Matthew Desmond’s EVICTED: Poverty and Profit in the American City | Summary【電子書籍】[ Ant Hive Media ]

楽天Kobo電子書籍ストア

This is a Summary of Matthew Desmond’s New York Times Bestseller: EVICTED Poverty and Profit in the American City

From Harvard sociologist and MacArthur "Genius" Matthew Desmond, a landmark work of scholarship and reportage that will forever change the way we look at poverty in America
In this brilliant, heartbreaking book, Matthew Desmond takes us into the poorest neighborhoods of Milwaukee to tell the story of eight families on the edge. Arleen is a single mother trying to raise her two sons on the $20 a month she has left after paying for their rundown apartment. Scott is a gentle nurse consumed by a heroin addiction. Lamar, a man with no legs and a neighborhood full of boys to look after, tries to work his way out of debt. Vanetta participates in a botched stickup after her hours are cut. All are spending almost everything they have on rent, and all have fallen behind.

The fates of these families are in the hands of two landlords: Sherrena Tarver, a former schoolteacher turned inner-city entrepreneur, and Tobin Charney, who runs one of the worst trailer parks in Milwaukee. They loathe some of their tenants and are fond of others, but as Sherrena puts it, “Love don’t pay the bills.” She moves to evict Arleen and her boys a few days before Christmas.

Even in the most desolate areas of American cities, evictions used to be rare. But today, most poor renting families are spending more than half of their income on housing, and eviction has become ordinary, especially for single mothers. In vivid, intimate prose, Desmond provides a ground-level view of one of the most urgent issues facing America today. As we see families forced into shelters, squalid apartments, or more dangerous neighborhoods, we bear witness to the human cost of America’s vast inequalityーand to people’s determination and intelligence in the face of hardship.

Based on years of embedded fieldwork and painstakingly gathered data, this masterful book transforms our understanding of extreme poverty and economic exploitation while providing fresh ideas for solving a devastating, uniquely American problem. Its unforgettable scenes of hope and loss remind us of the centrality of home, without which nothing else is possible.

Available in a variety of formats, this summary is aimed for those who want to capture the gist of the book but don't have the current time to devour all 432 pages. You get the main summary along with all of the benefits and lessons the actual book has to offer. This summary is not intended to be used without reference to the original book.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。 509円

Summary of Evicted - Poverty and Profit in the American City - A Comprehensive Summary

PART 1: THERE ARE MORE EVICTIONS NOW THAN EVER BEFORE
The author opens the book by describing and comparing the situations regarding evictions during the time of the Depression and now. He states that during the Depression, evictions would bring masses of people who would form an organized resistance, but today is a lot different. Back then, many neighbors would prevent marshals from forcing families from their homes and taking their belongings, and law enforcement officers did not want to throw people out of their homes.
But now, in modern times, the situation has changed drastically. Evictions are something that happens almost every day. According to the author’s calculations and research, in the late 2000s in Milwaukee there were approximately sixteen families evicted on a daily basis. In Georgia, 200,000 evictions were filed in 2013 alone, and in San Francisco, evictions increased by 38 percent between 2010 and 2013.
After this, the author writes about the personal consequences of eviction. Some of these are loss of possessions and loss of financial income. Children of evicted parents will either have to move to a different school or they miss school altogether. Many times when a person loses their home, they also lose their job. Eventually evictions may lead to depression, anxiety...

To be continued...

Here is a Preview of What You Will Get:

? A Full Book Summary

?
