for why mobile development is hard when done at scale.

This book collects challenges engineers face when building iOS and Android apps at scale, and common ways to tackle these. By scale, we mean having numbers of users in the millions and being built by large engineering teams.

For mobile engineers, this book is a blueprint for modern app engineering approaches. For non-mobile engineers and managers, it is a resource with which to build empathy and appreciation for the complexity of world-class mobile engineering.

The book covers iOS and Android mobile app challenges on these dimensions:

Challenges due to the unique nature of mobile applications compared to the web, and to the backend.

App complexity challenges. How do you deal with increasingly complicated navigation patterns? What about non-deterministic event combinations? The Paradox of Scale How?NGOs Build, Maintain, and Lose Authority?in Environmental Governance【電子書籍】[ Cristina M. Balboa ]

An examination of why NGOs often experience difficulty creating lasting change, with case studies of transnational conservation organizations in Southeast Asia and the Pacific.

Why do nongovernmental organizations face difficulty creating lasting change? How can they be more effective? In this book, Cristina Balboa examines NGO authority, capacity, and accountability to propose that a “paradox of scale” is a primary barrier to NGO effectiveness. This paradoxーwhen what gives an NGO authority on one scale also weakens its authority on another scaleーhelps explain how NGOs can be seen as an authority on particular causes on a global scale, but then fail to effect change at the local level. Drawing on case studies of transnational conservation organizations in Southeast Asia and the Pacific*, The Paradox of Scale* explores how NGOs build, maintain, and lose authority over time.

Balboa sets a new research agenda for the study of governance, offering practical concepts and analysis to help NGO practitioners. She introduces the concept of authority as a form of legitimated power, explaining why it is necessary for NGOs to build authority at multiple scales when they create, implement, or enforce rules. Examining the experiences of Conservation International in Papua New Guinea, International Marinelife Alliance in the Philippines, and the Community Conservation Network in Palau, Balboa explains how a paradox of scale can develop even for those NGOs that seem powerful and effective. Interdisciplinary in its approach, The Paradox of Scale offers guidance for interpreting the actions and pressures accompanying work with NGOs, showing why even the most authoritative NGOs often struggle to make a lasting impact.

In "An Account of the Insects Noxious to Agriculture and Plants in New Zealand," William Miles Maskell provides a meticulous and authoritative examination of the various insect species that threaten the agricultural landscape of New Zealand. Through a blend of detailed field observations and rigorous taxonomy, Maskell's literary style combines scientific precision with vivid descriptions, allowing readers to engage deeply with the ecological concerns of the period. Set within the late 19th century, a time when colonial agriculture was expanding rapidly, the book reflects critical themes related to environmental conservation and the challenges posed by invasive species. William Miles Maskell, an entomologist and a prominent figure in the study of New Zealand's fauna, draws upon his rich background in natural history and science to inform his writings. Having worked extensively in the field, Maskell's insights into agricultural practices and the impact of pests stem from both personal experience and a burgeoning scientific curiosity unique to his time. His contributions to entomology not only enhance our understanding of insect life but also advocate for better agricultural practices in a rapidly transforming environment. This book is essential for scholars, ecologists, and agriculturalists interested in the dynamics of pest management and conservation in New Zealand. Maskell's compelling narrative serves as a crucial resource for understanding the delicate balance between agriculture and ecological health, making it a valuable addition to the libraries of those invested in environmental studies and pest control strategies.
