Metallocofactors that Activate Small Molecules With Focus on Bioinorganic Chemistry【

This volume highlights recent progress on the fundamental chemistry and mechanistic understanding of metallocofactors, with an emphasis on the major development in these areas from the perspective of bioinorganic chemistry.

Metallocofactors are essential for all forms of life and include a variety of metals, such as iron, molybdenum, vanadium, and nickel. Structurally fascinating metallocofactors featuring these metals are present in many bacteria and mediate remarkable metabolic redox chemistry with small molecule substrates, including N2, CO, H2, and CO2. Current interest in understanding how these metallocofactors function at the atomic level is enormous, especially in the context of sustainably feeding and fueling our planet; if we can understand how these cofactors work, then there is the possibility to design synthetic catalysts that function similarly.

The Bioinorganic Chemistry of Chromium【電子書籍】[ John B. Vincent ]

Chromium exists in nature as complexes of two stable oxidation states ? trivalent chromium(III) and hexavalent chromium(VI). Although trivalent chromium is required in trace amounts for sugar and lipid metabolism in humans and its deficiency may cause a disease called chromium deficiency; hexavalent chromium is toxic and carcinogenic. As chromium compounds were used in dyes and paints and the tanning of leather, these compounds are often found in soil and groundwater at abandoned industrial sites, now needing environmental cleanup and remediation.

The Bioinorganic Chemistry of Chromium: From Biochemistry to Environmental Toxicology takes a critical look at what the biochemical data indicate about chromium's role in the body and the biological mechanisms of its toxicology. Topics covered include:

What do we know about the biochemical roles and mechanisms of chromium?

Is chromium an essential element in the mammalian diet?

Is chromium(III) effective as a nutraceutical, a therapeutic agent, and as a supplement in animal feed?

What is the biochemistry behind the toxicology of chromium(III) and chromium(VI):the mechanisms of metabolism, genetic and epigenetic effects, and disruption of cell signalling?

What are the current chromium(VI) policies and positions from regulatory agencies?

The Bioinorganic Chemistry of Chromium: From Biochemistry to Environmental Toxicology is an important contribution to the bioinorganic and trace element biochemical fields which will find a place on the bookshelves of bioinorganic chemists, biochemists, inorganic chemists, toxicologists, nutritionists and regulatory affairs professionals.

Applications of Density Functional Theory to Biological and Bioinorganic Chemistry【

The series Structure and Bonding publishes critical reviews on topics of research concerned with chemical structure and bonding. The scope of the series spans the entire Periodic Table and addresses structure and bonding issues associated with all of the elements. It also focuses attention on new and developing areas of modern structural and theoretical chemistry such as nanostructures, molecular electronics, designed molecular solids, surfaces, metal clusters and supramolecular structures. Physical and spectroscopic techniques used to determine, examine and model structures fall within the purview of Structure and Bonding to the extent that the focus is on the scientific results obtained and not on specialist information concerning the techniques themselves. Issues associated with the development of bonding models and generalizations that illuminate the reactivity pathways and rates of chemical processes are also relevant.
The individual volumes in the series are thematic. The goal of each volume is to give the reader, whether at a university or in industry, a comprehensive overview of an area where new insights are emerging that are of interest to a larger scientific audience. Thus each review within the volume critically surveys one aspect of that topic and places it within the context of the volume as a whole. The most significant developments of the last 5 to 10 years should be presented using selected examples to illustrate the principles discussed. A description of the physical basis of the experimental techniques that have been used to provide the primary data may also be appropriate, if it has not been covered in detail elsewhere. The coverage need not be exhaustive in data, but should rather be conceptual, concentrating on the new principles being developed that will allow the reader, who is not a specialist in the area covered, to understand the data presented. Discussion of possible future research directions in the area is welcomed. Review articles for the individual volumes are invited by the volume editors.
Readership: research scientists at universities or in industry, graduate students
Special offer
For all customers who have a standing order to the print version of Structure and Bonding, we offer free access to the electronic volumes of the Series published in the current year via SpringerLink.

Bioinorganic chemistry is an interdisciplinary research field which centers on metals in biology. Over the past few decades, advances in chemistry, biology as well as in spectroscopic methods have shed light on the role of copper in human pathologies and allowed the growing discovery of copper-containing biological systems. Following this trend, much effort is being constantly chanelled towards understanding these fundamental biological processes or enzymes. In addition, chemists are developing molecules to target copper or copper enzymes as therapeutic tools. On the other hand, inspired by the function of biological systems, small molecular weight complexes inspired by the active site of copper enzymes are being prepared and studied. These bioinspired complexes can function both as mechanistic tools and as functional catalysts for oxidative transformations.

The seven chapters in this book, contributed by internationally recognized authors cover recent developments on these aspects illustrated by interdisciplinary fields from biology, chemistry, spectroscopy to bioinspired catalysis. It contains aspects ranging from human health issues (copper homeostasis in bacteria and the development of molecules as anticancer or antibacterial agents) to bioinspired catalysis.

