【輸入盤CD】Momus / Smudger【K2022/3/18発売】

あめりかん・ぱい
発売日: 2022/4/29輸入盤USレーベル: American Patchwork収録曲:コメント:Smudger, the 2022 album from Momus, has several quite distinct strands of influence: from Lieder to Bowie's Lodger, from Benjamin Britten to British Music Hall comedy. Lieder reached it's zenith with Schubert's song cycle Die Winterreise; Momus "smudges" this Romantic tradition by opening with a melancholy electronic pop take on Schubert's setting of the poem Gute Nacht, with lyrics newly and freely translated: "The stranger is arriving, a stranger I will leave..." There's another German journey in Bergreise, a song based on the evocative names of German synthesisers. And the album ends with Hanns Eisler's setting of a Brecht poem, On the Friendliness of the World. Before that, though, there are songs which sound like Joni Mitchell, or revive Herman Melville characters, or sound like Rex Harrison musicals scripted by Marty Feldman. There are constant references to Lodger, David Bowie's most eclectic and eccentric album - Influencer Village, for instance, updates Bowie's DJ to the age of eyeball-hungry social media. As for 19th century British burlesque, there are songs which draw on the music hall routines of comics like Harry Champion and Albert Chevalier, songs which introduce character "turns" like The Coffee Professor. The Benjamin Britten influence can be heard in Peter Grimes, a murky retelling of the opera of the same name. And there's a Bond theme pastiche in Supervillain. In the end, though, this is a classic Momus album, full of songs that remind us of his many "adventures in culture" across four decades: Stop the Body is a post-Covid take on his laidback 1987 epic Closer to You, and Totentanz recalls his "folktronic" period. Pesky Blighters even revisits the minimalist systems music of Vivid (2020). What exactly is Smudger smudging, then? With a joyful, playful smear the album blurs past and present, self and other, tradition and innovation, mockery and respect. On the smudging finger, though, always the distinctive Momus print.Smudger, the 2022 album from Momus, has several quite distinct strands of influence: from Lieder to Bowie's Lodger, from Benjamin Britten to British Music Hall comedy. Pelikan 1.12 12. Cosmos 1.13 13. DunderheadsReturning to Europe after several months in Asia, Momus begins recording Krambambuli with a yen for melodrama. Assuming the persona of an obscure Japanese synth-chanson singer called Megumi Satsu, he records 1980s-style songs about murder, ageing and war using a new vocal technique halfway between Satsu's rambling, guttural cries and the Sprechgesang (speaking-singing) style pioneered a century ago by Arnold Schoenberg. As the lights dim, we find ourselves in - as one song puts it - the theatre of the self. The chord sequences this time are baroque-inspired and the textures synthetic, so artists like Klaus Nomi swim into view, bringing distant echoes of Handel and Purcell. A more poppy tone emerges in songs like Captivate and Hotdesking, influenced - oddly enough - by South Korean pop-dance sensation New Jeans. Lyrically, these songs make bridges between political themes of military invasion - with the ongoing Ukraine war as a constant backdrop - and the idea of personal charm as a guilty and ambivalent power strategy. A 1980 duet between Kermit the Frog and Debbie Harry inspires Men Are The Problem, a sigh of exasperation about the foolish machismo still rampant in geopolitics. Humour returns in the form of a song recounting the plot of Walerian Borowczyk's 1975 erotic horror film The Beast, and towards the end of the record British comedian Tony Hancock pops up to parody beatnik poetry. Chugging, surreal chords and nonsense lyrics finally tug the record towards the psychedelic soundscapes of Wire's 1979 album 154. And it goes without saying - this being Momus at his most theatrical - that David Bowie's influence is here too, as strong as ever. 3,705円

Back in 1987 Momus was in a London studio finishing The Poison Boyfriend, his debut album for Creation Records. Band of Holy Joy had a session the next day, so the 27 year-old Scot left a note wishing his friends well and adding: "You've got real accordions - I just use the horrible pre-programmed one in the DX7!" Thirty-two years later, now living in Berlin after a long spell in Japan, Momus finally purchased a real accordion from a junk shop on a street once split by the wall. Momus quickly discovered it's wide dynamic range, it's ability to stab, sob and wheeze and the ease with which chords could be pumped out using the buttons ranged down the lefthand side. Songs played on the new instrument (mixed in with sounds from the latest iPad apps) had a pleasing tendency to sound like Eisler's collaborations with Brecht during the late Weimar Republic years. Momus decided to make an album called Akkordion (the title mixes the German and English spellings) and drummed up sixteen new songs during the spookily hot summer. Many of them sound like garish clown music, political cabaret, surreal satire or radical vaudeville, with echoes of the accordion artists Momus knew in the neo-cabaret scene of 1980s London: The Pogues, Les Negresses Vertes, The Tiger Lillies, even solo Marc Almond and Nick Cave. What defines Akkordion is this tension between the light and dark: the bittersweet contrast between personal fulfilment and a political world dominated by division, toxicity and - let's face it - actual fascism. Like little Oskar Matzerath in The Tin Drum this accordion sends a scream through a world marred by disaccord.2019 release. Doubting the Divine in Early Modern Europe The Revival of Momus, the Agnostic God【電子書籍】[ George McClure ]

楽天Kobo電子書籍ストア
<p>In this book, George McClure examines the intellectual tradition of challenges to religious and literary authority in the early modern era. He explores the hidden history of unbelief through the lens of Momus, the Greek god of criticism and mockery. Surveying his revival in Italy, France, Spain, Germany, the Netherlands, and England, McClure shows how Momus became a code for religious doubt in an age when such writings remained dangerous for authors. Momus ('Blame') emerged as a persistent and subversive critic of divine governance and, at times, divinity itself. As an emblem or as an epithet for agnosticism or atheism, he was invoked by writers such as Leon Battista Alberti, Anton Francesco Doni, Giordano Bruno, Luther, and possibly, in veiled form, by Milton in his depiction of Lucifer. The critic of gods also acted, in sometimes related fashion, as a critic of texts, leading the army of Moderns in Swift's Battle of the Books, and offering a heretical archetype for the literary critic.</p>画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。 11,537円

Momus has been slyly combining folk, fable and electronics on his witty and highly playable LPs since the mid-1980s. On Glyptothek, recorded in his adopted city of Osaka during the rainy season, he's ransacked his colorful pile of Japanese folk 45s for samples and wrapped a series of cautionary tales for the internet age around the thunder of Shinto festival drums, the keening wail of rural flutes, the tinny riffing of massed shamisens, the clacking of summery claves, and the wild backing vocals of kimono-clad village maidens. The results sound like a UNESCO World Heritage site incongruously taken over by the ghosts of Hilaire Belloc, Cocteau, Kafka, Jarry, Kantor, Petronius, DH Lawrence, Bolan and Bowie. Or an ethnomusicology department overrun by iPhone-wielding Etruscans. Or the muscular Greek statues at the Munich Glyptothek come back to life, snapping righteous nude selfies. It's fair to say you've never heard anything quite like this, and will probably come to love it.2015 from the Scottish-born indie eccentric. It's fair to say you've never heard anything quite like this, and will probably come to love it. 3,390円

Including the biting Coming in a Girl's Mouth, How to Spot An Invert, Everyone I've Ever Slept With, and the rap monolith: MC Escher. Originally released 10/14/98. 2,609円

Issyvooコメント:Many years ago, Momus wrote a song called The Homosexual about a man who isn't actually gay but delights in - and profits from - the fact that people think he is. Themes of sexual orientation and gender identity thrust and cluster through this, his 2022 album, recorded in Berlin and named after the writer Christopher Isherwood... or, rather, the way Isherwood's Berlin landlady mispronounced his name when, with the poet Auden and other sexual exiles, he lived amongst queers and cabaret singers during the dying days of the Weimar Republic, teetering at the eerie brink of Nazism. It would be nice to think that, a century later, we'd moved on. Fascism, alas, still menaces us just as it menaced Mr Issyvoo, limiting our personal choices with nannying safetyism or outright dictatorship. Other themes churn through this playful yet serious record: guilt in the art world, the primitivist fantasies of expressionist painters, Britain's semi-feudal monarchy, the laughter of lawyers, the lonely battles of social media, the prettiness of monkeys and the splishy-splashiness of joy. The music this time is hooky and poppy. If we really are sauntering into a "pocket apocalypse" here's a wonderful way to whistle some of it's big issues. Many years ago, Momus wrote a song called The Homosexual about a man who isn't actually gay but delights in - and profits from - the fact that people think he is. Momus - indie veteran, Japan-dwelling Scot, David Bowie impersonator, unreliable tour guide, novelist - makes a record every year. Each release becomes a sort of barometer of the cultural and emotional weather around him, filtered through his own preoccupations. 2017's release is called Pillycock and features a strong influence from Pasolini's Trilogy of Life films (the Arabian Nights, the Decameron, the Canterbury Tales), from the rich Elizabethan language of pamphleteer Thomas Nashe, from Jacobean revenge tragedy, from Fellini, psychedelia, snippets of guerilla music foregrounded by artists like Wael Shawky and Kader Attia, early hip-hop, and the skirl and thump of Japan's exuberant summer festivals. What on earth could these brightly-colored strands have in common, and what's Momus up to when he weaves them together - with deliberate inauthenticity and anachronism - over modal electronic folk music using an Arabic scale called Bayati? Perhaps it's their common distance from milquetoast modern Western culture which makes these themes so oddly appealing; invoking the power of imagination and our constant desire for the new, the dark and the strange, this "art of distances" helps us transform and refresh a world which, up close, gets sick, sweet, repetitious or rotten.2017 release from the eccentric Scottish singer/songwriter. One reason Momus has been able to rack up 30 albums in as many years is that he is the quintessential "artist without a style". Lacking any interest in authenticity and equipped with a master-forger's ear for pastiche, Nick Currie has shown himself willing to try everything from cabaret to electronic folk. But following his 2012 collaborations with Joe Howe and David McClymont, Momus remembered that he did have a unique style after all lurking in the murky music of his teenage cassette recordings. Soft yet scratchy, gentle yet urgent, these early compositions used the distinctive sound of a microphone wedged under loose guitar strings, biro-and-anglepoise percussion, and John Cage-style prepared piano. Revived in the 21st century, this post-punk avant-sound gives Bambi a soft charm which at times becomes gently jagged, even primal.2013 album from the veteran Scottish musical chameleon.