Contents:

Ligands as a Tool to Tune the Toxicity of Cu on Bacteria: From Boosting to Silencing (Lisa Zuily, Nora Lahrach, Enrico Falcone, Merwan Bouraguba, Vincent Lebrun, Elisabeth Lojou, Marie-Th?r?se Giudici-Orticoni, Peter Faller, and Marianne Ilbert)

Transition State Analogue Molecules as Mechanistic Tools and Inhibitors for Tyrosinase (Clarisse Faure, Amaury du Moulinet d'Hardemare, H?l?ne Jamet, Catherine Belle, Elisabetta Bergantino, Luigi Bubacco, Maurizio Benfatto, A Jalila Simaan, and Marius R?glier)

Modeling Tyrosinase Activity Using m-Xylyl-Based Ligands: Ring Hydroxylation, Reactivity, and Theoretical Investigation (Puneet Gupta and Rabindranath Mukherjee)

Monooxygenation of Phenols by Small-molecule Models of Tyrosinase: Correlations Between Structure and Catalytic Activity (Alexander Koch, Tobias A Engesser, Ramona Jurgeleit, and Felix Tuczek)

Electrochemistry and Spectroelectrochemistry of Copper-Oxygen-Relevant Species (Nicolas Le Poul)

Inorganic Models of Lytic Polysaccharide Monooxygenases (Ivan Castillo)

Structure and Function of Cu-Peptoid Complexes (Anastasia E Behar, Pritam Ghosh, and Galia Maayan)

Readership: Masters students, graduate students and researchers in copper bioinorganic chemistry and biological chemistry.
Key Features:

The last book about copper bioinorganic chemistry was published in 1993

Copper bioinorganic chemistry is gaining recent attention since the discovery of its implication in human pathologies and of new copper-containing systems

This book was decided after the international conference on copper bioinorganic chemistry that was held in Marseille in 2018 (CuBICS) and that gathered the main contributors in the field

It contains aspects ranging from human health issues (copper homeostasis in bacteria and the development of molecules as anticancer or antibacterial agents) to bioinspired catalysis

Jamaluddin ]

All substances in the universe are made of elements. According to the current generally accepted theory, hydrogen and helium were generated first immediately after the Big Bang, some 15 billion years ago. Subsequently, after the elements below iron (Z= 26) were formed by nuclear fusion in the incipient stars, heavier elements were produced by the complicated nuclear reactions that accompanied stellar generation and decay. More than ten million organic compounds are known at present and infinite numbers of inorganic compounds are likely to be synthesized by the combination of all the elements. Recently, really epoch making compounds such as complex copper oxides with high-temperature superconductivity and a new carbon allotrope C60 have been discovered and it is widely recognized that very active research efforts are being devoted to the study of these compounds. By the discoveries of new compounds, new empirical laws are proposed and new theories are established to explain the bondings, structures, reactions, and physical properties. However, classical chemical knowledge is essential before studying new chemistry. Learning synthetic methods, structures, bondings, and main reactions of basic compounds is a process requisite to students. This book is suitable for graduate students preparing for chemistry examinations. The book covers essential topics relevant to Indian universities chemistry syllabus.

Concepts In Bioinorganic Chemistry【電子書籍】[ Udai Arvind ]

The inorganic elements, other than carbon, especially the metals are also vital to the functioning of biological systems. The bioinorganic chemistry mostly deals with the role of metals and non metals in these systems. Many biological processes such as photosynthesis, respiration, metal ion transport, enzymatic actions etc., fall into the realm of bioinorganic chemistry. It is highly advanced interdisciplinary science. The organisms uptake elements in different forms from the earth crust and the surrounding atmosphere. However, it is evident from the following table that there is rather a weak correlation between the distribution of various elements in the earth crust to that in the biological systems. The present book has been planned in such a way to given an overall view of this subject. Contents: ? Introduction ? Biomolecules ? Protein Interactions ? Biomaterials ? Polyhedral ? Matrix Characterization ? Cytochromes ? Atom and Group Transfer Chemistry ? Enzyme Systems

Computational Inorganic and Bioinorganic Chemistry【

Over the past several decades there have been major advances in our ability to computationally evaluate the electronic structure of inorganic molecules, particularly transition metal systems. This advancement is due to the Moore’s Law increase in computing power as well as the impact of density functional theory (DFT) and its implementation in commercial and freeware programs for quantum chemical calculations. Improved pure and hybrid density functionals are allowing DFT calculations with accuracy comparable to high-level Hartree-Fock treatments, and the results of these calculations can now be evaluated by experiment.

When calculations are correlated to, and supported by, experimental data they can provide fundamental insight into electronic structure and its contributions to physical properties and chemical reactivity. This interplay continues to expand and contributes to both improved value of experimental results and improved accuracy of computational predictions.

The purpose of this EIC Book is to provide state-of-the-art presentations of quantum mechanical and related methods and their applications, written by many of the leaders in the field. Part 1 of this volume focuses on methods, their background and implementation, and their use in describing bonding properties, energies, transition states and spectroscopic features. Part 2 focuses on applications in bioinorganic chemistry and Part 3 discusses inorganic chemistry, where electronic structure calculations have already had a major impact. This addition to the EIC Book series is of significant value to both experimentalists and theoreticians, and we anticipate that it will stimulate both further development of the methodology and its applications in the many interdisciplinary fields that comprise modern inorganic and bioinorganic chemistry.

This volume is also available as part of Encyclopedia of Inorganic Chemistry, 5 Volume Set.

This set combines all volumes published as EIC Books from 2007 to 2010, representing areas of key developments in the field of inorganic chemistry published in the Encyclopedia of Inorganic Chemistry. Find out more.
